Hirut Bekele (ሂሩት በቀለ), an Ethiopian singer and songwriter also known as a “magnificent vocalist”, was one of the most popular and successful performers in her nation. Hirut Bekele was born to Lieutenant Bekele Kinfe and Tenagnework Mekonene on October 8, 1942 in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia and died in 2023. Hirut was always passionate about music ever since she was a young child, and used to sing around the house with her closest friends. They inspired her to pursue music more seriously after hearing her knack for singing. These comments encouraged her to seek a career in music. Early on, this proved to be challenging. She had to be extremely covert in order to realize her ambition because being a singer in Ethiopia had many bad implications. In 1958, Hirut, at the age of 16, attended an Army Force Orchestra for a singing competition, where she was immediately chosen. Her debut song, Ye-Hare Shererit, was a hit, and she quickly rose to fame. She published her first album on a 45-PRM record in 1961, and the publication of her second album in 1962 helped her gain popularity and success on the national music scene. The following three decades saw a steady rise in Hirut's popularity, garnering her numerous awards and prizes for her services to the industry and traveled extensively around the nation and the world. She also made a significant contribution to the Golden age of Ethiopian music, which lasted from the early 1960s to the late 1980s. Hirut recorded more than 200 songs over her illustrious career, which is a remarkable feat. From 1961 through 1976 alone she released 38 songs on Phonograph Record (45 RPM). From 1977 until her retirement in 1994, she released 14 Cassettes with each cassette containing 10 songs. Throughout the course of her incredible career, Hirut had collaborated effectively with a wide range of artists, including Mahmoud Ahmed, Alemayehu Eshete, Mesfin Haile, Tadele Bekele, Theodros Tadesse, Melkamu Tebeje, and many more. Even though Hirut started her career with the Army Force Orchestra, because of her rising renown and skill set, the Police Orchestra were plotting to kidnap her. By early 1959, the kidnapping of Hirut and her imprisonment in a distant, well guarded police camp caused a great deal of hostility between the two military forces. Hirut ultimately joined the Police Orchestra after several months of disagreement between the two services, and she stayed there until her retirement in 1994. A legendary singer known for her incredible vocal range and unforgettable organ accompaniment, has been admired for both her charm and distinctive tone. She gave listeners gorgeous tunes, brilliant organ and kirar orchestrations, and stunning recordings of the psychedelic music she created. She is a true diva in the annals of Ethiopian music history due to her personality and her talent. Many of today's generation of young Ethiopian singers are said to have been influenced by her work.
