Here is where I document my explorations with modular synthesis/VCV Rack, focusing on generative ambient and techno. Just experimenting with sounds, concepts, ideas and letting the process unfold.

So inspiring! I've got to get into doing this
ty dear! i also find vcv to be very inspiring :)
Super mellow. This is LUSH!
ty very much! 🙏
🔥🔥🔥
😊❤
Fantastic, Cheers!
hey, cheers! i truly appreciate it! <3
Excellent.
very much appreciate it! <3
Excelente!!
mt obrigado mano <3
Nice one🎧👌
Tysm <3
it’s so inspiring! congrats! how do you organise the modules in mini cases like that and how do you change the background of the rack? it looks very neat 🔥
thank you so much <3 for both things i used the Purfenator module, by DanT. it took some trial and error to set up, but i found that enabling "split vertically"(on skiff settings) and "ignore zoom" (on the BG section) works best :)
what program is this? looks awesome!
appreciate it! its called vcv rack, its free and open source :)
You really make really nice leads and efffects. If you don't mind , mind me asking how you make the wobly vibrati lead and the reese base ? or rather what's the concept / what you aim for ?
tysm! there's actually a vcv Selection I created for adding pitch vibrato to synths, you can see its modulation shape at 01:13:37 (it's the combination of LFO's and attenuators on the left). and for the synth, theres not a lot to it, i just try to make significant choices, and make sure each note blends in and out nicely (wich wasnt much the case this time, but is usually what i aim for). the sound is very much inspired by vangelis and state azure. the reese bass is just a detuned saw with filtering, waveshaping and chorus. on the chorus, i tend to make the depth and rate modulations be at inverted phases so they compensate each other. lastly i added the 4>1 switch and the slew for the note changes :)
Hey, Really cool patch. Funnily enough, my computer hasn't been keeping up with 16 track patches so i moved back to the 8 patch and was focusing on making the voices themsellves more musical instead of just overwhelming the listener with voices like i usually do.
Same here! streaming in 1080 can be a bit CPU-intensive, so this setup also helps balance that out. Plus, I almost got twice the detail with half the number of tracks 😊 (even tho it took a bit longer)
@@antioedipus72 Congrats. And also, thanks for the 1080p, It makes analyzing what the modules are doing a lot easier as you can actuallly make out the smaller knobs.
@@josephperkins-z7n Np! I've also been actively trying to remember to zoom in while adjusting the knobs to maintain a more concise visual storytelling. maybe i make it a habit anytime soon haha
@@antioedipus72 appreciate it. I also have this habit of working super zoomed out. It makes me feel like im watching my creation from above.
levels to this
Love this!
tysm! <3
The UA-cam algorithm has blessed me with this suggestion 🦾 keep up the good work
thank you so much <3
👍
oh hi there! I just wanted to say thanks for the fantastic Purfenator module. honestly I recommend it to people almost every single day 😊
It reminds me like 20 years ago i was searching in the basement of my apartment building and I found a KORG MS-20 sitting there collecting dust. It was in good conditions ! I finally sell it for 600$ CAD in those days.
Wow, just fantastic channel and music that you make. Little tip: turn Curve knob of Bezier to 1+ o'clock to get smoother signal modulation. At default position at 12' it's just linear and not so organic (unless you want it to be so!). I'm the author of this module, and I have a feeling I chose not the best default value.
thanks for your comment and for the module design! i use the bezier on almost every patch so this will definitely going to be helpful
This rack setup is bonkers. Cheers!
Really like this track, and thank you for posting the 'making of' video! If you may, it would be great to learn how you created the dub delay.
i appreciate it! well, you can see each step i took on the video, but if want more general advice, i'd say it all comes down to finding a cool delay setting (on this one i used both a dedicated delay and the delay on return tracks, so it produces kind of a polymetric effect) and then modulating the modulations to create that intertwining movement. On the first synth, i sent the envelope signal to two attenuators, wich had their scale modulated by slow bezier curves at opposed phases. the result is that it varies the envelope's amplitude each time the chord is played, for each parameter independently. Ultimately, all modulation signals are being attenuated by a variable ammount, except for a few on the wavetable VCO and ADSR. I hope I explained that clearly.
Thank you! I'll give it a try 👍.
How did you customize so much of vcv's look? Amazing jam
thank you very much! i added both the skiffs and background with the Purfenator module, by DanT.
Very nice.
Thats dope brother
thank you very much!
Muito bom mesmo! Sem dúvida, você é um dos melhores que utiliza o VCV Rack...
nao tenho nem roupa pra receber um elogio desses kkkk mas muito obrigado meu querido!
@antioedipus72 haha
oooooh, the groove on this one is very present. Do you release performed versions of your patches anywhere ? It would be cool if there was a bandcamp for like practice patches. "1. Nomadology (Ambient|Breakbeat) "
i do plan on releasing them but i wanted to polish them a bit more first.. mixing and all that. but when i'm done i'll let you know fs! (this particular upload is just for the Patchstorage preview of the "work in progress" version)
Interesting. How exactly did you make that kick drum ? and why all the 4 > 1 Switch thingys ?
Every voice / instrument is so interesting. How do you make em ?
so, the first switch alternates between the first two sequences, while second one alternates between the second and fourth sequences. then both switches are sent to a 3rd one, to alternate between them. there's probably a smarter way to do it, but that was just my approach for making longer patterns
@@josephperkins-z7n well its a very broad question and i'm afraid theres not a quick way to answer it haha but basically i just mess with the parameters until it sounds cool, and practice practice practice if you got any more specific questions tho, lmk!
@@antioedipus72 I see, thank you. It is a really broad question now that you mention it. I appreciate the help man.
@@antioedipus72 very interesting. Thank you.
how do you get these nice looking boxes around your modules?
it's the Purfenator module, by DanT
@@antioedipus72 thanks, just checked it, looks dope
Wow! That's really nice. What's that magic with the virtual cases?
tysm! i used the Purfenator module, by DanT, for both the cases and background image
@@antioedipus72 Thank's!! I really enjoy your palette. Keep 'em coming. If you ever come close to Kiel, let me know. I'd love to hear your art on a big sound system. Cheers Alex
YOu are on a roll bro. I'mma have to find time to watch these.
I just missed stream. I'm gonna recreate this one too for practice with pads.
This sounds amazing. Really want to get into making this spacey ambient kind of techno
I'm gonna catch one of these, somehow.
UA-cam is failing me when it comes to notifications. Thanks so much for this.
Very good and nice sounds! ❤❤
how do u get this background?
i used the Purfenator module, by DanT (for both the skiffs and background)
Sick as hell. Sadly, there is no youtube stream.
i just posted this one on Patchstorage, link on description!
what software are you using?
it's called VCV Rack
Broooooo, this is lit. Im still trying to follow along and recreate your vangelis patch but this one is right after! Thanks for sharing. (I also won't be posting the patches cus they are yours, its the right thing to do)
i'm really glad it helps! feel free to post eventual recreations, especially if you credit me on the description. also if you got any questions about the patches lmk and i'll answer when possible 🙏
niiiiiiiiiiice
very much: yes! 😍
this is absolutely fucking stellar. How did you get those acoustic sounding sax instruments? Is that all synthesis?
very much appreciated! and yes, its all synthesis. that lead is actually just a filtered dual vco saw lead, with some complex pitch modulation. there are two unsynced lfos, one of them sent to the attenuator input, and the other one modulates the attenuation ammount (from 0 to 1%)
Amazing work !
thanks a lot!
Wow, what a patch. I am trying to breakdown what you do in this patch but it cant.
haha thanks man. i started this one on a previous video called Space Environment, it might be easier to follow if you feel like it
Whats the module to create this crazy background?! I love it !
it's the Purfenator module, by DanT. I also like it a lot
Ahhhhh. Cool. I have been wondering this myself.
Really love this patch!
i appreciate it very much 🤗
How to set such background picture ?
on DanT's Purfenator module just click "image background" > "- load image". also make sure "draw background" and "ignore zoom" are checked
Sorry, I am not familiar with this, is this a software ? what's the name please ? Thank you
yes, its vcv rack, a free and open source program that emulates modular systems. no problem! ☺
cross modulation goes crazy 🥵🥵
lmao
