Carol of the Bells, or Shephard’s Bell Carol, the variation used in this episode, isn’t powerful as a song itself, it’s powerful because it was the song being sung during a traumatic event. It could’ve been Silent Night or O Little Town of Bethlehem & the scene in this episode would’ve been the same, the power of it is it’s significance to Ruby. I’m sure you probably know this, but when a person goes through a traumatic event, certain details at the time of that event can imprint on their mind, like the smell of the room or external noises, like the sound of rain. It’s a fact that a child being separated from their birth mother, even as a baby, is a traumatic event, as they’re instantly losing the bond they formed with their mother in utero, including all of the smells, sounds, & feelings. So the trauma of Ruby being left by her birth mum on a Church doorstep in the snow & cold, while Shepherd’s Bell Carol was being sung by the choir inside, imprinted in Ruby’s mind & body, hidden because it was within her subconscious as these things happened to her as a newborn, where explicit memories can’t form yet, but they can encode implicit memories even prior to birth, so that’s why the snow & the song were so powerful, as they’re imprinted memories from trauma, which is something Maestro couldn’t even comprehend as being such a powerful thing. I think that’s a really powerful message, because it’s saying that humans are just as powerful and important as Time Lords and Gods.

An Aeolian harp is a musical instrument played by the wind. I think they're using Aeolian in that sense, that it's a product of the wind.

Correction: As a lot of people have pointed out, 'Aeolian Tones' are not a concept invented by the writers for this episode, but the real name for the sounds created by wind passing over objects. Both Aeolian tones and the Aeolian scale derive their names (by various means) from the Aeolus, ruler of wind in Greek mythology. My frustation with the term in this episode was clearly misplaced. A classic case of knowing a little about something - but not the whole picture. I was so confident in my knowledge of music theory that I didn't even think that it could have been anything else. Sorry everyone!

Your arrogance about one sense of use of the word Aeolian is quite off-putting. As someone guilty of pedantry myself at times.. I recognize it coming very strongly from you. It is so strong that it detracts from an otherwise engaging and insightful analysis. I'd like to give credit for professional analysis, but your tone and attitude can truly harm what you're trying to say if you aren't being self-aware. The writers might have slightly misconstrued things, but the wound of the wind and its various tones does IN FACT meet the ancient definition of Aoelian - being a reference to Aeoleus, god of the winds.

Aeolian tones, as opposed to the aeolioan scale, usually refers to the "white noise" of fluctuating wind as it interacts with objects.

Fun fact on the rotation of the spheres, the Earth's frequency is about 3.169x10^(-8) Hz, which means it's a slightly flat C#, almost exactly 33 octaves below middle C!

As a trained geographer, when they referred to “Aeolian tones” as “wind created music” it made perfect sense to me since I immediately recognized ‘(Ae/E-)olian processes’ (namely the role & effect of wind in Geology and Meterology). Thus, the term makes sense as “Aleatoric music created through (A)eolian Processes”. The etymology comes from the Greek word for the god of the wind, ‘Aeolus’. In turn, that gave the name to the Aeolian islands which in turn then gave their name to the “Aeolian scale” which you mentioned.
