Our lovely day out on this 100 year old preserved railroad.
"This is a Narrow gauge preserved railway line (1,067 mm gauge) situated in Vennesla near Kristiansand and using steam locomotives and carriages which are over 100 years old.
The coal is glowing and the water is boiling on the old steam locomotives on the Setesdalsbanen. Let the venerable station buildings, stylish teak carriages, hundred-year old locomotives and the smell of steam take you back in time on a unique journey through a little piece of Norway.
The Setesdalsbanen is a narrow gauge (1,067 mm gauge) preserved railway line which follows an 8 km route between Grovane and Røyknes stations in Vennesla, 20 km outside Kristiansand.
The line between Kristiansand and Byglandsfjord was opened in 1896. Norway’s first preserved railway line opened just two years after the line’s official closure in 1962. The "timber slides" or log flumes have now been converted to hiking trails. Our one-way trip was gorgeous and we had such great weather.
