Oregon Foraging: Lobster Mushrooms in Tillamook State Forest
Переглядів 10 тис.4 роки тому
Let's see what we can find in Tillamook State Forest and learn about lobster mushrooms. Filmed on 9/26/20.
Isn't it true that you want to cut the mushrooms from the root and not pluck it?
Deer/mushroom; all sustenance, all karma! Glad you sent them love after the fear!
Coral mushroom is awesome!! All u have ti oay attention to, is the color, sorta.
This video has such a great vibe! Tomorrow will be my first mushroom hunt and I’m heading out to Tillamook. This has me so pumped!
Good luck out there! Chanterelles finally started to really pop last week after the rain, but I’m afraid the freezing temps at night are cutting this season very short. Look for sheltered areas/microclimates, especially near young Western Hemlock and mature Doug Fir.
Part 2?
❤❤❤
How high do the king grow in Gifford
Do you worry about hunters? I wear my orange and I’m a gun advocate myself but just walking around with them in the woods worries me.
Sure, humans are probably my biggest concern when going out alone, but I'm not that concerned in the first place. I wear my orange and carry bear spray and a cell phone, and I try to give any large mammals (including hunters) plenty of space when I notice them.
Are they edible?
My favorite mushrooms.
It just looked like the color of a lobster but tasted nothing like it.
This is great Video .May I ask you what month of the year this mushroom you found and the name of this forest is in Gifford Pinchot as Washigton Right? Thank you
I love the authenticity and background noises in your video! What elevation were you finding these mushrooms at?
The last plant you found is sarcodes sanguinea, aka "ice plant". We usually see them in spring associated with fruiting of morels down here in the Lassen area of far northern California.
am like it
Unicorn poop! 🤣Love it
You have such a calm, peaceful energy. Adore your respect and love for nature!! This video was a joy to watch and very educational. Thank you :)
I thought the same exact thing. Such a great vibe! Similar feeling to a lot of Christian Schaffers videos!
Is it still a good king belete if the cap has some red? Pores are whiteish yellow
Great video dude... keep it going! Need more inspiring come along with me foraging videos on UA-cam for sure. I also recently found the violet webcap for the first time which was in among loads of a deceivers,.. super nice find. Had no idea what it was until researching tho. Just knew it was v nice. Will be in one if my videos when I eventually get around to editing all the footage I have lol 🤪
Great video, thanks!
I like your video! I feel like we could be good friends lol! Anyways, I couldn’t tell for sure because you didn’t show a great top view of what you were calling a “white chanterelle” however it looked a lot more like a “scaly chanterelle” aka gomphus floccosus. Like I said, I couldn’t see super well in the video, but it looked to have a scaly top and not a smooth one like Cantharellus subalbidus. But you seem intelligent so I’ll shut up now! Again, nice video and happy hunting!
Im new here but enjoying the content so i subscibed but also happy 100 for your subs
Thats an edible coral if your worried pick by collor. Orange, yellow and white are edible but the more commenly toxic is the darker species like the purple
Awesome video. Do you have any favorite trails in Gifford Pinchot? Heading there in the morning to mushroom hunt- super excited for a first visit and hoping to find some amanita muscaria 🍄
GP is a big place! I personally have only had luck in a couple spots, and I haven’t been since last year. There are lots of opportunities out there and this is the perfect time for it. I’d say look for Doug fir & hemlock forest with salal and Oregon grape nearby and you should be able to find something. Good luck!
Thank you for making such a great video 😃 I've been studying up can't wait till I make some friends and can go foraging myself. Take care sir. 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it! I’d check around your local Facebook mushroom foraging groups-I know people find foraging buddies on the PNW Mushroom Social group. Good luck out there!
I got stressed out when he butchered the coral mushroom. Dont do that
Haha sorry to stress you out! Really no harm done. It was an older mushroom, bound to crumble and decompose on its own-I just helped it along a little bit ☺️
Love the content. New sub!
Awesome! Thanks, Bee!
Hey me and the wife look for mushrooms on i90 do you have any good spots there?
Hey! I haven’t personally hunted off I-90 but I know some folks have decent luck around Snoqualmie Pass. Good luck out there!
Really missing that forest right about now! I so loved that you called it gills because I can totally relate. I can never think of the right names when Im so excited and trying to film as well 😆Great vid! Keep um comin!
Hey, thanks! Your channel looks great too! If only these dang brains could keep it together when we find exciting mushrooms!
@@fungiquestnw5346 thank you! hahaha its just too much to handle! 😆
Teach me ur ways!
Stay tuned for more!
Fun video! I love your enthusiasm and all the pretty mushrooms you found. Can’t wait to find some of those white chanterelles too
Aw, thanks! I would say the same about every video you put out. I’m also a Midwest-PNW transplant! Can’t wait for some more rain this year.
@@fungiquestnw5346 thank ya! I hadn’t realized you were from the Midwest! Whereabouts and where are you now? I know another person from the UA-cam that also moved from the Midwest to Portland around the same time I did. I can’t wait for more rain too and all the fun fall mushrooms to come! I’m so grateful that I live in a place where I can pretty much find mushrooms or minerals all year round.
I moved to Portland with my wife about 6 years ago and ever since then my love for all things fungi has just gotten a little out of hand haha. I love it here too! I’ll have to get out to the coast soon to see what I can see. Stopped off at Mt. Hood a few days ago and everything was crrrrrrrrispy.
@@fungiquestnw5346 the coast is great for mushrooms! You and your wife are welcome to come hunting if or when you’re in the area! I don’t have any mushroom friends here yet 🙂
@@Mushroom_club Aw, awesome! Well consider us mushroom friends! 🍄 ✨ I will give you a shout!
Bring on some more fungi vids!! You're totally awesome!
New vid coming soon! Thank you so much-I'm glad you enjoyed this one!
New vid is up! Thanks again!
Did you end up learning more about indigenous claims to the land? It would be cool to see a follow up video with someone whose land your on talking about this or links to existing videos or resources about it!
I did end up learning a bit! I added a subtitle in the video indicating that area as Kalapuya land, rather than Multnomah or Clackamas (both Upper Chinook bands) like I had guessed. This particular piece of land looks like it probably belonged to Tualatin Kalapuya. The Kalapuya tribes have a very interesting history, but of course, a very sad one as well. They occupied the land in West/Central Oregon from the coast to the Cascades. They went from a population estimated around 15,000 to about 600 due to colonization and disease by the time treaties took effect, and they ended up ceding their land in exchange for removal to the Grand Ronde reservation. More info here: libraryguides.lanecc.edu/kalapuya
Hey! I’m in Salem and really wanting to get into foraging. What can I find during the summer in terms of mushrooms?
Hey! Do it! I would recommend joining up with the Willamette Valley Mushroom Society if you haven’t yet. They’re based in Salem and should have lots of good resources for your area. Summer can be tough when it’s dry, and we’re in a statewide drought, so it’s safe to say that mushrooms will be harder to find in general over the next few months. That said, when we *do* get some good rain, you can find oyster mushrooms any time of the year, morels will still be going off for another few weeks at higher elevation burns, and lobster mushrooms and chanterelles have been known to start as early as June on the coast range. You can also find chicken of the woods and lions mane in mid-late summer, so keep your eye on the dead/dying wood when you’re out! Good luck!
@@fungiquestnw5346 wow! Thank you so so much for taking the time to write me a thoughtful answer! Is this group on Facebook or where would I find them?
Can you find Lobsters in Jan -March?
Good question! Generally, no, lobsters are found late summer to mid fall. That said, mild weather and coastal environments can stretch the season in all sorts of cool ways, especially in microclimates formed by the terrain.
Jackpot! Lobsters are so delicious
lobster heaven, good haul.
Thanks! I was super psyched. Made some delicious lobster pasta and fried a bunch up for garlic lobster chips. Too good!
