Peppermint oil as skunk and raccoon repellent
Peppermint oil was tested as a mammal repellant in southwest Wisconsin, 2023. It was found to be ineffective in an outdoor setting against raccoons and skunks, as both of these mammals repeatedly came into direct contact with an oil-treated experimental set-up (approximately 15 mls of oil) over the course of several days. These results suggest that citrus oils are not likely to be of much value in keeping mid-sized mammalian predators away from areas in the field, including those targeted for conservation purposes.

Sarcophagid flies larvaepositing en masse above Ouachita Map turtle nest
Переглядів 314 роки тому
Sarcophagid flies (flesh flies) have eggs which develop within the female fly. The first instar larvae are then deposited directly onto food or on the ground over buried food which they reach by burrowing down into the substrate. This video shows several aggregated flies larvaepositing over a Ouachita Map Turtle (Graptemys ouachitensis) nest in southwest Wisconsin on 12 September 2016. The larv...
Larvaeposition by Sarcophagid fly 20 August 2016

Flies in the family Sarcophagidae (flesh flies) have eggs which hatch within the female. The first instar larvae are subsequently deposited directly onto or above a buried food source. In this case, the larvae (small, light-colored bodies appearing at 6:30-6:33 PM) are deposited above a Ouachita Map turtle (Graptemys ouachitensis) nest in southwest Wisconsin. Images obtained with a trail camera...

3-foot snake nocturnal activity 19 through 21 June 2007
Переглядів 12011 років тому
These photos of nocturnal snake activity were taken during an unrelated pilot study in Wisconsin involving the use of electric fences, and were taken by chance. While it is difficult to be certain, the size of these individuals suggests they may be fox snakes (Pantherophis vulpina), which occur in the area. The interesting thing is the recurring visits of what may be the same individuals to the...

These photos of nocturnal snake activity were taken during an unrelated pilot study in Wisconsin involving the use of electric fences, and were taken by chance. While it is difficult to be certain, the size of the smaller individuals suggests they may be fox snakes (Pantherophis vulpina) and the larger ones, bullsnakes (Pituophis catenifer sayi). The interesting thing is the recurring visits to...
