      Hello and thank you for your great question! Generally, this group of plants can't be pushed to grow faster or bigger. They have a slow-growing journey. But with a little bit of attention and good environment, water, fertilizer, etc., they can grow slightly larger and faster than the average pace. But generally, it's difficult. I don't think trimming the vine/leaves will make much of a difference in the size of the caudex. How big is the caudex on your plant so I can better assess the right size of the pot?

      @cactusandsucculentexchange 17 днів тому

      Hello and thank you for your excellent question! You should never bareroot an Operculicarya in order to repot it. It will damage the plant. Simply transplant it from one pot to another. Where are you located? The reason I ask is because the climate of one's location could impact the process of repotting. Hello Dr. Dorstenia!! Another great video with good information about this succulent. At the moment I have three varieties, the elata, foetida and gigas. I recently adquired the gigas that I was looking for so long at a reasonable price. I have a few questions for you if you dont mind answering please. I repotted my Elata about 6 months ago, from a too big pot to a smaller one. She is indoors, close to a south facing window, water every week. I dont know why she has not recuperated as soon as I thought. Most of her leaves are still droopy. However, this morning I saw a new big leaf standing up straight and very healthy. I think she is about to feel better! I found this plant in a plant swap and the lady just give it to me because she didn't find it attractive. I came home and I saw that the Elata is not very common and not too many people know about her. Lucky me! Any advice to manage a better repot next time? Thanks for your informative videos.

    • @cactusandsucculentexchange
      @cactusandsucculentexchange 21 день тому

      Hello friend and greetings! I can provide you with a detailed analysis to your very good question. First, watering once a week for any succulent that is indoors is in excess of what they typically desire. I am more comfortable if you reduce the frequency of watering to every 2 weeks, especially as we head into fall and winter. Second, the area in which you have placed this Dorstenia should have good air circulation. Is yours in such an environment? Third, your soil should be very porous which means it should be comprised of peat moss, perlite and, if you desire, small grade pumice (#2). Fourth, the pot should have a good sized hole for drainage. I recommend that you change the soil and convert it to the formula that I mentioned in item 3 above. In the meantime, before you apply the soil in the pot, a half inch on the bottom of the pot should have crushed brick comprised of substantial pieces (not too soft). They call it 5/8 or you can use volcanic lava rock, red or black - either works. Add some peat moss on top of the rocks. Then apply the soil and place the plant in it. This will give the plant a very strong drainage system. Then, when you water the plant, the water will travel through the pot but it won't remain in the soil. As a result, the soil will dry out quickly which is desirable. Since we are nearing the month of September, you should transplant it quickly and leave it in a shady area for about a week while the weather is still warm (but don't put it in the sun). After one week, move it into the house if you'd like. This is my recommendation and I'm sure if you follow these steps, you will see immediate positive changes within the month. I will make videos soon about how to save a plant that is in decline or struggling. Where in the world are you located - I'd like to know the general climate and temperature. I wish you the best of luck and thank you very much for watching my videos. Please recommend my channel to your friends and relatives.Take care and please let me know the results!

      @@cactusandsucculentexchange hello and thanks for your detailed explanation. I'm not sure what kind of soil I used but I will definitely change it for the one you suggested above. The pot has good drainage. I think my problem,now that you mentioned it, is overwatering. I will stop this immediately. I have red lava rock that I will use. Yes, please do a video on how to save a struggling cactus or caudex. Finally, I am in Central Florida, hot and humid most of the time. Thank you so much again! Ho guardato con molta attenzione e interesse il tuo video, l'ho trovato molto interessante. Ho sempre coltivato Cactus, ma da qualche anno il mio interesse si è rivolto verso gli Adenium che trovo siano bellissimi come piante, con delle fioriture splendide! Quest'anno però, la pianta che ho da più tempo non mi è fiorita, e non so a cosa attribuire questa cosa, l'ho rinvasata ad aprile, ho forse sbagliato momento? Da qualche anno semino gli Adenium, ho degli Arabicum di 4 anni bellissimi, nel tuo video ho visto che quando semini bagni abbondantemente, e le piantine nate sono bellissime. Io invece finora le semine le ho annaffiate con molta parsimonia, e se mi dovesse capitare di seminare ancora farò come fai tu. Grazie per i tuoi bei video.

      @cactusandsucculentexchange 22 дні тому

      Thank you very much for watching and for your question! I am curious about the climate where your plants are growing. Could you please tell me generally where you are located? There could be many factors as to why your Adenium did not bloom. Adenium roots are sensitive to change of soil environment. That could be the reason as it was adjusting to the new pot. Also, the temperature of your region could impact blossoming. The third reason, it could be a change in fertilizer. Adenium is a rather domesticated plant that likes to stay with one type of fertilizer. I recommend one tablespoon of 0-45-0 every year in the beginning of spring. Also, 20-20-20 soluble fertilizer can be used throughout spring and summertime. One teaspoon per gallon of water is sufficient (it should be highly diluted). This will give the plant good nutrients and encourage blooming. But remember that when you are using 20-20-20, every two months, one watering should be plain water without any fertilizer to flush out the salt that remains in the fertilizer. I hope your plant starts to bloom again and I'm sure it will happen. Thank you again for your great question and your very kind comment. I am always here to work with my subscribers with their questions. And by the way, Adenium is my favorite plant! Best of luck and best wishes!

      You are very kind! If the seeds have sprouted, it is about time to place them into the soil. Use soft potting soil - the closest you can find would be Miracle-Gro potting soil, moisture control in a green bag. When you place them into the soil, water them and keep them somewhere warm. Also, place breathable mesh on top of the pot and check on them every day. Make sure the soil doesn't dry out but don't water it too much. You can water it once every other day. If the weather gets colder from what the temperature is today, water it once every 3 days. If the weather gets above 80 degrees F, then you should water them every day. Don't put them in direct sun, just place them in a shady but warm area. Keep me posted on their progress and good luck! Thank you again or your comment - I appreciate it. Tomorrow, I'll be posting a very interesting video so please check it out through the end. It's going to be about a very rare species. Take care!

      Thank you so much for your comment and for sharing your experience! Please keep these plants next to each other, especially in the spring and summer. They may seed - that is the time you should fertilize them early in the spring. It is possible they can flower but they have to be next to each other in order to provide seeds after blooming. Keep me posted on their progress. Maybe you can get seeds out of them which will make your propagation more successful than cuttings. Also, I have another technique and I will make a video about it so please stay tuned! Best regards :)

    • @cactusandsucculentexchange
      @cactusandsucculentexchange Місяць тому

      Hello! Do you use any root hormone when you take the cutting? For this plant, since the structure of the body of the plant is more woody, you have to use very strong root hormone in the form of a liquid or powder. If it is in powder form, you have to put the cutting into moist soil. If it you use a liquid root hormone, you have to keep the cutting in the liquid solution for at least 1 week, then you can place it into the soil. Please make sure that you read the bottle and follow the instructions because the liquid is very strong. Also, do not keep the cutting in the liquid longer than 5 days. If you don't get a result, let me know - I can make a video for you on this topic. Thanks for watching and good luck!

      @@cactusandsucculentexchange Hello , thank you very much for your reply. I tried many times to root the cuttings, using both powdered and liquid hormone, but unfortunately I only succeeded in rooting one cutting that I used the powdered hormone for. I assume that it also depends a lot on temperature, humidity and the soil used. I, together with many growers from Slovakia, have been trying for a long time to propagate it using branch cuttings, but without success. We would greatly appreciate it if you could make a video on how to do it. 😎

    Love the leaves on this plant. Indoors it’s a messy plant since the small leaves drop lol

    Fun plant to propagate. It’s like watching a bud pop out of a potato. Great video not to many videos about this plant. Great for a collection

    Would you be able to share the brand you use for anti-fungal?

      Hi - thank you for watching. Yes, I use Hi-Yield Dusting Wettable Sulfur but any anti-fungal product for gardening should work just fine. It could come in the form of a powder or a thick liquid or paste. Powder seems to be more effective for my use. Thanks
