Dear Arenda, while I appreciate that you made this video and uploaded it out of the goodness of your heart, It is NOT easy to follow. Too bad because your system (eventually) proves to be a nifty short cut. But I spent 45 minutes trying to knit along. You go slowly enough through the theory and slowly through the way you're NOT using. But then, when showing us what you DO do... you rush! You also don't turn your hands/needles to a different angle so the camera could show exactly where you're putting the tip of your needle. You don't slow to make it clear in what order you release the two loops and where. I'm a strong intermediate knitter and I slowed down the video to .25 of normal speed and watched each segment 5 times before I could replicate the moves you make. At the "point" ... I almost gave up. You do one thing, you say 'oops, no not that' you go back quickly then you barrel through the fix. Twice you back track. Could you hear my yelps of frustration? I got it finally. But then on the following row, you call knitting the yarn-overs "knitting decreases". Whaa??? The decreases just happened on the purl/point row when you decreased your stitch count by pulling the 2 slipped stitches over the middle stitch! Except that you used a YO to remedy that. I've never heard knitting a YO called a decrease - it's completing the creation of a new stitch i.e., exactly the opposite of a decrease. Your system is probably ingenious but holy cats!

It has taken over an hour to find a video that shows a first row started with a slip stitch after a long tail cast on. Just wished it had a more detailed instruction of how to keep it secure

This is fantastic! After so many years of knitting and taking everyone's word for it that you must go down 1-2 needle sizes when ribbing, I never fully understood why. Like, shouldn't the ribbing alone be enough to make that part of the work "smaller" (more elastic)? And now I know what to look for to avoid having to do that workaround. I always hated switching needles (there were times I forgot to switch after ribbing! argh!) and the stitch size difference bugged me.

Some wool just has a wild smell to it. I brought some Icelandic wool home one time and my cat stood over it with this crazy look on him like he had just killed it. 🐑 😮

Thank you for this tip! Would this same approach apply with ribbing? I'm wondering if tightening up the p2 after the first k2 would help that column. Already tightening up when bringing yarn to front to avoid ladder, but still getting clumsy column next to selvedge. Thanks!

For English (thrower) knitters. In Continental, you already have your yarn in front before purling. And even then, there is still more yarn in K-to-P (as compared to P-to-K or K-to-K). Throwers - if the above solution does not completely resolve the issue, try this (Continental, too): Twist the purl stitch (wind clockwise) which makes for less yarn and less sloppy previous-K stitch. On subsequent rounds, you will have to P-TBL to maintain that twist. When moving on to stickinette or garter sections, simply remove the twist and knit as normal.

I've a scarf I designed about 3 years ago and never finished because I didn't know how to do the graft in pattern. Thanks for a lovely video. I'm going to do a swatch to practice and then it'll be onto the scarf.

It's a day later and I continued to practice this technique, and I'm so glad I persevered. The edge tension in my swatch is improved from what it was before when I first started to apply this technique. One thing that enabled me to get better results is the understanding this technique allows in the formation of the stitches and the yarn used to form them. I think I will continue to practice until I get the swatch to be as uniform as possible. I know that the edge tension issue will not be 100% eliminated because the nature of the stitches will not allow it. But any amount of improvement is great, in my opinion. Also, I've been practicing using worsted weight 100% wool yarn. Thank you again for this demo :)

Helpful demo. Thank you. I wonder how much of this tension at the edges will resolve. Will there still be an issue at the edges just by the nature of the stitch? I've tried and tried and the best I can do is make it less noticeable, but I can see that the edges are different from the rest of the stitches on the row/fabric even after I tried this method.

Thank you so much for this! I know how to graft knits and how to graft purls but the combination always intimidated me XD I don't usually use a cheat sheet now. How I remember it is this: every stitch is worked twice, the first time it is left on the needle, the second time it is dropped of. The first time is always opposite to how the stitch presents. So I go into a knit stitch purlwise and through a purl stitch knitwise. Then for the second time the stitches are dropped off according to how they present, a knit stitch is dropped knitwise and a purl stitch is dropped purlwise. Hope this helps :D

Arenda, thank you for this clear video. I have completed the cuff after many, many unsuccessful starts. Now that I see your demo, it is pretty easy, but finding the thread was a real challenge until I saw you dig deep for it.

This is a fabulous technique!! I used the cheat sheet and all went well. I am making the Winter White Cable Yoke sweater, a free pattern from Patons. There is a cable yoke around the shoulder knitted lengthwise and joined. The join calls to be stitched together but that would leave a seam. This method is much much better! Thank you :)
