The Calder Valley is a beautiful and interesting part of West Yorkshire. I am a Mancunian but I came to live here 43 years ago with my late civil partner. It is the most intriguing and interesting area and I urge you to visit. There are superb restaurants and pubs dating back to the fourteenth century, you will not be disapointed.

I Certainly approve of the Prince of Wales Regeneration Programme in Regards to Burleigh Pottery as that Programme is not just keeping jobs in the area it's also Recreating new Jobs by blending in the old with the new and we need a lot more jobs bought back to this Country that can Produce Quality Goods at Sensible Prices instead of the Rubbish that has been flooded into this Country

Hi Jemma, Your profile is so similar to my Grandfathers, Arthur Baskeyfield from Burslem. He was born 28 July 1896 at Tunstall and died 1 May 1983 at Almondbury, Yorkshire. In 1901 he lived at 73, Scotia Road, Burslem and in 1911 his occupation was pottery packing. Hope this is of interest to you!

I think Charles is a visionary....a long time ago he recognized the social and economic benefit of preserving organic methods of farming and cultural heritage. Many scoffed at him.

Also Emma Green on Portland Works in Sheffield. How solid community support has helped with the funding of a heritage regeneration project. Local people - democracy has been a key factor in success. Again, inspirational. Needed to raise money to buy the site. Funding target of £200,000 set. Took a year. A rush at the start from already signed up supporters. Then an extension to meet target. Useful to get a personality - John Craven - to support and raise the profile of the project. Negotiations dragged on. Finally, agreed to raise £50,000 more in a month. Went out to existing shareholders - explained in detail and we raised the money at the 11th hour. Sheffield very democratic. People liked being involved as an owner. People also give us volunteer time and pro bono works on all sorts of ways. Really good advocates of the project. We are focusing on hand craft work studios - we have a long list of people who want places in the building. Volunteers cleaning out. Getting lots of buddleia out of the walls. We are very, very focused on making sure rents cover the basic costs of the building. Shows how culture/heritage, business and education/training is meeting the budget. 500 shareholders - expect to pay 3 per cent but not for the first three years. A bridging loan. Extra cash - we offer between 0 per cent and 5 per cent over five years - they tick the box they want. It averages 3 per cent. Regular open days and lot of projects going on. It's all about strong bonds with the community - people of Sheffield really care about their heritage. We have really focused on the income stream.

Hugh Rolo - expert on community sharing as a way of funding regeneration projects. Here he puts forward a strong case for seeking this type of investment from the local community. Hugh says community sharing not just giving - it's about investment. But investors understand won't be a return in first two or three years. There is community enterprise tax relief - can be claimed not just by high tax earners. 35% of people using enterprise investment tax allowance under £50k are in social community sharing projects. It's attracting a market. For example, Unity Hall in Wakefield. Many buildings like this were built by subscription! Current community share - target £200k, have 300 investors on board. Have reached £150k. Share capital gives re-assurance to other investors. Looking for grant funding - and social enterprises looking for grants to do the heavy lifting - what better way to demonstrate local support than local people voting with their wallets in share capital.

Great job from Vicky. Can't see the images from her presentation. A fantastic effort - fighting against all the odds to achieve a regeneration success. Half for, half against. MP and ABP calling for redevelopment. Local volunteers, the vision for a heritage and arts centre. Prince's Regeneration Trust got on board. And the council came around. Community planning day. More attention from outside Grimsby - the more the owners and local authority started to shift. Council desperate to get rid of the biggest eyesore of all - the Ice Factory. Issued an ultimatum. Progress by end of year... but they could not demolish the building. Supported by PRT, professional and market researchers - came up with outline of proposals for the building. Had to constitute as a charitable organisation so as to raise funding. Complex development - lots of heritage, culture - art gallery, leisure - small cinema, commercial elements. Diff to diff elements to satisfy different funders. All needs to add up to £12m to £15m. Team working on funding - applications over two years to most funders. For example, £2m from local growth fund. Professional support important in negotiations with owners. Vicky says: "4 years to get where we are - but we are not a business. Have to jump through all those hoops. To move forward we have to be reliant on the relationships we have formed."

It's nice to know that the English pottery business is still so important. With so much outsourcing, and production taking place elsewhere, this project is very encouraging, and I hope it brings about a resurgence of the English china business -- at home.
