Will this Big Block Chevy run to replace the one in my 72 C10?
I picked this truck up from my good buddy Tony out at Texas Square Bodies. It's got a Big block 454 that has been off the road since 1998. Lets see if we can get it running with minimal effort to replace the ruined one in my 72.

Failed hydraulic flat tappet cam break in Big Block Chevy 454 in my C10

Well this sucks. I can't tell you exactly what I did wrong here or if it was due to a parts failure. This is the first time I've ever broken in a hydraulic flat tappet cam so I'm sure it was something I did wrong. I used the cam manufacturers zinc additive and conventional oil. It could've been the burnt spark plug wires causing a misfire that ruined the break in stage, who knows. It could have...

Damn dude that sucks. Everyone makes mistakes when they are learning. It’s not stupidity it’s a learning process. Some lessons are expensive and that sucks but it happens.
@@El_Jefe_TX thanks buddy. It’s the way she goes sometimes! I appreciate the kind words though!
Coming along great!! You are kicking ass on this build!!
That polylube 250 is a problem and i don't know who told you to use it internally on engine. I'm sure it's gelling up and restricting oil flow. Big mistake. Use assembly lube. Heck even motor oil and you wouldn't have the issues you are seeing. And your LS problems... never reuse roller lifters especially with high mileage
I didn’t have a problem with the Polylube on the LS, that was a brand new cam and lifters. The issue with the original cam on the Ls was due to the timing gear bolts not being torqued properly, allowed the cam to walk and spin a lifter in the bore. I never removed the cam or lifters when I put the engine in the suburban. A machinist that I worked for many years ago gave it to me when I rebuilt the LS and I had him polish the crank. He builds 2000+ HP engines for drag cars so I trust it wasn’t the polylube that was the issue honestly.
Did you lash valves correctly? Meaning each cylinder on base circle? EOIC exhaust opening and you lash intake. Intake closing and lash exhaust
I did it how I have done hydraulic lifters in the past, and second guessed myself and went back and did it again. I’m better I should have just left it how I had it the first time. Probably too much preload on them after adjusting the second time.
I just watched your video on spring change cam etc. Unless you did it off camera, you did it totally wrong. Not knocking you just trying to help. You have to have lifters on base circle of cam. If not and you lash them on the ramps or sides that's why you destroyed the cam.
@@tonym6854I did redo it off camera. I think the lifters were too pumped up from the original preload adjustment and I’m sure I did not get the preload right afterwards. I’m not blaming anyone but myself honestly.
Hydraulic roller cam and lifters for the win, period.
No doubt about that going forward!
You can't use the F word when starting an engine with a new cam.
Some lessons are learned the hard way unfortunately!
What cast manifolds are those? 2.5" outlet?
They're the inexpensive ones on ebay and other sites. They are 2.5" outlet, I bought outlet pipes with flanges from CPP but they come with flanges to weld to 2.5" pipe as well. "I loved your video! I have a Chevrolet C20 crew cab with a 350 engine. Which electric fans would you recommend buying, or is there one from another car that I could adapt? Do you think I might have problems with the alternator's amperage?"
The ones i used in this video work great, should work great with your 350. You may need to upgrade to the higher amp alternator offered on some trucks and suburbans.
@@cwsgarage Thanks for answering, that's what I'm afraid of. I've been looking for the data on how much those fans consume, but there's no data. I'm looking to see if I need to update the alternator, but most likely it will be necessary.
@@helio7946 I believe they pull around 30 AMPs each at start up and around 25 after settling in.

Dallas area in Texas
Looking at purchasing the same control arms, thank you for the video.
I would do spindles and springs if I had to do it again.
@@cwsgarage What is the reason? Was there a problem with the control arms or just the labor involved?
@@jamesbergman4917 The sway bar bracket holes lined up poorly and the sway bar just lands at a weird angle. Also the spring pockets are really low, so if you live in an area with uneven roads or just rough roads they will eventually take a beating. After seeing how much easier it is to do spindles and springs I would do that every time going forward.

Smart. Have the same tractor and was thinking of doing the same. Glad it works!
It’s a great little tractor. It’s been invaluable!
Best way for me to remember, 1,2,4 intake 3,5,6 exhaust. Rotate engine and act like I’m looking from the back. Do the same order. I built many inline cat 6 cylinders that way. I did the valves on my 24 valve like 3 times and finally found one injector was making a rattling sound $$$$$
That is a really good tip! I will try remember that the next time I go to do this. Newton always got the tricks of the trade! Oh yeah those injectors were not cheap! I will likely replace them on here in the future, I have one I can't get to stop leaking between the body and the head. I'll try another crush washer one more time and see what happens lol.
Use a plasma cutter to notch frame.
I'm not that skilled with one. Maybe I'll invest in a more powerful one in the future and practice.
