At one point Tony said: about the workhouse "They were punishing people for being poor.' And we are still doing that. 😥
Imagine walking mile after mile and getting absolutely nowhere… yep, welcome to food service!

oh walter my glorious king, where do I begin?
@@samdaman2716Get the materials and a man named Jesse
7 shillings a day collecting dog poop?! Bloody hell! The water carrying job only made 3 shillings max! Wow, I’ve been watching this show way too much 🤗
Oh Tony you lovable bloke please be careful
just to let that guy know we don't say Mentally R-d anymore it's a Slur, now it's Intellectually Developmentally Disabled.
Having watched a number of these programs, the one thing that sticks you is how did anyone manage to survive and live 46:13
it feels illegal to be this late to a vid
Watching this whole series 2 years later. I love it. Watched every one. Too bad there isn't more. Tony does a great job recreating and explaining history. Thumbs up to all of em
We watched this at school and me and my friend were laughing at the content Vs channel name
Love Tony he always makes me smile
Walking the bridge gave me sweaty palms...How did people actually work on these structures back then?
it's good to see stuart peachey again
In USMC boot camp we had the Confidence Course with a flying man rope thing, probably 30-40 feet tall. We were over water should you, and many did, fall. ca 1980.
if you ever smoke additive free tobacco you'll A. be angry youve been smoking shitte your whole life and B. realize youve paid 100x the cost you would have by using a pipe or rolling your own with natural tobacco.
I’ve watched this 10 years ago and now I’m here again 😂
27:56 Little Charles Dickens.
23:40 Elizabeth used lead white on her face and she racked up her 3 score and 10. 26:00 Why couldn't thew sew the ruffs?
10:40 Tony is adorable. 15:42 "Who needs friends when you have enemas"😅
The child harriers in the mines, the child door-pullers...!!!!
Instead of the knocker wp, why couldn't the factory just blow a whistle?
5:23 I'm sick!
RIP Kittys & Puppys… ☹️
Surprised they didnt bring up the Nuckelavee
Thank God Tony didn't have to deal with Zabusa and The Gato Corporation
It is amusing how many phrases we still use today came from this era. "Bite the bullet" and "Show you the ropes" are just 2 examples
Still here... Thanks my friend, so many years, watching WELL before all these new links came along. So many years... Thanks so much...
These series are the Tories wet dream.
“Manly” might be the best word in the English language.
Tony’s best series!!
Great stuff.Much thanks!
What is with these people from the past? Just put the cup mold on the ground and gently step on it don't hop up and down against your abdomen. Sheesh.
If I were in charge of the boats I would not use leggers. I would use a rope slightly longer than the tunnel and have a horse pull the boat through from the other end and use the boat to pull the empty rope through for the return trip. You would need two horses on each end. One to pull the boat the other to pull the next boat while the horse from the first boat walked the path back to the tunnel. Silly people.
Tony is the man
I agree
I think that being a "powder monkey" would be the absolute worst job on the ship. Imagine being an 11 year old boy and your job is to run across a ship that is literally blowing up around you as you carry powder to gunnery crews, and to top it off you didn't even earn a wage but a bit of food and a cot to sleep in.
The legger job is ridiculous! Why on earth didnt they just have a basic pulley and rope system attached to the ceiling of the tunnel! Hell, you could even lash a pulley rope up via a steam engine to tug each boat through. Seems absolutely bizarre that no thought to fix such a simple problem.
Lord, those poor kids in the coal mines!
The not so funny thing is many jobs similar to his whole series still exists. The interesting part is we still benefit in the wealthy Nations from them.
So why in the world would you wash your skin with caustic soda soap that smells like a dead animal??!
Sir Tony earned his pay on the ladder..Hats off !!
Tony Robinson as a fish wife LOL the best
At 44:56 he says Turkeys were brought to Europe by the Spanish but Spain obviously is already in Europe so how can they bring something to where it already is?
11:34 am i missing some obscure english slang or is the phrase not "Catch a lift"
"Cadge a lift" (or "cadge a smoke/fag" for a cigarette) is to get a spare or free lift from someone already going to the place (as in a ride without going out of the way.) Guess the cadge part has just been corrupted over time to mean "carry something extra."
A warning about cutting off live creatures heads should be given! I was nearly sick. All hell would break lose if that was a kitten! Disgusting!
Back in the late 60's, my brother and I would make our Christmas money plucking turkeys at a local farm for Thanksgivings and Christmases. I can tell you that the room was smelly and the work awful. Standing on a concrete floor for hours while your fingers became more sore than you could imagine, while the slaughtering of birds went on around you. Oh, and minimum wage was $1.65/hour back then. I'll let you do the math as to how much Christmas money we were able to make... Definitely one of the worst jobs I every had!
Ohhh Tony, I felt your trepidation on going over the cliff.
