Im under the impression that you cannot apply for these sort of teams directly? Is that correct? Im separating from active duty very military soon and looking at the different options I have. If anyone knows, thanks.
Yes, you will have to go through the basic academy, do FTO and I believe for GRPD you have to work patrol for 2 years before you tryout for SRT.
I have yet to hear of a department that this is not the case. And once you work the road, you'll understand why. You really do need that basic patrol experience for any specialized LE role. It's the foundation so to speak.

Do research on the Department, population of the departments jurisdiction, what divisions are within the department. Know who the chief/sheriff and high ranking administration are. When an oral board asks this question, it is to see how prepared you are for the interview and to see if you are knowledgeable about the department you’re interviewing for.

How long do police departments take to review your application?
Ive put in applications at three different departments, In the past few months, I got call backs to do interviews a week and two weeks later. Their hurting bad for good officers
