    I just started learning the Alto saxophone, just wondering if it is possible to learn it from the C Major pentatonic and G Major pentatonic scales. The Happy birthday song

    • @LearnSaxophoneWithMatthewSmith
      @LearnSaxophoneWithMatthewSmith Рік тому

      Hi Richard, yes, certainly the basic version of Happy Birthday can be played in any key, including G and C major. You would need the more than the pentatonic scale though ie the major scale. Drop me a line and we can talk more about it: matthewsmithmusic1@gmail.com

If I can read the music I can play it with practicing you know. What I never been able to do is improvisation. • @LearnSaxophoneWithMatthewSmith
      @LearnSaxophoneWithMatthewSmith Рік тому

      Hi There, it can depend on how you're playing the D. Are you using the palm key, or all 6 fingers down? If you're using the palm key, I would suggest using all 6 fingers instead. When you use this fingering, then practice some long notes on it, using a tuner so that you can monitor your sound and make any necessary adjustments. I hope that helps. Best wishes, Matthew

    Mmm ... while it's tempting to agree (using a strong reed does not automatically make someone a better player) someone playing the full range of the instrument confidently with a 4.5 reed is hardly likely to be a beginner :) I picked up a cheap clarinet a month ago - it came with a reed strength 3 ... could barely get a note out of it. Fitted a 1.5 and it was as easy as blowing a sax. Now, I can use the harder reed (it sounds mellower- more orchestral - but it's still hard work - lot of breath support needed. I'll probably get a 2 or 2.5 for a while.
