Hans van Heusden, with cichlids in the wild.
Netherlands
Приєднався 12 сер 2020
My name is Hans, and I am in the hobby with cichlids for more than 40 years. But I have expanded my hobby to film cichlids in their natural habitat. And that's why I created this Channel, to show you how your beloved cichlid lives in his natural habitat. So you can learn more about his habitat and imitate this in your aquarium to give your cichlids an optimum living environment. I have traveled throughout Africa and as well Central America where I have filmed many Cichlids in their natural habitat, how I wil show you the coming time.
Diving at Kipili Archipelago. Mvuna Island part 1 The outer Rocky Habitat
I start this video with an overview of the Kipili Archipelago and some footage of the Lake Shore Lodge to thank the owners and staff who made this possible for me. The subsequent videos in this series we dive directly underwater. This first episode concerns the outer reef of Mvuna Island where we dive to about ten meters deep. The species richness of the Kipili Archipelago is great. So in this series you will probably also see your favorite species and with which cichlid it occurs in beautiful habitats. For people who have already divided here, these images will bring back wonderful memories.
Enjoy.
Enjoy.

Cribroheros bussingi a challenge for our aquarium.
Переглядів 1,2 тис.14 днів тому
A cichlid that poses quite a challenge to the Central American Cichlid enthusiast is Cribroheros bussingi, which in its natural habitat coexists with Amatitlania kanna, Amatitlania myrnae and Nanolutea to name just a few beautiful cichlids. Why a challenge? Relatively little is known about the lifestyle of this cichlid. In which habitats does it occur, what is its breeding behavior and with whi...

Or maybe it's fun to identify your cichlids yourself that you might have ...

Over the years I have made several trips to Africa, including Ghana and Cameroon. I have been able to undertake some of these journeys with my friend Michel Keijman. Ghana and Cameroon are two beautiful countries for us hobbyists with a large cichlid diversity and have therefore traveled to these countries several times. Species of the genus Rubricatochromis, Pelvicachromis, Benitochromis, Hemi...
Natural habitat of Tropheus duboisi

There were some issues with the music in this video that I uploaded earlier, so I made some corrections. In this video I would like to show you the habitat of Tropheus duboisi, probably one of the most popular cichlids among Lake Tanganyika cichlid enthusiasts. See how this cichlid lives in its intermediate habitat and how the juveniles in particular forage among the upper washed rocky habitat....
Habitat of Cyathopharynx.
Переглядів 5 тис.2 місяці тому
The two species out of the genus Cyathopharinx have undergone a rather complicated description. As a result, there are still discussions about the identification of this cichlid when photos appear in the media. I have therefore been somewhat cautious with the identification of this cichlid and prefer to leave this to the Lake Tanganyika specialists. Or where in my opinion some extensive researc...
The convict a cichlid with many names.Amatitlania nigrofasciata Amatitlania siquia Amatitlania kanna
Переглядів 6 тис.8 місяців тому
The Convict is a popular cichlid, and has been swimming around in many of our aquariums. This temperamental cichlid was known to us as Cryptoheros nigrofasciatus. In 2007, Schmitter-Soto revised this species into three different species and even classified it into a new genus. This has caused quite a bit of confusion among many aquarists. I have tried in this video to make it a little clearer, ...
Lake Tanganyika habitat off Aulonocranus dewindti & Callochromis macrops

Aulonocranus dewindti & Callochromis macrops occur in intermediate habitats of Lake Tanganyika. I filmed these species in the south of the Lake in the vicinity of the village Kasanga. This film gives you an impression of how these species live in their natural habitat. Who the fellow-inhabitants are in their natural habitat. And even a glimpse into their nighttime lives, surrounded by predators...

Beautiful Habitats of Zambia (episode 2)

Zambia has many beautiful habitats, possibly because several major rivers such as the River Congo and the Zambesi have some of their origins in this beautiful country. Not only rivers but also beautiful lakes such as Lake Tanganyika where I filmed Tropheus moorii (Mpulungu) in its natural habitat. Enjoy

When I first visited Zambia in 2011, I immediately fell in love with the country. whereupon I visited Zambia again for the following three years. During those trips to Zambia I brought several cichlids into the picture that had not yet been described. Cichlids that have now been described and will pass by in these episodes. With thanks to the well-known ichthyologist John Friel from which I fou...

Thank you! Looking forward to the next ones.
Anton zegt dat de Ankasa absoluut geen guttatus is en zelfs een eigen naam krijgt Hans!
Really enjoyed your video. The beauty of that location both above and below are stunning!
Thanks stay tuned much more to come.
Hemichromis fasciatus is indeed a beautiful fish. It’s also among the most aggressive cichlids in the world, so be careful which species you keep them with. They’re often kept in a species tank, as single specimens, or as a breeding pair.
Thank you Hans, super footage and info as allways.
You mentioned having to be careful not to disturb the parents, so they’d behave normally. I wonder: could you lower a GoPro into the water while you’re on land, to be less conspicuous?
This video is really top notch. Some of the best fish documentary footage I’ve seen … thank you!!
Thanks PlainPup fine you liked the video.
This is really such an excellent Central American fish documentary, thank you so much! I will say this: the convict cichlid is probably just one of those animals that simply has a wide range, so some variation is to be expected. These different types probably should not have been elevated to the species level. They’re just regional variants, and should at most be considered subspecies, eg - A. nigrofasciata nigrofasciata, A. nigrofasciata kanna, A. nigrofasciata siquia, etc. I think this taxonomic inflation is just out of control.
It does look like an eloti and robertsoni and burtoni if you mixed those 3
Wow! What a great Video! Thank you!
As usual, great work. Thank you.
Thank you for a fantastic video.
Amazing video 👍
Very nice 👍. Beautiful.
Super
Merci pour cette vidéo j'ai jamais eu cette espèce en cichlasoma en maintenance donc jamais reproduit.
Fantastic. I hope to many more videos of this calibre from you in the future Hans. Keep up the great work.💎👌
Very tricky to ID coatepeque, nigrofasciata, siquia and kanna in an aquarium. I'll just call them Convict Cichlids. Thanks for this video. How about the Honduran Red Point? Is it a hybrid Convict Cichlid?
Thanks for your compliment. No, identifying those three species is not easy, especially when they are not yet mature. Amatitlania sp. 'honduras red point' is not a hybrid and occurs in Hoduras Rio Danli. It is still the question whether it is an independent species or a color morph of A. nigrofaciatus.
@cichlidsinthewild I see. Well by just looking at them Honduran Red Points, they look closely related to Convicts but only bluer in color and have a distinctive pointed dorsal fin tip. I love cichlids but right now I am more into the Archocentrus / Amatitliana family because they don't require huge tanks. Hard to clean huge tanks.
Relaxing❤

Having lived 5 years in Panama, I have an appreciation for the colorful and small blue-eyed nanoluteus and panamensis cichlids found there. Thanks for your video😊
Agree Fantastic country how I also visited several times and filmed beautiful cichlids.
Fantastic video of the best central american cichlid I've ever kept. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us all.
Thanks Jim keep tuned, more to come of Central America cichlids.

4:06 "Red Rainbow" 🤔
What do they all live off of? There is nothing to eat... 🤨 Music sounds like Burzum btw. 👍
Microfauna, fry, insects and other small things that drop on the surface, decaying plant matter, etc!
Skąd tam rybki się wzięły skoro powstało z pęknietych płyt tektonicznych to jezioro?
@@HoytKamishglony porastające kamienie też?
Al cichlids have adapted their own feeding behaviour some feed on plankton some on algae and other on insects ore young fish. There are even two species in the lake how feed only on scales of other cichlids.
Before the tectonic plates has shift the great Congo drainage flows trough where finally the cracks start and filled the lake and brought fish in the lake.
Did you spot any cyprinids in this shallow habitat?
Most of the time in some deeper water such as Acapoeta tanganicae
@cichlidsinthewild Thank you. Let me look up that name.
@@cichlidsinthewild Have you ever filmed Labeobarbus leleupanus in their habitat?
Dose anyone know the species at 4:33, Lamprichthys Tanganicanus maybe ?
Yep correct, Lamprichthys tanganicanus is the largest African Killifish.
Nice ! Good job !!!!!
Thanks
Incredible video, the Duboisi is one of my favorite cichlids
Yes it’s always great to see your favourite cichlid in their natural behaviour and habitat. Thanks for your compliment.
The sand lovers at 5:55 are great.
Personaly I prefer lake Malawi. Much much more species and colors.
Michel this is your choice and with many mores people and yes they are very colourful. There are several videos in my channel list where you can enjoy your favourite Malawi cichlids.
Well, this is becoming quite a ride! Im only 39min in but want to thank you for bringing us along. Beautiful places and amazing species!
Haha Some people complaining that my vids are to short. I am happy you enjoyed the video. Thanks
This sort of videos provides a much more detailed view and information about the whole adventure, logistic, fish habitat, struggles, people, etc... I really enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you once again!
@@apanhaesta Thanks again,

Thanks
Great video! thanks for sharing, it's always good seeing something a bit different.
Thanks, yes LT habitats do not only contain out of rock.
@@cichlidsinthewild Yes but most people will concentrate on them you went the other way, Thank you for that 🙂
The female cichlids look exactly like the shimmering water pattern on the sand and the males know exactly how to and when to shake/flash for best color. Smart fish.
Great you look at those details, and you enjoyed them.
What is the name of the specimen @ 2:22 and thumbnail, a Dimidiochromis?
I especially liked the Lamp. calvus or compressiceps.
Great you enjoyed your favourite species.
Wooow beatufuil ❤
Thanks Sergio
Thats Cyathopharynx furcifer? Noice! 6:40 . Maybe I saw an opthalmotilapia too @ 6:15?
Hi jeil, this is Cyathopharynx foae. Cyathopharynx furcifer should occur in the south of the lake according the specialist.
Where are the shopping trolleys ?
Will we see bichirs in your future videos?
Be careful! There also exist Goliath Tiger Fish in that lake!
and crocs ;)
@@mellissadalby1402 I have them on video nice fish too see them in their natural habitat
6:14 Much aquarium-feel with the plats in the sand there. ☺
I have an F1 Eretmodus Cyanostictus whose parents were from Kipili. This video was a real treat. Thank you for sharing! At 3:00 that looks like a Shuja Horei, but the horizontal bar in the middle is throwing me off. Do you have an ID on that one?
@@billscorner404 thanks, great you enjoyed the video.
I dove in Kipili. Once. I have never seen so many snakes under water as in Kipili. Many crocks as well. Even in the middle of the day. Tropheus are black /brown. Nothing anyone wanted.
You were lucky, I have seen only one snake and was surging for crocks to get them on video in 50 dives and have not seen one.
@@cichlidsinthewild It must be location specific. I have always carried three foot stick with me on all dives. Those are terrestrial snakes so it must be the habitat above the water which determines their presence. Luckily they do not see under water. When they were swimming right at me, I just tapped them with my stick to change their direction. Crocodiles are tricky. At the time I was there, local woman got attacked in mid day washing her cloth. I personally did not see one there but i trust locals who really do not go in the water. They know. Similar situation is is with Hippos. I have seen them almost daily on the land and marching at the bottom of the lake. But nowhere else. One has to be careful. Plenty of people die killed by crocks and Hippos. I learned to speak to locals about the potential dangers. They always know. On Lake Malawi there is Island when nobody is messing around with. i wanted to dive there but i was warned not to. So I did not. Crocks. although any time i rode a boat by it i never seen one. I trusted to locals.
I love this video
To many to mention, but find answers in my other videos. I uploaded this video this way to give you aquarists the challenge to find some species names themselves.
Would love to know what species we are looking at.............................
Lots and lots of Eretmodus Cyanostictus
Great work! very entertaining!
Thanks Maltes, fine you enjoyed the video.
