You're mileage may vary 😂 there are several different types of mounts for vehicles available.
*_CAUTION: COUNTERFEIT BL-5L Battery Packs Labeled BaoFeng_* *_Deliver only about 2600mAh...NOT 3800mAh_* If we got the original 1800mAh BL-5 battery pack with the radio, that's 1200mAh we paid for but we didn't get. Some 3800mAh BL-5L units *_really use 2600mAh cells_* while the BL-5L is still LABELED 3800mAh. We are being cheated and I'm sure the manufacturer is more than happy to pocket that extra profit at our expense. *_I purchased this battery pack from a VERY well known and high-rated Seller_* From my own notes when I took the unit apart. I finally opened up one of the BL-5L packs using a modified sharpened micro-screwdriver to pry along case edges. STARTING the separation was difficult. Have to keep one screwdriver levering the opening as you move it along with the other screwdriver. RESULTS: 1) I found a protection circuit inside the pack. (which is good) 2) 2600mAh REAL CAPACITY CONFIRMED. (which is BAD BAD BAD) Each of the 2 in series LiPo cells inside the BL-5L case had "2600mAh" printed on the cell envelope, and I assume this is the capacity. The TESTED 65% of the CLAIMED 3800mAh capacity above, coincides almost exactly with the "2600mAh" printed on each LiPo cell's envelope. I trust what is printed on the actual LiPo cell...not what is printed on the outside case of the BL-5L. Printed on each LiPo cell's envelope is: SR50431D0P2600mAh R3231 19C21 The "2600mAh" at the end of the top line is consistent with the battery pack's capacity test results I ran. In my opinion, it is VERY unlikely the manufacturer does not know the REAL capacity is 2600mAh...and NOT the 3800mAh being claimed on the product webpage. 2600mAh LiPo cells are CHEAPER than 3800mAh cells, so the manufacturer makes more money with each pack sold, and we do NOT get our money's worth. Instead of getting an extra 3800-1800mAh=2000mAh, we get only an extra 800mAh (2600-1800mAh). That''s 1200mAh we didn't get. ================================= NEW INFORMATION: I searched for a long time and could not find a single lithium-poly cell from any manufacturer where 2x 3800mAh LiPo cells could fit in the space provided in the BL-5L case. Also, The "50431D" printed on the cells I found in the BL-5L case (see earlier in comment) almost certainly refers to the cell's physical size as I found other 2600mAh prismatic LiPo cells in various catalogs with spec'd dimensions of 5mmD x 43mmW x 100mmL in size. This battery case form factor is also a tight fit for the 2 required 3.7VDCnom cells to provide 7.4VDCnom prismatic cells. Thus, any two 3800mAh cells, ALL those I could find from many manufacturing sources, were *_significantly_* larger than the 2600mAh cells I found in my BL-5L case, and the 3800mAh cells would fail to even come close to fitting in this battery case. *_You should consider what that suggests_*
*_Performance of BL-5 3800mAh battery packs_* 04:00 the "BL-5" 3800mAh battery packs I've purchased over multiple years have for the vast majority of all the BL-5 packs I've purchased...FAILED to provide anywhere near the 3800mAh capacity they claimed. Apparently, there are quite a few counterfeit sources out there for this pack. Some people report taking them apart and finding waste metal parts, rocks, and/or sand inside the packs to make them weigh the "correct" amount as the real battery pack. The 1 BL-5 I took apart did not have such weight gimmicks...it just used UNDER-RATED LiPo packs. I believe someone KNOWINGLY installs low-capacity 2600mAh LiPo cells into BL-5 units labeled as 3800mAh. A rare few BL-5 units I bought over the years tested somewhat closer to 3800mAh but none actually achieved it. See my next comment titled: "CAUTION: COUNTERFEIT BL-5 Battery Packs Labeled BaoFeng" A large percentage of the "BaoFeng BL-5" battery packs I tested came in at about 2600mAh. *_That's 1200mAh less than their product pages and their labels claim!_* The "best" performance I recorded in any of my tests was something like 3200mAh (going by memory on that one, and still considerably lower mAh performance than the label shows.) Test Parameters using an iMaxB6ACv2 tester, which I have verified is calibrated to an accuracy sufficient for hobby work. It also has a history of accurately measuring performance of quite a number of known high quality Li-Ion cells. So I'm completely satisfied with the results. (Test Parms: Id=20% of Spec'd Capacity=0.2x3800=760mA; Vt=6.0V (remember that it's 2 cells in series to get the 7.2Vnom for the pack)) 20% is an industry standard discharge test level, the termination voltage comes from Phil Souza (miklor website) 5.91 recommended termination voltage. (Common specs for a modern Li-ion/Li-Poly cell would yield a lower Vt, but I and others have found the mAh difference between Vt=5.8V (2x2.8V) and 6.0V (2x3.0V) is insignificant, and Vt=6.0V is less stressful to the cells.)
Sounds like some good detective work! I can say for sure emy battery lasts much longer than my original one. Not a fan of buying counterfeit stuff, but without ruining my batteries to test, I'm just happy that it lasts as long as they do! And mine is a BTECH, so maybe it's less counterfeit as often as a Baofeng.
Go to a hardware store and fill that antenna adapter gap with a rubber grommet or O-ring
Concerning programming cables. Make sure the cable has an FTDI chip set. Windows, Linux and Mac OS come out of the box with the necessary driver. Cheaper calbles use the profilific chipset. They cause comapability issues. Spend a few extra bucks on a quality FTDI cable.
Yes, those prolific cables are horrible. I personally like using my digirig as a programming cable! But that's if you have one :) The FTDI cable is just as good.

Great video. Tons of useful information and explained well.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Pretty good list for any HT you might have.👍I have a few tips to add. 1:30 I went with BNC adapters for all my handheld radios that didn't already have one. It makes switching antennas quicker, and saves wear on the threads. If you go this route, be sure to use the ones that sit flush with the radio housing, the other types put a lot of stress on the antenna jack and also look odd. 5:55 I have a couple of those mics, transmit audio was terrible, not worth the $7 I paid for the pair. The Pryme observer series are a nice low cost speaker mic. 5:02 The AA cases are nice. A common issue with them is the upper middle battery contact can slide out and short to the positive contact for the radio. A couple drops of CA glue and accelerator has kept mine from shorting again.
Sounds like you've used a lot of these accessories! I've heard a lot of people brag about the BNC adapters and purchased me a few to try out. It does look like it is way simpler to change things out without having to twist the radio or antenna over and over. When hooking up to a truck antenna it's annoying having a twist the radio so many times. So I think the BNC will be a nice addition!
Thanks for the info. Good stuff!
Glad you liked it!
@@HamRadioBytes I’m going to subscribe so please keep it coming!
Great video. I have many of these accessories and agree with your recommendations! The challenge is to know how much to bother upgrading the Baofeng UV-5R, or save up for another radio with other features (e.g. 220 MHz, waterproof, GPS, etc). The good thing is some of the accessories can be used on other radios. As for antennas - I suggest using BNC connectors on all radios and then you can buy BNC antennas that can be easily swapped vs worrying about male of female connections.
Yes great points! At a point, it will be better to upgrade radios, but this video is focused more on bettering the radio you have now to get more use out of it. I'm always for buying a good icom or Kenwood instead!
One accessory I reccomend is USB-C PD 12v plugg. Then you can use cradle chargers that uses 12v adapter. I use that for my Yaesu VX-8DR and Yaesu FT-65. So I can use USB-C chargers that can deliver 12v. There is also 5v to 12v USB-A converter if you go that way.
Great tip! That sounds like a good multi-use accessory!
I have been watching UA-cam about this and I’m interested for the prepping communication aspects. I live in the Florida panhandle. Which radios and information would you suggest for someone brand new to this? Thanks for your UA-cam channel, it is really helpful, but I’m still lost!
Great to hear it! The UA-cam channel Ham Radio Crash Course has some really great learning content. Also check out HamRadioPrep.com. That is how I got started and got licensed.
Will those channels suggest what radio equipment to purchase and where is best to purchase from?
Possibly. But just purchasing won't get you prepared. Your much better off starting small into the hobby and working your way into preparing. Most people's first radio is a Baofeng UV-5R.
Ok thanks, just didn’t want to start off on the wrong track if possible. Have you found any books useful or will I be better off watching UA-cam?
I'm a new ham and the owner of the uv5rx3 and the uv17r gps. Yea I have a couple yaesu and icom dual band for mobile and base, but messing around with the fengs is fun. The look on the old guys face the day I took my test when he saw the uv5rx3 was of disgust. I simply asked him to explain the pl tone to me and he said, " you're going to use THAT, those things are junk". Once I got my call sign I made it a point to check into the net with that radio and asked him if I was coming thru clear enough.
That's too funny! I also would prefer to have a few $1k radios on hand,, but I am a believer in starting small and working your way up! Baofengs are in fact made cheaply, but there are still plenty of use for them in both starting out, prepping, and playing around!
@ the icom and yaesu were my grandpas. I found them when we were cleaning out his house. That's what made me want to get my license.
Neat! Even old equipment is still so very useful. It's a good way to connect and remember him by no doubt. The CB radio behind me in my videos was my grandpa's he used when I was younger.
Cool roundup!
@@enriquediaz7547 thank you! There is a lot more out there too. This was just a start!

Didn't have a BF joint but still washed to watch. I've started a new comms channel and I'm always broadening my horizons
It may not be as slick as a Steve Jobs keynote but you did a heck of job demonstrating why someone 'needs' one of these affordable radios. The only thing I would add is a reminder about the emergency use exemption to the license rules. As we're seeing in post-Helene NC, such emergencies may be encountered multiple times in a day over a span of weeks. However, the radio isn't going to be of much use if the owner doesn't already know how to use it, and it's amazing how much one can learn without ever touching the talk button.
@@fondy44 wow! I appreciate the positive comment! It's harder to film one of these than you think! And very good points too. Thanks for watching!
Great info. Thanks a lot
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
The APRS-k1 would probably work with the Digirig Lite then? Did you have any RF interference issues with the APRS-k1 Pro? I have an AIOC and have RF issues causing me to use multiple ferrite beads and coaxial and audio extension cables. Thanks for the video.
Yes tons of interference! Not sure about the lite, but I do know the digirig mobile pin out is different and the K1 cable does not work with it. Glad you liked the video!
Just brought 2 baofeng radios from eBay ... Excellent value for money 💰 range is very good too I've got a pair of Motorola 2 way radios no where near as good as the baofeng radios uv5r baofeng gets my vote 👍
@@HamRadioBytes Digirig products have ferrite filters in their cables. Thanks for that K1 pin out confirmation.
topman" CHEERS,
In your option 2, Diamond SRH 519 you use a SMA female to female adapter. If you over tighten the antenna it can easily push through the center pin of the small SMA adapter something to be aware of.
@@ianthomsonGM0URD thank you! That's a really good point!
Just found you via your video on things to do with & subscribed. Some/much of what you say is still above my head but can learn. Videos well done.
It use to be above my head too, but as you play around and study you will learn! The good part is, you can start wherever you want and end wherever you want! Ham radio is all about what YOU want to use it for!
This was excellent! Oh, how I wish someone would do the same video, but for a Baofeng-uv-5g-plus! I'd be forever grateful!
Thank you! Ahh - a GMRS radio. I don't really know much about GMRS, so I am really not much help - sorry! I don't think there is many things you can do with GMRS since the FCC has put many more restrictions on it because its purpose is much different than amateur radio. But again, I know very little about it. There is a thriving community for it though, so maybe there is someone out there that can help!
If your police and public service agencies go digital and you can not hear them, AND they cannot hear you
Emergency services should never hear you directly on the radio :) the idea is you get a message out to a ham radio operator on a repeater and someone with phone service relay your message to the public service agencies. I'm pretty sure attempting to talk on emergency services freqs is outside the scope of part 97 exemption of emergency status, but I'm not a lawyer, I could be wrong.
Hola. Saludos estimado
Thanks for the info. I don’t have a license for anything yet so in learning and listening mode right now. Got curious because I’ve met several ham radio people while servicing their garage doors and there’s a guy with at least 4 large antennas I can see from my back yard. I think I’m picking up Walmart and some apartment maintenance and security on GMRS frequencies. Have listened to a local net or club check in. I’ve been leaving my radio on scan mode when home.
That's how the hobby always starts!! Another fun thing to try is a cheap SDR USB dongle from Amazon (SDR = Software Defined Radio). You can actually see the air waves! It's receive only, so no license needed!
Also, I'm about to put out a video on how to study and get licensed! There are tons of great resources when your ready!
