The beauty of Rome is overwhelming, sometimes in its negative meaning. Rome has too many monuments, too much beauty. It almost harms you in the way Stendhal meant it: the Stendhal syndrome is that sickness that makes you feel bad when you see a masterpiece. When you see the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, Saint Peter, the Forum, the ceiling of Palazzo Barberini, the Quirinale, the Fontana di Trevi, the several squares that adorn its centre, you almost feel invested by their greatness, the particular techniques that only those geniuses could have been able to perform: the ones who’re too sensitive are liable to faint, I’m not kidding.
