Brailsford Woodworks

Приєднався 16 січ 2020
My passion for woodworking started when I was a small boy. My father did limited woodworking projects for the house I grew up in. Whenever he would go to buy lumber I would love to tag along because I loved the smell and feel of a lumber store.
When I got married and moved out I purchased my first major tool, a Craftsman contractor table saw. Thirty three years later I am a self taught woodworker who's projects range from billiard tables to turned bowls.
I moved into my forever home in rural North Carolina in 2018. I had the long leaf and loblolly pines milled into beams and I hand crafted my own timber framed work shop. It is my dream shop and I now have the space and opportunity to expand my craft.
My passion is now wood turning and making end grain cutting boards. Please join me in my wood working journey.

woodturning punky maple wood. I take three rough Maple bowls that had some punky areas on them, and save them using a mixture of table top epoxy and acetone to make penetrating epoxy. This mixture soaked down into the wood and hardened up the punky areas so I was able to turn it. I end up with three premium bowls with beautiful figure. I will be able to retail these bowls for a total of $250. #...

Nice project. How long have you had the AB? I hope to have mine in about a week.
Penn State Industries, 12" variable Great Lathe, great value. Check them out.
I will check it out. Thanks for watching!
what brand is the sliding table on your table saw? nice build!
The sliding table is made by Grizzly. It is no longer available. Which stinks because the locking mechanism broke and I can't get parts for it. Thanks for the kind words and for watching!
a production turner uses one of the 10x18 HF lathes at a Chrismas market here in PA. But with a cup chuck and no tail stock. any lathe that can take the abuse of using a cup chuck is no slouch.
Due to health reasons last year, I have not been able to use it yet at a show. I have taken it with me when I have gone camping and I like being able to do that! Thanks for watching!
👋👋👋👋
Thank you so much!
Outstanding!
Thank you Norm! I am working on the rest of it!
Great bench, you will enjoy using this.
This is going to be a fantastic work bench. You’re doing a great job building it.
Thank you Doug! I am enjoying this project!
Incredible video brother. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. Keep the content coming. Hope you have an incredible weekend. Much love and RESPECT
Thank you Tim!
Sweet build!! A Benchcrafted tail vise is on my bucket list, but my current bench has an Emmert vise and I'd hate to lose that-- so I'll need to modify whatever I build to accommodate both vise types.
Thank you! I am sure you could add it to the other side! I see why you don't want to lose it!
Not sure where you’re located out of, but there’s a guy in middle Tennessee, who is a old-fashioned tree logger. He comes across nice burls and looking for a buyer. His handle is Down The Trail Logger
Did you mean burl not barrel? I will go on the assumption you did... I will look him up!
@@BrailsfordWoodworksyes sorry. And his UA-cam channel is actually called @downthetraillogging. Hes in Middle Tennessee
What is Pentecast?
Pentacryl! It is a wood preservative that helps dry wood without cracking. Thanks for watching Richard!
Man that’s ALOT of shavings! What do you do with them?
During the winter I use them to help heat my shop! I put them in my wood stove! Thanks for watching!
Nibble away at the sweet gum! Yum!
Hmmmmm, sweet gum sounds tasty! 🤤 Dang this new year’s diet is getting to me! 😮
I heard years ago that people would take balls of sap and eat them like chewing gum. I have never done it myself and would not recommend it without more research. Thanks for watching!
@@BrailsfordWoodworks no, I’d like to see a video of you doing that!
@@WoodWithD I'm good, thanks.
Serious Grit 3.5 paper is excellent and priced well
I may check it out. Klingspor is my go to paper. Thanks for watching!
Nice video. I am going to purchase one.
I use mine a lot. I suggest the carbide cutters. Thanks for watching!
Are you moving slow or is it cutting that slow? Don’t back up while mid cut, it’ll throw the blade. Adjust the guide arm closer to the material when cutting smaller items like this, because it helps the blade from drifting and making wavy cuts.
Yea I have learned some of these lessons the hard way. Thanks for watching!
So, you want a world class product but don’t want to pay for it? Comparing Bosh / Dewalt / Mikita to Festool is like comparing a Kia to a BMW, show a lack of understanding about the tools and basic quality / performance bands. I own the 90 and all the other brands. The 90 is vastly superior on any measure including price performance.
I know tools just fine. If you are pleased with your purchases, then I am happy for you.
Thank you for the detailed build process for nice looking hope chest. I'm still working on getting my dove tails better looking. I know it's been a couple years, but do you remember what the clear coat you put on it was?
I use a wipe on semi gloss polyurethane. I make my own by thinning down regular strength with mineral spirits. I have several chest videos. They all may provide some guidance. Thanks for watching!
Hi Doug, Not sure what the Pentacryl is but do you only coat the inside of the bowl ?
I apply it to the whole bowl
Demos at shows? Back in the '90's I took a Sakura scroll saw to a show during the holidays. I cut 4 2-3" ornaments from varied woods, using patterns I cadged from a book by Patrick Speilman. This setup was in the center of the main aisle at the local mall, so open all 4 sides. By the 3d hour, my backstock had sold out...150 units @ $2ea. There was a line forming, waiting for ornaments. I began to stack saw 3 at a time to reduce the congestion around the booth. By mid-afternoon I was out of blades, out of wood and anxious about day 2. The mall mgr came up, looked around and smiled. "Well done, son. You wanna move to an empty storefront and set up thru the holidays?" He had also invited several crafters to take up 'residence' in that empty store and for four weeks we all just kicked butt. Went back three more years until the mall changed ownership.
That sounds like an amazing experience! Unfortunately for me, I was forced to cancel the majority of my shows for this year due to a heart attack. So I still haven't had the opportunity to try it out. It will have to be the right show for sure. I can't have my stuff flinging debris on my neighbors product. Thanks for watching!
I agree with all the steps you’re taking except the Pentacryl. I was taught in the early days that it gives the wood a green cast. Is that your experience? If not, maybe I should give it a try. Boiling green wood has always given me the results I hoped for, but the Pentacryl may be an added step I need to include.
Hey Doug! No I haven't had that happen using Pentacryl. I have had pretty good luck with it. Mind you, it is expensive stuff, but I figure when amortized through several dozen bowls it will pay out in the end. Thanks for watching!
Incredible video brother. Thanks for sharing. Keep the content coming. Hope you have an incredible weekend. Much love and RESPECT
Thank you Tim! I hope you are enjoying your holidays!
Thank you. Great video and channel. What is the purpose of the boiling?
Thank you Michael! Boiling softens the lignin in the wood and allows the bound water in the cells to escape more freely. You will have better luck against cracking that way. Thanks for watching!
Hi Mike, there is a company called “serious grit” that sells 3 1/2” paper. I just ordered some last night for 2 other festool sanders. I just checked the 3.5” availability. It’s on Amazon . Disclaimer- I HAVE NOT TRIED IT YET , but it’s far less expensive and I figured worth a shot. That is a sweet lathe amigo, I’ll be checking out your other videos (What brand and model?) Thanks!
I may look into it! The paper I buy for it, in general ( I use Klingspor paper), isn't my hang up with the sander. It is the overall price for the tool and the insane price of the velcro "interface" pad. I have gone to buying larger ones and making my own. It is way cheaper that way. When I took my lesson with Glen Lucas, he showed me a different way to sand my turning that does not use my Festool sander. It has been faster and I get better results. I do use that sander for other sanding that I do that is not turned pieces. Thanks for watching!
How far do you usually go out without a steady rest? I always worry about long pieces coming off the lathe.
Hey Michael! With that tiny vase it wasn't an issue at all. However, the rule of thumb is 3-4 times the diameter of the vessel is when you should add a steady rest. Erring on the side of caution does not hurt either. Thanks for watching!
Your replies seem to be absent! Beautiful work. Greetings from Ireland 🍀
Hey Sean! I must be missing something? I try to reply to everything. What have I missed? Thank you and Happy Holidays from North Carolina USA!
@BrailsfordWoodworks It's a fault with YT, not you. A comment would have "6replies" for example including your own but when I click in.... nothing!
Thanks for saving the wood and making something beautiful. I’m sure the house where it came from was beautiful too in its day!❤
I actually love making stuff from wood that would be otherwise discarded! Thank you and Happy Holidays!
Looks great What’s the guitar tune called ??
Thank you Joey! The song I purchased the rights for from a music service. Not sure what it is called. Sorry. Thanks for watching!
I love that tune !!
It is quite catchy! Thanks again for watching!

Thank you Tim! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Very nice looking
Thank you Ray!
Great work. I don’t know how you can possibly make pine look any better. An absolutely beautiful bowl. This is a top shelf, top dollar piece for sure.
Thank you Doug! After I sold my signature piece Cherry Burl and epoxy bowl, I have needed a new signature piece. Something to bring people into the booth. I hope this will do the job. Thanks again Doug and Merry Christmas to you and your family!
@ I did the same thing, a 19 1/2” oak platter. I’ve been hoping somebody would give the silly money I’m asking for it. Kind of want to turn another big’un.
Going to do the same to my 14BX. Wish they weren’t so pricey. Thanks
I think it was worth doing! I have always struggled with keeping my bandsaws tuned. This will help I think. Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas!
Do you flatten your rings?
Yes. I run them through my drum sander. The full video for this comes out tomorrow. It has far more detail. Thanks for watching!
The technical skills to make this are impressive, however I think that some more time spent on design would have produced a more aesthetically pleasing effect.
Thanks. I will say that while I am not displeased with the design, the real test will come when I try to sell it. One thing I am sure about is that some, like you, won't care for it, and others will love it, while still others won't have much of an opinion either way. My test will be if I can put the bowl in front of the right person at the right time, with the right money. Thanks for watching!
Maybe OP just wanted to make something he liked and not something you like
What type of paste wax and the brand
I use Minwax Paste Finishing Wax. www.amazon.com/Minwax-785004444-Finishing-1-Pound-Natural/dp/B000LNOZAW/ref=sr_1_3?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.8EMfXIalodExHed_q84kimrJAOxxlDjuKzBYGQB9v8XZYs_7AfHovqAWRRzOIiJBRZflLLc6CghcgrPW-UazZve6KgSH83bpGJBrhotX1SUhBDclFAYZgjxArt7_9TZYS9Pl1D5S4qrTiePO5ci3PD9xKsBP6b-Lcri8ieAevrHlTWR-d3whemTGLOX72DRliCbY2ZAldCcknKMwtd7tC5M3SDwRff8jnuZIidu8rtU.LCIi1CDHv8i_7YCPJexzhUp_wuBH3OvsFd8-qyMnCoY&dib_tag=se&hvadid=630951139829&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9009728&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=1594959515039433758&hvtargid=kwd-1577832071&hydadcr=24628_13626603&keywords=minwax+paste+finishing+wax&qid=1734693758&sr=8-3 Thanks for watching!
Hated tool boxes until I began to use Festool. Systainers are excellent - tools plus all accessories always available and instantly visible across the room, with the inserts keeping everything organised and stopping them rattling about. £10 for an insert and it's instantly usable - compare that to A. N. Other (inclusing Milwaukee) plus the price of a foam insert plus the cutting in process...Systainer all day long for me.
So, I can see where some might like them. For me, however, I don't take my tools anywhere, and I have cabinets for them and really can spare the real estate in my shop to accommodate yet more tool storage. Thanks for watching!
The Festool products last for decades. They stand behind them and the precision is amazing. They are stupid expensive and cost way too much. But you will find those who make a serious living in wood buy them once. I have spent twice as much in thirty years than I ever have on Festool. It’s because I have bought it three times in other brands. So again I agree expensive but worth it.
I have said that as far as quality goes, my RO90 is nice. I do like it. However, no one will ever convince me that they are appreciably better than Makita, Bosch, Milwaukee. Even if you can make the argument that they are better than those brands, you also could never convince me that they are twice as good as they are (that being the amount they usually cost more than those brands). Just my opinion. Thanks for watching!
Nice work. I like the pine. For fun you should try glueing up some old pine skid boards. Makes funky bowls.
I am about to do that! I have a video posting this weekend of a very large segmented bowl I have made from very old southern yellow pine recycled from an early 1900's farm house that was torn down. Keep an eye out! Thanks for watching!
I'm sure you'll learn how to make it if you'll read WoodPrix instructions from cover to cover :)
I have no idea what that is.
Nice build, much simpler than most. I agree on placement of templates - small end toward blade. Where did you get the set of segment templates? I have a few and would like to get more.
Thanks! Yea, I didn't think about the placement. I am glad people with experience clued me in! I bought them on Amazon. Thanks for watching!
No love for the minibike :(
Well it does fine for me to run around my property... slowly. I am not a motorcycle guy. Thanks for watching
Awesome video brother. Thanks for sharing. Keep the content coming. Nice sled. Hope you have a Merry Christmas if i don't get a chance to tell you. Much love and RESPECT
Thank you Tim! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Great project making the sled. One suggestion for you. I’ve never seen anyone use a wedgie sled with the big end facing the blade before, always the small end. Set up your sled this way and your board width problem should go away. Well done.
Well... Don't I feel like a dope! Thanks Doug!
Amen to the crimes that DeWalt/Stanley/Black&Decker did to the Porter Cable line of tools. I am the proud owner of nothing yellow-- no thanks on anything labeled DeWilt. And, great build on the wedgie sled. PLEASE ... Take a few minutes to build a dedicated throat plate with a glued-on ramp to divert your cut-off segments away from the blade. Hitting the spinning blade with that pusher stick can create a really BAD day..... The ramp will divert pieces away from the blade as soon as they're cut off.
That is great advice! I will do it! Thanks for watching!
Hey, I'm curious to know how heavy the powerhead assembly is? Is there assemble involved with that as well or what?
As for the power head, not sure of the exact weight, but I did have to place it on the track with my tractor. Mine is elevated to that added a complication for lifting. If you had it at ground level It would certainly be easier. There is some assembly required. You have to run the lift cable and attach the push bar and mount the throttle and water valve.
Great video, Mike. This will be my next venture in to wood turning. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you David! I am glad you enjoyed it!
