That still doesn't qualify them as being "proto-metal", because even rock music can also be heavy. 51:39 hmmmm...Helmet are not really an alternative metal band. They have always been an alternative rock band with just more distortion on their guitars. That's it. Don't believe me? Trust me. I have listened to all helmet's discographies, and yet none of them sound anything remotely close to being metal.
