Seven Tips For Recruiting Top Talent in Construction
A couple of different articles crossed Wayne’s desk on the subject of attracting and recruiting talent. While they came from different authors and different publications, they were in agreement on a great many points. Did they waste time and ink on basics like pay and benefits? You bet they did. In case you need reminding, it’s 2024, and your pay and benefits packages must not only be competitive with your neighbor contractors, they must be competitive with virtually every other employer in your area.
Please tune in this week as Wayne reviews and opines on their seven tips for attracting talent. What strikes you? Are the tips on point, or has the competitive hiring world already passed them by in favor of other, better techniques? Please share with us in the comments.
In the dynamic world of construction, the key to sustained success lies in empowering your rising leaders to navigate challenges with finesse, inspire their teams, and drive growth. Might Mission Trips Be Good for Your Construction Company?
Переглядів 195День тому
We must acknowledge that overseas ventures to assist people and regions blighted by want and poverty may not be right for every contractor. But there is at least one PCA member company that has found plenty of unanticipated benefits spawned from a noble desire to help people and do good. Shook Construction’s mission trips started under former CEO Bill Whistler and continue under current CEO Chr...
Resolving Any Workplace Disagreements

Dave Kline wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that at his company, he was frequently called upon to mediate and resolve disputes. We all try to run warm, caring, and collegial companies, but let’s face it - strong-willed people simply will come into disagreement and even conflict at certain times. Please tune in this week as Wayne reveals Kline’s eight-step Alignment Pyramid and discusses the three ...
Three Unexpected Mindsets for Growth

Arlin Sorenson (yes, we’re cribbing from him AGAIN) introduced Wayne to the writing of Craig Groeschel. Groeschel says: “Mindset is important. It determines how and how well you will lead.” In order to grow and develop your career and your company, your mindset will need to evolve to allow your behaviors to change so you can do and be more and to amplify your impact. Please tune in this week as...
What Are The BEST Business Books?
Переглядів 371Місяць тому
Wayne regularly gets emails asking what books are the best, most transformational, eye opening, or informative. Put on the spot on a busy day, it’s sometimes difficult to give the kind of thoughtful answer the question deserves. Please tune in this week as Wayne shares the very best business books he has encountered. And no, he doesn’t include his own books among them; that would be like cheati...
The Specter of Retirement and How to Prepare
Переглядів 449Місяць тому
For many contractors and entrepreneurs (yours truly included!), retirement is a scary concept! With Bundy, Dennis, and Bill B. departing PCA in the last three years, retirement is suddenly much more a concern for us than it had ever been. While retirement has different definitions for different people, it nonetheless represents the beginning of a different era and way of life. Please tune in th...
How Did You Get Out of The Companies YOU Built?

PCA’s Doug McCright and Wayne were visiting with a very successful mechanical contractor who surprised them with a question no one else had asked Doug in his 12 years as a consultant. Before PCA, Doug had worked for several enterprises and scaled them over a period of years. Without going into too much detail, let’s just say he left them in much better condition that he found them. The surprise...
16 Brilliant Charlie Munger Quotes

Who the heck was Charlie Munger, and why should we care about his business and life philosophies? Funny that almost everyone in business has heard of Warren Buffett, but comparatively few had heard of his partner Charlie Munger prior to his passing this year at the age of 99. Munger was an incredible success who gave hundreds of millions of dollars to philanthropic causes during his lifetime. A...
What’s Your Social Media Footprint?
Переглядів 2972 місяці тому
During the pandemic, construction leaders needed new, innovative ways to communicate with their teams which were, for the first time, remote. Several members approached us about using video messaging, how it might work, and what applications were appropriate. For some, this was the beginning of creating their social media footprint. Contractors who successfully use social media have found that ...
Think Like A Bronze Medalist

Thinking about the recent summer Olympics, the medalists - the very best people in the world in their events - must be supremely happy, right? Maybe, but maybe not. Is it true that bronze medalists were visibly and measurably happier than the silver medalists who just surpassed them? How can that be? Please tune in this week as Wayne discusses an article from Neil Pasricha’s blog based on a stu...
Water and the Power of Positive Thinking

Dr. Masamu Emoto, a Japanese scientist, found that our “thoughts, feelings, ideas, and music can affect the molecular structure of water.” In a famous experiment, he placed distilled water into small jars and labeled them with positive and negative words and phrases. When flash frozen, the water that had been positively labeled (with words like beauty, passion, happiness) showed beautiful and s...

What do Construction CEOs Earn?

Uh oh! This week we’re taking up that taboo subject: MONEY! The two universal constraints in business life are time and money. We talk about time (the lack of it) freely and all the time. How to Achieve Lifelong Success

Didn’t think we would have a construction vlog using Seinfeld as a source, did you? It’s funny (get it?) how Seinfeld’s advice on life success applies directly to the construction game. You are right on so many points - contractors carry more than others (except farmers), good & bad stress, & fight or flight. Stress, pressure makes us who we are, keeps us alive, and gives you that confidence to take things head on. I learned to deal with it by eating a fair amount of humble pie and changing my attitude. You never know who you are or who you're working with until they're under pressure.

I don't think anyone knows their leadership style. In construction, i think leadership and management overlap in risk - do we take the job or not? How do we make it a success for all parties? Managers quantify & contract, leaders solve problems & make it happen.

Love your analogy to diets and fitness. Nearly everyone wants to achieve "The Thing" - very few want to consistently do the things that get to the thing. No amount of planning, tools, or scoreboards will help if you don't change the underlying habits.

I believe what makes many people unhappy is when they cannot do their job the they can do it and the way they find useful and necessary. Because somebody gets to tell them how to do it, what silly and counterproductive restrictions and rules need to be taken into account, etc. Futility and seeing everything that is necessary and that could be, going to waste, is incredibly frustrating. Engineers like to solve problems, but are often paid to construct things in a way that they break faster so we can sell more, and also they need to make it cheaper and lower quality than would be necessary. They have to do presentations to their bosses, but are not the type and are not trained to do presentations like that, let alone to somebody who lacks skills and context to make decisions. An engineer who can do the actual job of engineering, is usually a happy engineer. But that does not happen that often, from what I see. Lawyers dont always get to defend what they actually believe is the right thing, but they have to argue in favor of who pays them, and within the rules that sometimes contradict each other. Lawyers who can help people they believe in, in legal matters, are probably happy lawyers. People in hospitals tell me, dealing with life and death every day is hard but doable. Dealing with horrible budget, letting people die because you lack ressources, that is what gets to you, wears you out, makes you tired unhappy and want to quit. Also when you get home but cannot pay your bills, cannot afford to sleep in an appartment where it is quiet during the time you want to sleep, having to take public transportation to and from work, having to get up an hour earlier and getting home an hour late, because of delays, then spending time grocery shopping with low budget trying to make ends meet. That takes away from the recovery and from the overall life quality and family life. Medical staff who can do their job, and who have the means to live a good private life, are usually happy people. So I believe adulting makes happy and having your hands tied makes unhappy. Whatever your profession is. Some people like tangible work and tangible results, some people are wired to work on cpomplex theories for decades, or on philosophical or poetic ideas. Some people want to see the brigde they built, some people are happy for the personality they have become trying to do something that eventually failed. From my perspective, failing is not what makes people deeply unhappy. Not feeling able to even try and do your best, in a field you feel passionate about, because of silly restrictions you cannot free yourself from, is frustrating. Or all the restrictions on your life and health and family and future, because you first have to figure out the money game and the beaurocracy and all that comes with it - which seems to hard for who you are and where you are at. When everything else that life has to offer, and when everything that you would like to offer to the world, is behind that absolutely unsurmountable paywall. Having to first jump through all kinds of impossible hoops before you can finally do the actual thing you are wired to do. That problem is everywhere and that tends to eat up our souls.

Good stuff, Wayne. I especially like the point about the next generation or successors needing to be involved (or even driving) the succession process. If a company doesn't have future management/leadership pushing for a succession plan, that probably says something about what should happen to future ownership... On the flip side, you probably can't recruit and retain great management/leadership without some vision or succession plan...

As an employee of a "small business" the only culture that exists between all of us are the minutes or seconds of interaction between everyone there in the early morning or late afternoon. We meet SO MANY people who change perspectives or outlooks on a nearly monthly basis. There is almost zero connection between company and person. We all show up and complete our jobs for a paycheck daily. The people we meet can make profound changes on our lives but the miniscule amount of time we have to interact personally with each other is profound. We've had 5 employees pass away in the last 2 years and not a single person has been able to pay respects to those we lost. We have to continue working and playing the game until we're next. Family and community mean nothing in business and that needs to change. We are all family. We deserve to love and be loved. That's something business neglects.

Clickbait with no real answer. Sing Kumbaya around the campfire with your team all you want, it only goes so far until you are taken advantage of. This, in addition to concrete systems is effective. Not everyone understands or operates the same. Some work with positive coaching and feedback, while others improve with monetary or other measurable incentive. Incentives should be rotated regularly (quarterly) or they become stale and systems get abused.
