I (Petri Rahja) will delve into the world of DAWs to explore how they function.
Welcome to my channel!
My channel will practically show how different Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) work when creating music. Main focus is on workflow and how to work with your DAW.
My primary go-to DAW is #ableton Live, and I am using the Suite version. After illustrating concepts like Side Chaining in Ableton Live, I will demonstrate how to achieve the same in #protools , #studioone , #logicprox , #reason , #cubase , and #universalaudio #Luna - these are the DAWs I currently have.
This will serve as a hands-on learning experience for me, as I am primarily use Ableton Live. I hope you will find it intriguing to observe the distinctions among the DAWs and perhaps discover one that best suits your preferences.
I trust you will enjoy this journey.
One more thing: The ultimate DAW is always the one you have and understand the most!

Finally upgraded from Reason 10 for $79 but had to buy Blue cat in the interim for vst3..
I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my questions.. I can't thank you enough, but unfortunately I'm still dealing with some rather perplexing issues within the framework of this software. To start, ive discovered that I'm able to trigger from the Maschine controller and record MIDI data into individual instrument tracks within protools by entering [MIDI Input Selector/Maschine MIDI Out/respective channels] you must also go to the Maschine plugin Channel/MIDI/Output/Destination = Host & select each respective channel. These settings allow for the recording of individual MIDI channels on instrument tracks.. BUT THERE IS NO PLAY BACK.. in order to get playback I was forced to go to the MIDI Output selector/Maschine MIDI In/respective channels, I also had to go into the Maschine plugin and to Channel/MIDI/Input/Destination = Host & select each respective channel, essentially reversing the process each time I want to record or playback... THERES GOT TO BE AN EASIER WAY AND I KNOW YOURE THE MAN TO TEACH US. basically.. how Can I both record and playback... its a rather simply function id assume.. I must be missing something here I suspect the same routing issue when I drag the MIDI into instrument tracks using the configuration shown in these tutorials.. but this is remedied by the same method by going to the MIDI Output selector/Maschine MIDI In/respective channels, and then going into the Maschine plugin and to Channel/MIDI/Input/Destination = Host & select each respective channel because of your videos ive learned a lot so I thank you for getting me this far.. if youre able to either respond to this comment, make a new video or even possibly getting a template/pro tools file to us id be extremely grateful... seriously, I can't thank you enough for getting me this far.. youre the man.. I'm going to share your channel
Hi nice video. I am trying to decide detention SSL and Softube. Would you mind telling me what the touchscreen is? Looks like you are using MetaGrid on iPad, does this also work well?
Hey, Thanks ! I have a lot of problems with Softube Console (Channel rebooting itself and fader not working for my workflow eventually) Touchscreen is this one webshop.asus.com/fi-fi/90LM04S0-B02170/ASUS-ZenScreen-Touch-MB16AMTR Needs a www.touch-base.com/ to work with Mac. MetaGrid is awesome, works extremely well and it is intregral part of my setup. Will plan to do dedicated videos on it.
Thanks
You are welcome !!
Lots of food for thought there. I have been looking for something that integrates well into Cubase and funnily enough I use loads of similar shortcuts to you, currently programmed into a very cheap Korg NanoKontrol 2. My main console is the Qcon Pro X which works well, has a superb transport section, but does not have anywhere near the programmability of the SSL. I've seen the Softube vids too and that it follows the channels if you click on the mixer (like my CC121), but perhaps the lack of other features is just not enough to make up for this one advantage. If only we could get true integration with Cubase onto a major Midi Controller! Anyway thanks for posting. Subscribed.
Hey, Thanks ! Indeed the only workflow related thing is the "follows the channels if you click on the mixer" however when selecting track from SSL UF8 it will focus to that in Cubase Mixer. However not the other way around. All other functionality is better with SSL UF8 IMO.
Have you looked at MPMidi, fast and functional, for cubase too now
Hey, I have indeed. Few times been on a fence to order it. You have experience on it ?
@ I‘m considering buying another 2, then I have one for Cubase control and one for plugin control, the third machine would be for integration with my Allen & Heath Avantis for live shows using it in conjunction with Gig Performer, the Cubase Integration is amazing workflow acceleration, only thing missing are faders under the screen
@@murraywebster1228 Awesome !
that was a really good tutorial but you seemed to of skipped over the most crucial detail concerning why people would search for this video, we need to know how to record signals straight from the Maschine pads... I followed all your directions and I still cannot record a live finger drumming performance... what am I missing here? id also like to know how to drag MIDI patterns from the Maschine interface into these respective channels you've created in this tutorial.. hope this isnt asking too much, I really need help over here
Thanks for the comment and questions ;) Here is the video explaining these two things. Happy Holidays <3. ua-cam.com/video/8xjNqKG8roA/v-deo.html
I get it has a lot it can control on the screen but it’s still no quicker than a mouse..
Hi, depends on the preference. I like to control this in more analog way with buttons and knobs. This make things faster for me and I do not need to use the mouse or keyboard so much. All is about personal preference and the workflow should be like whay is best for you.
Hi petri! Would love to see a full breakdown of your set up on the uf8 in Cubase. Which shortcuts/macros and different key switches. Love your workflow !
Thank you for the idea and heads up !! I will do that as I have a good project on my desk to showcase it.
Hey, here it is ua-cam.com/video/D7ZRgv1Pn8Y/v-deo.html
So the SHOCKING part is that the SSL UF8 pairs better with Softube Console 1 Channel than does Softube Console 1 Fader....for your workflow. A bit dramatic, but I actually really appreciate what you are showing in this video. (And it IS UA-cam. ) Q: Was there anything about C1F that you felt WAS actually better? I don't feel like you really compared the two so much as declared one better. And briefly said why but didn't really Show us both. Again though, I really like the video and agree that the focus should be on Workflow rather than name brand or hype. However, the bells & whistles that each bring to the table will resonate differently with different people. I hope you have more coming.
In all I feel that C1F from mechanics is pretty good and the haptic feedback is nice feature, however the integration with many DAWs still lack features compared to SSL UF8. Like in many DAWs it does not reflect to mix view so you see all the channels despite mix view shows only few. SSL UF8 is the opposite. Also C1F is only a fader when the SSL UF8 is a MIDI controller, and very versatile to program hot keys to make your workflow better. Those are the main diffs. IMO. As said we all are different and for some C1F might just do it. IMO best integration is with Logic Pro.
I wish they had instrument definitions like Sonar did. It made using external synths so easy.
Indeed, but the way Cubase has Ext Instruments is pretty good as well IMO
@@Howdoyoudaw Really? I will have to check that out. If it has something similar that would be compelling enough for me to switch to that as my main DAW. Thanks
Hi Mate, thank you for this clear video! I'm a Maschine owner for many years and for a shorter period a Ableton owner. Sinds than i'm trying to make a good workflow with the 2 but keep struggling. I'm gonna try this template but would also love to use my Maschine mk3 as one of the hardware tools within a live situation. I've downloaded the MackieControl but.. meh.. i'm not happy. Do you have any advices for me?
Hey, what version of Maschine you have. It does integrate with Ableton nicely and supports transport control. What type of control you look for for your live performance ?
@@Howdoyoudaw Maschine 2.18.4. Live 11 suite. Ive installed MackyControl for Ableton, now I can switch between the plugin and transport controls when press shift+channel, or is there a better way? My goal is to play with live with a pianist and other band members. I want to have various presets ready with a few premade loops with I alternate on the go. And when I feel more comfy, bring in more sounds all when live. The various presets should be for various songs we preform. Is it better to load Maschine with all song structures on a channel and play with all maschine stuff from there, and use other plug-ins with other hardware on other channels, or split the Maschine sounds onto various outputs and be restricted to 16 I do want to would from ableton as the rest of the band also use the Clock for in ears and other devices
@@djobed.utrecht You have Maschine mkII or mkIII ? So from Maschine you want to send MIDI CC commands to launch these clips?
Thanks for popping this up. Reminds me of how shockingly primative my own workflow is. Still waiting for the slim controller with great faders, real jog knob, transport controls, and programmable buttons with tight intergration to Nuendo 13/upcoming 14.
Thanks ! Yes SSL UF8 is not slim, but does work with Nuendo/Cubase. Combined with UF1 you would get jog knob as well.
yea i couldn’t wait for that so i got the MKIII CONSOLE AND 2 MKIII FADERS and the PRESONUS FADER PORT V2 for my TRANSPORT everything arrived yesterday so EARLY XMAS FOR ME ❤🎉😅
what your touch monitor is? looks convinient!

Great vid! Very helpful
Thank you :)
Is it shit?
Like said in the video Console 1 Fader is a great fader unit, but it is only that. SSL UF8 has more features that support making your workflow faster.
@@Howdoyoudawyea i couldn’t wait for that so i got the MKIII CONSOLE AND 2 MKIII FADERS and the PRESONUS FADER PORT V2 for my TRANSPORT everything arrived yesterday so EARLY XMAS FOR ME ❤🎉😅
Informative but not shocking in any way. Click bait title really.
Thanks , Well a bit heavy title yes, but a lot of buss has been on Console 1 fader, but not revealing th big difference of two.
The 'SHOCKING!!!!!!!!' Truth.....Hyperbole much?
A bit :)
Hey, you clicked.
i think its the only unboxing video of it, thank you. Camera angle could be better cause im here zooming in like a detective LOL
Thanks!! Yes still practicing with my vidoe skills :)
Yep!👍🏾 Exactly.
Thanks !
Have u tried " Surface Locking" to get the channel faders to work? u usually have to set that up for any Midi gear with faders to see/work correctly at the beginning. Choose Master Section... I'd also use the Console 1 on audio tracks rather than Midi channels. Bounce Midi to audio and focus on mixing stage, etc..
Hi, Yes I have and that works great with SSL UF8, but not with Softube Console 1 Fader mkIII. It works ok with Logic Pro, and Pro Tools as well as with Cubase 14. Not with Studio One, Luna or Ableton Live.
@@Howdoyoudaw Ive been struggling to find and purchase a solid piece that can control Reason at a good rate. I miss faders.. I had the Icon Pro X but got rid of it now I'm looking at the Icon V1M. I've searched for years and Icon is the only serious controller that actually has code and works (template) for Reason.
No Bitwig? :)
I have version 3.3.4 witch I could use to do it in Bitwig as well. Need to check if it runs on the current setup.
You don’t have to activate input monitoring 1 by 1. I’m not in front of my computer right now but I believe if you highlight all tracks and then option + shift click, it’ll do all selected tracks at once
Yes you can do that. Thank
Anyone have an Idea how to Fix my Pro tools midi Problem. My Midi Notes are offset about 1/16 to early. I have no Latency Problems i hear everthing in time. And i habe no quantisation on.and yes i am in timing
Have not encountered such error, Is it one track or all tracks with MIDI. Meaning could it be track related delay or adjustment ?
@Howdoyoudaw Thx for your answer.no it is not Track related. I suspect that it has something to do with my system becouse it is in the Maschine Software as well.
I have MC707 and don’t know you could separate out a single drum track to individual audio channels. I’ll be trying this out. Thank for the video.
Yes, you can get audio over USB for multiple channels. This is what I did with TR-8S.
Great Video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Disabling instruments in ableton does not unload them from RAM. It only disables their CPU usage.
Me too lol
Great !
Hi Petrie, I also use a Native Instruments S61. Because you are changing settings within Luna (changing to Core Audio from Appolo thunderbolt) will this affect my Keyboard in any way?
Hi Chris, Changing to Core Audio from Apollo thunderbolt will not effect S61 functionality in any way. Now LUNA added (version 1.7) multitimbral capability so you can use MASCHINE as plugin with all 16 channels mapped inside LUNA.
@@Howdoyoudaw OK, that's great. So enable the same setup from the video, but no need to run Maschine in standalone?
Thank you very much for this video!
Thank you! Great that you enjoyed.
This is not a new Trend,. this is common since 30 years,. Ableton Live was built around this concept (you said it,.. they were the first ,. maybe fruity loops too) ,. and you can hear this trend even in 90s (loopbased music),. in my bubble the trend goes away from this old shoes,..
Indeed, it is not a new tred in music, but it is a new trend in DAWs.Like Studio One just released 7 where they support this. Pro Tools in bringing the Sketch. Few years back Logic Pro introduced grid. Si in therms of DAWs it is kinda new :)
Great video Sir! I´m tempted to switch to Luna, but that having not a controller is holding me off. I have 2 streamdecks already, anyways, thank you so much and greetings from Mexico City
Thank you ! I also added now a story about Softube Console 1 & LUNA! Love Mexico ❤️ ua-cam.com/video/5Kx5UmiprhA/v-deo.html
you are using logic pro 11.01 not Logic Pro X !! X stands for 10 , otherwise thanks for the informative videos , i am getting this set up for Logic Pro next month ,
You are correct, I am using 11.01 :) Old habits die slowly and still Logic Pro is Logic Pro X for me as it has been that for the past 8 year until now ... heheh
Nice high level overview. Thanks!
Thanks !!
Would love to see direct integration in Ableton as well. I‘m bit worried that the Console 1 Plugin in front of every Instrument chain can mess up things especially when you work with External Instrument Device in Ableton and have complex Instrument chains….
What I have seen it is pretty light weight, but agree with the worry and have had couple of crashes with the Softube display overlays software. Here is a longer video on Ableton and Console 1 integrations. ua-cam.com/video/w7qmaLxp7cQ/v-deo.html
Keep pushing! 😊
This is exactly the tutorial I've been searching for. Thanks for posting this video!
Thank you! Great it is helpful.
What is it what your are running on your iPad?
Hi, it is Metagrid Pro metasystem.io/ Highly recommending it, I like it a lot more than Streamdeck. (If you meant the app with control buttons)
How do you find to keep it on the side not in front of the monitor ? Would like to hear more of your experiences with the device in near future! Thanks!
For optimal listening position I like to sit straigh towards the desk so that the stereo image is the best and you hear Middle/Side sounds better as well as Left and Right. This why I would not place it on side. But that just me. I started it with having it on the left but did not feel it being great.
@@Howdoyoudaw Doesn't it depend on the listing position and height ? The triangle between speakers and the listener has to be without any impedent. That's also a reason why I don't put a monitor on any side. Can't speak from a practical standpoint as I haven't tried the both devices yet. I am curious about the height of the rack unit for Softube devices.
I actually meant putting it on the studio desk on the left/right side of the keyboard. In all the reviews and trailers they use the device in front of the monitor. I am not sure if it's necessary.
It does depend, in my case my listening position is in the middle of my desk and also the moniror is back enough not to disturb the sound coming straight. The height of that stand is 24 cm. I tested it to have on side og keyboard and flat on desk. Ergonimically feel this what I have is best for me.
Do you have the sub 37 done please
I do not own sub 37, but is follows the same logic as any other synth when using external synth.
Thanks for the video! I got what I want to know. I'm wondering if I would come back to Reason from Logic Pro... Because Reason makes me feel like being in a real studio...
Great ! Thanks for the heads up. I have been working mainly in Ableton, but tempted to do a project in Reason. The new improvements and instruments make it pretty good and as you say it is close to analog world with it's workflow and approach.
So, what I'm getting from this is, I have to setup 16 different AUX if I have a 16 part multitimbral synth?
Yes 16 stero aux if you have 16 stereo out from multitimbral synth. In case they are mono the 16 mono aux for 16 mono out from multitimbral synth
@@Howdoyoudaw So, USB won't accomplish this? The reason I'm asking is I wanted to use the internal sounds of my Roland DS and control them through the DAW.
@@pctshooter Does the Roland Juno-DS audio over USB have 16 audio channels in ? What I do with my synt is that I record the sound one at the time as external synths do not have more that 2 or 3 multitibral capabilities. DS manual says it has 16 parts.
@@Howdoyoudaw it does have 16 parts and it has a built-in audio interface.
@@pctshooter Thenk you need to map all audio in in the Studio One Audio configuration to get all in.
Yes, hope Luna will get multi outputs and ARA 2 support. Best/Mathias
