“America’s Newest Cities” Housing Discrimination and Redlining in California’s Central Valley
The Historical Research Center at the Walter Stiern Library on the Campus of California State University, Bakersfield RECEIVES GRANT AWARD FROM CALIFORNIA HUMANITIES.
(Bakersfield, Calif) - California Humanities has announced the recent round of Humanities For All Quick Grant awards. The Historical Research Center at the Walter Stiern Library has been awarded $5,000 for its project entitles “America’s Newest Cities: Housing and ‘Redlining’ in California’s Central Valley.
The Humanities for All Quick Grant is a competitive grant program of California Humanities that supports locally-initiated public humanities projects that respond to the needs and interests of Californians, encourage greater public participation in humanities programming, particularly by new and/or underserved audiences, and promotes understanding and empathy among all our state’s peoples in order to cultivate a thriving democracy.
The story of Housing in the California’s Central Valley has been one of exclusion, isolation, and destruction. “America’s Newest Cities” is a public humanities project that examines the history and development of “red-lining” and housing discrimination in California’s Southern Central Valley, more specifically in Bakersfield and Kern County. Building on a web initiative which was started in 2022 by the Historical Research Center (HRC) (hrc.csub.edu/housing-history/), the project will trace the formation of housing policy, discrimination, and its effects, and show how it developed in a parallel fashion within California and in the United States. This project was made possible with support from California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Visit www.calhum.org . Funding supports public programming and a public gallery exhibit tracing this history as well as providing a critical analysis of its effects.
“America’s Newest Cities” will increase community engagement with the humanities through:
public lectures and community conversations
interactive exhibits
classroom presentations
Key project collaborators include:
Christopher Livingston (Director, Historical Research Center, Walter W. Stiern Library, CSU, Bakersfield)
Donato Cruz (Processing Archivist and Research Analyst, Walter W. Stiern Library, CSU, Bakersfield)
Oliver Rosales (Professor of History, Bakersfield College)
According to Project Research Analyst Donato Cruz, “this project is important because historians have not yet fully analyzed housing discrimination in California. I was taught, in grade school, that California was segregated by ‘de facto,’ unwritten but practiced policies. This narrative hides and buries the possible research that is yet to be discovered. Research on racially restrictive covenants have uncovered many new histories.“
He goes on to note that “research on racially restrictive covenants have uncovered many new conversations, especially in Bakersfield, a city with a large Latina/o/x population. The city has changed significantly since the 1950s, some previously racially restricted neighborhoods are now very diverse, but lack urban investment, including the neighborhood where I grewup. We went from three Hispanic families on two blocks in 1992, to a very diverse area, spanning miles.”
“California Humanities is excited to welcome our newest round of Quick Grant awards,” said the organization’s new President CEO Rick Noguchi. “In addition to using a variety of mediums to creatively engage new and long-standing audiences, these projects are also providing a unique humanities lens for discussing California histories and cultures, and important community issues.”
A complete list of all Humanities For All Quick Grants can be found on the calhum.org website here.
California Humanities, a nonprofit partner of the National Endowment of the Humanities, promotes the humanities - focused on ideas, conversation and learning - as relevant, meaningful ways to understand the human condition and connect us to each other in order to help strengthen California. California Humanities has provided grants and programs across the state since 1975. To learn more visit calhum.org, or follow California Humanities on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The HRC staff invites you to visit our 2023-2024 exhibit on redlining. “America’s Newest Cities,” is an exhibit that takes the subaltern narrative of inequalities in suburban development, investment of urban renewal, and the lack of investors as a resource to “other” communities. Stewart's Hobby Shop was my grandparents' shop. They are both deceased now. Their daughter, my mom, passed 3 years ago. I have some items from the hobby shop. Is there a museum in Kern County where these items could be donated for display? I don't know much about the shop history having grown up in Seattle. But they do have a surviving son living in California.

Of course no one will refuse free money, but you need to realize that this will only hurt race relations...The fact that money will be taken from citizens of the US and given to other citizens based on each others similarities of skin colors with people from the past will create great animosity ....Does reparations" promote the general welfare "...will this "insure domestic tranquility"?.....I think not....This is a political move by the politicians....It will end badly regardless of what some panel of Harvard jackasses has come up with......I'm right, so if you disagree with me, you are wrong...Have a nice day. 😜

Reparations: The only Crime, Where someone who didn’t commit the Crime has to pay the fine. Why don’t you wait until there is a time-machine an actually fine the people who did this to you. I’m am not guilty of slavery. So the USA government is going to pay back Reparations and take money from Black taxpayers to pay Black taxpayers-genius. Your going to get your justice in Heaven. God will sort it all out then. Just call on the name of Jesus. See other comment.

100% !!!! Agree with Reparations and I’m a White male!!!!! LET’s START AT the BEGINNING!!!! Eve ate the Fruit in the Garden of Eden, before that Life was Perfect on this earth with just Adam only. Therefore I want ALL women to pay back ALL men for this fallen mess of a world we live in (including slavery). Source: King James Bible, book of Genesis chapters 1, 2 and 3 Now that is Fair..!! Any takers?? To get out of this mess of the world just call on the name of Jesus to be saved. In this dispensation we are “Saved by Grace through faith, without works of the Law, not of works lest any man should boast”Ephesians 2:8). Thank You

But let’s NOT talk about black slave owners or the fact the Republican Party was formed to end slavery. Facts. Here’s a couple more. Let’s not talk about how many White men died fighting to End Slavery (which they did) during the Civil War. Let’s not talk about how over half the country fraught against slavery and never owned slaves or supported slavery. Shhh we don’t mention that. Just give us money

This is so awesome! I had the privilege of being a student of Dr. Stanley in the late 80's! Dr. Stanley was one of the best professors I have ever had. He was a considerate, understanding and compassionate man. He was intellectually one of the most brilliant people I ever met. His bookshelf was full of books! Lol Genius!
