Firefighter CPAT Workout

"What do I need to do to prepare for the firefighter CPAT test?" The answer to that really depends on your own physical condition. It's hard to prescribe exactly what you need to do to prepare for taking the test. In this video, I collaborated with firefighter/paramedic Mark Robison to put together some basic exercises that can be completed with minimal equipment to mimic the movements found in...

In what level is steermaster please tell me its on 5 or 6?
The stair master has its own CPAT sequence: ⬆️ 91 Enter
Thanks for the great video! I am currently training to enter the fire academy, and we need to complete the PAT. I am presuming it similar or nearly identical to the CPAT. Currently, I can clear without a vest around 190 steps in 2 minutes and 50 seconds. Do you guys happen to know what speed the stairmaster set on for the step portion of the test?
You’re welcome! The StairMaster has a specific CPAT sequence (⬆️, 91, Enter) that starts 20sec at 50/min then ramps up to 60/min for 3min. For a total of 230 steps in 3:20. Sounds like you’re basically there, but it’s totally different when you have to do it with an extra 75lbs on! So “CPAT” is a standardized test that’s the same no matter where you take it. If a specific recruit school has their own physical ability test, it may be similar to CPAT, but could vary quite a bit depending on how they have it set up.
Passed mine today first try and minimal training… not as bad as it seems
That’s great! It all depends on your physical fitness and mentality going into it. I’ve seen as many as 20 out of 22 candidates fail on test day. That wasn’t a typical day, but it goes to show you not everyone who tries it will come close to passing.
@@KarryJones just wanted to provide reassurance to anyone feeling nervous like I was.. glad you posted this video with a walk through though, it really helped!
I just finished my first cpat today and was incredibly surprised by my time. For anyone saying that the cpat is easy, you my friend are incorrect. The marathon runners that think the cardio aspect is easy should start training with 50 pound weight vests lol. I got a 6:21 on my first go around but I think I could do better with better breath control. Anyways, thanks for the video :) huge props to everyone who has completed it and best of luck to those who are anticipating the pain. It's gonna hurt but don't stop pushing. You got this 🤜🤛 Edit: instructor mistimed my first attempt, second attempt sitting at a much more reasonable 8:35 lol. Sorry for the confusion
Thanks for sharing! That’s an incredible time! Yes, just keep pushing through is the key.
Passed my CPAT test today in Connecticut! This was my second go at it-timed out the first time, but today I finished in 8:20. I watched your video a good 20 times to prepare. Huge thanks for making it! At 36, this was no joke, but I got it done!
That’s great! Quite an improvement from your first attempt!
Im training for this now. I will become a fire man
Definitely do lots of stairs in training. That’s probably the easiest to train for, but the one event that knocks the most candidates out.
Test isn’t hard just keep moving and don’t stop don’t worry about time ,
"Isn't hard" is definitely relative to how in-shape you are going into the test. I've seen as many as 20 out of 22 candidates fail on a single test day. It is a mental test as well as physical, so continuing to keep moving forward and pushing through is a must.
that dude looks like he has done this test before lol
That would be correct. This was just for fun after proctoring some tests earlier that day.
@@KarryJones Haha nice
Thank you brother
👍🏼
Took my cpat test for the first time today, and did it in 8 min and 1 sec!!!!
Nice!
Does the time stop as you get to the other event or is it like a straight shot through?
No, it starts after the 20 second warmup on the stairs and doesn’t stop until you finish the last breach/pull.
Hey man I just want thank you. These tips really helped a lot, I passed my cpat at 9:53. I Really appreciate it
That’s great! You’re welcome!
Impressive job! Goals.
Thanks!
Took my first practice run today and was over by 25 seconds . Definitely feel like I could pass as I was familiarizing myself with the course mostly today. The official test is set for next Thursday 🫣🫣
That's not bad! Yes, now that you're familiar with the course, you should be able to go through faster next time. In case you haven't seen it yet, I have a few tips on how to improve your time: ua-cam.com/video/QQqiuYPLBWM/v-deo.html
I need a career change, and I’m thinking of being a firefighter
It's a great career!
This is a pass/fail test. You will never know your time (the proctor cannot tell you). Those are also not approved gloves. Be aware, future firefighters. This video is not an official CPAT test this must be a practice.
You are correct, this was not an official CPAT run. It was a workout after proctoring tests earlier that day.
@@flashattack7063 when you sign the document at the end of the CPAT form you will see your time remaining and whatnot.
I have a CPAT test coming up Thursday any advice ?
Here's all my tips: ua-cam.com/video/QQqiuYPLBWM/v-deo.html Also, just keep pushing through. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard, since any of the individual events aren't that difficult. But, once you get worn down with 3' 20" on the stairmaster, and only a short walk between each event, it makes it much harder than it appears.
@@KarryJones thanks
Completed my test today in 10:05! This video helped so much with seeing technique and how to complete it! So excited for the next phase to come!
That’s great!
The dummy drag killed me I was done by the dummy drag
Yep, it seems so much heavier once you’ve done all the other stations.
Did you pass?
If I take this test at 115 and I’m 5’6 am I cooked ?
It all depends on your endurance level. If you have great cardio and decent strength, you may be ok. Best way to find out is call your testing location and see if you can do a practice test.
I have 6 days to prepare for my CPAT... I'm 53 years old, and not in the best shape.... Plan on doing the stairclimber twice a day for the next 6 days. I can do it now, but have to hold on, so... wish me luck.
You have a lot of work ahead to only have 6 days to prep…but good luck on your journey. Just don’t go so hard that you get yourself hurt, and get plenty of rest before the test.
I have a 4 hr drive there and spending the night. So I’m taking off the day before to rest and recover.
Any tips for preparing? I have only 6 days to prep for my CPAT. I'm 53 and not in shape. I can do the stairmaster with the weighted vest, but barely...
Here’s some exercises to work on some of the movements in CPAT: ua-cam.com/video/lc2oERN4x7Q/v-deo.html
The dummy drag made me fail got about half way and my legs and stamina just gave out
That’ll take it out of you! I think the dummy is second only to the stairs for failing people.
Passed first try with no orientation or practice runs thanks to you guys! I cant wait to be a firefighter one day :)
That’s great! Good luck on the rest of your firefighter journey!
Just passed mine! Was tough but if you don’t quit, you can do it!
Congrats on passing!
Would it be ok to use some of your footage on a video I'm working on?
It depends. Feel free to reach out to me by email (you can find it on my channel about page under “more” by the bio on the YT desktop site).
Didn’t train specifically for it, had done a lot of deadlifts and squats in my regular training, the stair climb was DIFFICULT. My legs felt like jello after. I would definitely take 10-15 mins on a stair master at the end of my workouts if I were to do things differently.
It’s super easy to underestimate how tiring the stairs are after 3:20 with an extra 75lbs on! That 10-15min end of workout stair session is a great suggestion.
Is the stair master 3:00 or 3:20?
Total of 3:20, but the first twenty seconds is not timed (but is required). The official timer starts after the warmup period.
What’s the max time to pass ?
10:20. Not counting the required (but not timed) 20 second warm up on the stairs
Mines tomorrow but i think i will have you beat i climb trees for a living . We will see tomorrow
Maybe so! Good luck!
How much weight is in the vest? Are you allowed to run? Or is it just too heavy to run through this? Maybe this guy is just too good to see the challenge of it???
It’s a 50lb vest with an extra 12.5 on each shoulder for the stairs for a total of 75lbs. No running allowed except for during the hose drag (although I wouldn’t recommend it unless you feel great coming off the stairs). It’s definitely harder than it looks. Each event isn’t necessarily hard, but tying them all together after 3:20 on the stairs is quite a workout!
I did this in 8:40 my first time doing it, at 130lbs. 😃
Wow, that’s great!
Watched this before I took my CPAT, did mine in 9:12 im 5’4” 160lbs the one thing I’ll say about this test is anyone can do it, it’s 100% mind over matter, there was points where I was telling myself I couldn’t do it but just kept going. Just keep going !!!
That’s it! So many people mentally give up when they would be able to finish.
Take mine tomorrow! I’ll update when I’m done
Good luck!
@@KarryJones timed out at the dummy pull, I didn’t pass, it’s definitely a lot harder then a lot of people let on
Oh no! Well, hopefully you have some specific things to train on to be able to crush it next time. Don’t give up!
He's got two hands and two eyes he's hired!.. .
Haha, pretty much today’s standard unfortunately! Only a few years ago, if you didn’t have recruit school and paramedic, it was hard to get hired with most good career departments.
wow man I’m 19 I took it yesterday went thru the stairs with ease with no prior training. But the one thing I messed on and failed was the pulling down the ladder with the rope they had a specific hand formation I just couldn’t remember because of adrenaline.
That’s a bummer. You just have to go all the way up with the ladder and can’t let the rope slide at all on the way back down. If you haven’t seen it, here’s a great walkthrough of the whole course: ua-cam.com/video/x2RgfYyJi4A/v-deo.htmlsi=wSLjEvXX51E7iLGO
Okay I’m not nervous anymore
What’s to be nervous about? It’s a very straightforward test. There is quite a bit of cardio endurance necessary to make it through, especially with 3:20 of stairs to start out, but then you have 7:20 to finish the rest of the events.
Is this an average time? I feel like he wasn't really pushing himself
I don’t know that there’s any data on average time, since it’s a pass/fail test. But from proctoring quite a few tests, average passing time seemed to be in the 9:30 range. However, that’s not counting DNFs. One day there were 22 candidates and only 2 passed. That wasn’t a typical day, but I’d say it’s typical to have 25+% fail on either the stairs or the dummy drag.
@@KarryJones I tend to forget that the average American is severely out of shape lol
Are you not allowed to run or is he choosing to walk?
Only allowed to run during the hose drag.
I’m taking my CPAT test tomorrow morning and 9:00AM I’ll let you guys know how it goes
Good luck! Just keep pushing through to the end. It’s just as much mental endurance as it is physical.
Update.. just got invited to a chiefs interview!! Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do it!! I’m 50 years old and moving on! Thanks for all your videos..
That’s great! Congrats on making it that far and I wish you the best!
I'm 50 and thinking about taking this test
@@brethoing7284 It’s not too late! The rookie on my crew has a few years on you, and he can outwork some of the twenty year olds on the department.
so whats the main difference between the cpat and the ctt? I know they contain similar but different tasks but what is each ones purpose and why do they vary?
CTT as in Criterion Task Testing? CTT was developed by Department of Homeland Security and is geared towards law enforcement. CPAT was developed by the International Association of Fire Fighters and is the standardized test adopted by many states and jurisdictions to test if candidates are physically capable of basic fireground tasks.
The cpat is pretty much designed so woman can pass and move onto to the next testing phase any lame can pass it
That’s sad that you feel that way. CPAT is a standardized test to make sure you are physically capable of performing basic fireground tasks. It’s an objective way to tell everyone; whether they’re couch potatoes, people with disabilities, or athletes; if they can or can’t move on to the next step. It's a precursor to being allowed to begin recruit school in many states, where your physical endurance really is tested.
Is the maze a real dead end/ find your way type maze or simply crawl through? Thank you for the videos
The maze is a very straightforward maze where you start at one side, make two turns to go around the U shape, then come out the other end. There are a few obstacles that are fairly easy to get around, but do slow you down a little. The last is a diminishing clearance obstacle that has you army crawling at the end. If you want to see what it looks like on the inside, check out my CPAT Walkthrough video at the Search chapter marker: ua-cam.com/video/x2RgfYyJi4A/v-deo.htmlsi=geflCkJ85x_bE5JD&start=251
@@KarryJones Thank you!
Can you put two knees down during the whole pulling? When I tried, my leg that wasn’t kneeled was burning still after the stairs. The rest would have been nice.
Yes. You have to have “at least” one knee on the ground when pulling the hose. I’m not sure how effective it would be to have both knees on the ground, since you wouldn’t have as wide of a “stance” to push off of, but it is allowed.
Easiest test if you practice a monkey can do it
If you are physically fit, yes, easy to do it within the 10:20 time limit. But you’d be surprised how many people attempt it and fail.
This test is no joke him sweating in the beginning of this video holding his composure is an understatement (yes I passed )
So, the sweating at the beginning was just from helping reset the test for the candidates earlier that morning, haha. But yes, the test is much harder than it appears!
Super impressive bro. I was rooting for u thru the screen. lol. I take my practice test Saturday but if I pass I’m good. I’m taking that dummy drag technique.
Haha, thanks. Yeah, you're required to have at least one hand holding the handle on the harness, but there's nothing that says you can't drag it while facing forward. Also, going way back to football lineman drills, short, choppy steps are key. Don't stop or you'll have to overcome static friction to get going again.
When I did it, I just missed 7 minutes, had like 8 minutes and change. I was completely gassed, I don’t know how anyone gets anything under 8 minutes. My hats off to this guy.
Truth be told, I was so drained afterwards that I couldn’t even stand up for a solid 10 minutes. I attribute that time to how much I was on the stairmaster leading up to it (with a weight vest or two on). When I got off the stair climb event, my legs were feeling good enough to sprint with the hose line, although I would not recommended it for most people.
@@KarryJonescoming off the stairs my legs need to recover so I power walk and keep that pace for the duration. What has gotten me the couple of times I tested is getting thru the search part. By time I make my way out I’m extremely gassed with little reserves for the dummy. I believe the way u did the dummy will help me this weekend.
@@KarryJonesI really focused on the stair master as well. For my last couple weeks of training I was doing two vests for a total of 80lbs. I probably should’ve trained a little more legs as well, but in the end it didn’t really matter since I ultimately did not get hired. It was good experience though, I don’t regret it.
One of the tips I used that I saw a long time ago in the search tunnel is to stay to the right side of the tunnel to help guide you. You’d be surprised how the tunnel can set in a little bit of panic and elevate your heart rate. I took it nice and easy and used that time to help catch my breath Made it easier to charge through the dummy drag Also use your body weight on the ceiling breach to push and pull the pike Just some tips I wanted to throw in. Good luck to anyone taking the test and reading this and keep training. The academy is going to kick your ass no matter how good your cpat time is
Thanks for the extra tips!
Thanks, I take my first cpat in a month. I spray Insecticides on people yards currently and the backpack is around 60lbs that I carry so I am somewhat in shape. Any suggestions on what I should be doing to prepare physically for this. I am jogging 3 times a week for 30 minutes, doing 20 sit ups and 20 pushups so far. I am surprisingly nervous for no reason.
How fast is the stair master set for testing
The required 20sec warmup is 50steps/min and increasing to 60steps/min for the 3min timed portion. If you are practicing on a StairMaster, the code for CPAT is ⬆️9️⃣1️⃣(enter)
@@KarryJones sweet!!
