    If a heat pump costs ~£5k, how much will a repair cost? $$$$ Just gotta look at EV's and their repair costs! No point saving a few pounds on the fuel if 1x repair bill wipes out that saving. Unit costs need to be a lot lower imo to reduce the exposure risk of costly repairs.

    So how much did your installation cost? And if you had an optimal gas installation how would your bills compare?

    • @BenIsInSweden
      @BenIsInSweden Місяць тому

      The optimal gas installation would be where the major cost comes from, as it's almost identical to a heat pump (properly sized rads and pipework for low temperature heating). And when you're at that stage, a heat pump will run circles around a gas boiler and be far cheaper.

  • @Assimilator1
    @Assimilator1 Місяць тому

    Aren't many UK homes poorly insulated though? And thus unsuitable for heat pumps? (presumably down to less heat output?). 1 thing you sidestepped, if everyone did switch to heat pumps, their wouldn't be enough electricity available, unless of course some of the gas saved was used for new gas power stations! (Which yes, would be more efficient overall and less gas used. Assuming everyone could use heat pumps).

    • @BenIsInSweden
      @BenIsInSweden Місяць тому

      Insulation doesn't really have anything to do with it. Insulation affects heat loss and thus required heat pump size. The bit that matters is how you distribute that heat into the house. So you could have a super insulated house, but if your pipes are plastic microbore and tiny single depth radiators then the heat pump won't work that well (neither will a gas boiler). The main thing is insulation is typically going to be cheaper, and have a larger effect than upsizing rads etc, so it should be done first, and then fill certain gaps with upsized radiators. As for the grid, people at National Grid have already stated there's enough capacity for heat pumps. The roll out of heat pumps is at such a pace, that there are plenty of other things going on adding capacity/reducing load, that heat pumps aren't really an issue. e.g. home solar and battery are being installed far quicker, whilst solar doesn't have as much impact in winter, batteries can be used to load shift (e.g. charge up at night on a cheap overnight tariff to then use during the day). New renewables projects for adding capacity to the grid are being done, along with Gas power plants being retrofit to bring their efficiency up from ~45% to 60+%

    Really confusing with all that techno garbage. The reality..... My straight forward testing. On a cold day and night when your house is nice and warm, record the inside and outside temperatures just befor you switch off your Central Heating and leave it off. Next day or after say 8 hours, record the inside and outside tempoeratures and then switch on your central heating and record how long it takes to get your house back to the original nice and warm temperature. A very simple test that tests how good your house is at keeping warm.....i.e. insulation and also how good your Central Heating system is at warming up your house. Two very important parameters. In my case the temperature drop inside my house was only a few degrees with an outside temperature just above freezing and the time it took to get back to normal nice and warm temperature was half an our. One must rember that if you use heat pump central heating it must never be switched off becasue it rakes forever to get up to temperature... And of course Gas central heating does not run continuously but switches off and on when the room and/or the water thermostats including the boiler thermostat says so. It is not complicated but the speel coming from the sellers of jeat pumps is just rediculous and misleading... BE VERY CAREFUL when choosing a new heating system. Google "This is Why Heat Pumps May NOT Be The Future" and watch the UA-cam video.

    Once again a totally illogical view on the benefits of a heat pump and its viability in the UK where we have abundant 'home grown' gas which is much cheaper than electricity which we import. I run my gas boiler at 45 degrees when at home and it costs about 65pence per 12 hour day to run. If no one in the house all day no heating on. If its cold in the evening gas on at 65 degrees and house warm in 30 minutes (3 bed detached house) which cost tonight 65 pence. I only use hot water for 2 showers per day. There is NO incentive to spend £10,000 on a heat pump which is why the UK is sticking to gas.

    The cost of insulating our 1930s home to ensure that the heat pumped in, doesn't just escape, has been pretty steep. Even then, we only just made the cut when the Octopus Energy folk came to assess our home to fit a heat pump. We have 4kW of solar, 14kW of battery storage, under floor and external wall insulation, double glazing and an EV, so we are not afraid to adopt this tech, even when it doesn't make immediate economic sense, there is a bit of "Saving the Planet" thinking going on as well. But the complications of actually retrofitting the heat pump to our home with a single phase supply were quite serious. In the end we walked away from the heat pump deal, and resigned ourselves to wearing more jumper and oodies in the house and enjoying a lower gas bill as a result of all the insulation we've added to our home. The retro fitting of these technologies is a real issue and I hope that the government will legislate that ALL new homes be built with a Scandinavian mindset. Winter is coming when the AMOC shuts down in the next 10-50 years (oceanographicmagazine.com/news/amoc-atlantic-tipping-point-keeping-climate-stable-greatly-underestimated/) so future UK homes will need to bear this in mind. As for the rest of us living in older homes, all I can say is just do what you can to reduce your carbon footprint, but remember you've got to live as well and you can't do it all on your own.

    I love heat pumps & have worked with them in the HVAC industry all my life until I retired. Problem is I can't / won't have one on my 4 bed 1986 house because I'm not prepared to have a big ugly box on my rear patio or, out the front of my house. There is space down the side of my house for one but it's too close to a boundary fence so not permitted. As a result I'm sticking with my 5 year old gas boiler for now. Take away some of the location restrictions & include Air to Air Heat Pump systems in the BUS grant & I may reconsider. As for the Spark gap, you can bet you bottom dollar that the price of electricity will not come down to match gas, it will be gas prices going up to match electricity so yet another form of tax for us to bare.

    "400% efficient". Wow! Youi're in the wrong business. You have defied physics and made a perpetual motion machine. Free energy for everyone. What you actually mean is it's four times more efficient than an equivelent gas boiler, not the same thing. Otherwise an interesting expose on heat pumps and I wish you luck.

    • @MentalLentil-ev9jr
      @MentalLentil-ev9jr Місяць тому

      No, it means 400% (or more) efficient. If you are going to quote physics, make sure you understand it first. Efficiency for heat pumps means how much energy is pumped into the house for how much electricity used, so a COP of 4 (400%) means that if you put in 1kWhr of electrical energy in then you get 4kWhr of energy into the house. This is done because a heat pump takes energy from outside and transfers it inside, most of the heat does not come from electricity.

    • @silverfox9947
      @silverfox9947 Місяць тому

      @@MentalLentil-ev9jr I get what your saying despite COP being a non-scientific expression (Conference of Parties!), my point is that the video you presented is misleading. An advert for your products needs to be crystal clear so the public can trust you. I sincerely wish you luck and I am fully aware of the need for a drastic reduction in Co2.

    • @MentalLentil-ev9jr
      @MentalLentil-ev9jr Місяць тому

      @@silverfox9947 It's not my video. I agree that technically "efficiency" is the wrong term, but it does reflect what most people would think of in terms of efficiency in that with a COP of 5 I get out for the same energy input 5x the energy of a 100% efficient electric heater and an even higher multiple against a boiler which will never reach even 100%. Heat pumps are almost like magic, and it is only the artificially high electricity pricing compared to gas that stops them being cheaper to run than gas in any and every circumstance. They always save lots of carbon.

      Yes it's the upheaval that is putting me off. I'm probably going for a good infrared system instead but that gets me shouted at by heat pump worshippers "only 100% efficient, much more expensive" etc. I'm chronically ill and can neither afford the expense nor the personal energy required for the disruption a big installation would require in my circumstances. I can have as many or as few rooms done at a time starting with one in the bathroom. Panels on ceilings will free up space in our small rooms which we'll heat as required rather than blast the whole house every time you turn the heating up (I'm comparing with gas c/h we have now). I've calculated that for most of the period when we are using heating we'll only need to heat a third of the rooms that we heat now at any one time. As gas is three times cheaper than electricity we should at least break even depending on how efficient are the panels, which if sized right and used with intelligent controllers and sensors they should be. Less outlay, no service costs too. 👍

      @mustrumridcully3853 as will the price of clean renewable. check out the price you pay for your clean renewable now to what you paid for electricity 5 years ago and youll see what I mean. They dont care if its clean renewable or fossil fuel. They still want to make their same profit margins

      @@richsmart321 And this is almost what the problem is, the government set the tarrif, not the power companies, but renewable is cheaper to produce in environmental terms, yet set at a higher price. Fossil fuels dont have their environmental impact added in, so currently you are not paying an impact cost for your bad behaviour. We have solar and batteries and over the Summer our bill was £25 for 4 of those months, sucks to be a fossil fuel user.

    I have a flat.... needing to change boiler... there are no realistic options. HP manufactures are not addressing this market at all.

      Look into infrared ceiling panels, plenty of info on UA-cam. If you find a bad review from someone who bought one "off Amazon" keep looking for actual companies that fit proper home systems.
