Exactly a year ago, Casey told her best friend that she had feelings for him. She felt this way for ages but couldn’t gather up the courage to say something until prom night. By then, it was too late. She didn’t know it then, but this was the last time they were going to be together like this - at the end of a moment in their lives when having a crush or failing a class felt like the biggest thing in the world. She most clearly remembered the look in his eyes - a barrier barely holding back holding back the storm of words and emotions he so desperately wanted to let out but just couldn’t say it. He scanned her eyes, hoping she could somehow read his mind and free him of the burden of piecing words together to say what he really meant. In the end, he uttered the two words that would echo in Casey’s mind for nights on end. “I can’t.” Not long after Casey’s confession, Chris became another face on those missing posters. There was an increase in disappearances that year, along with sightings of monsters bathed in black smoke. No bodies were found, and no one was found alive either. Something changed in the air. It didn’t happen all at once but gradually, like a cancer silently spreading. Maybe it started with the incident that happened later that night after prom. Or when the monsters began appearing. No one really knows. We just know somewhere along the way, things went terribly terribly wrong.
