Lamentatio ieremiae
A setting for baritone & organ
The prophet Jeremiah laments the destruction of Jerusalem in 587 BCE.
For Maundy Thursday (Jeremiah 1:1-5, Aleph - He)
Score available from IMSLP:

Photo: Dresden, 1945
Here begin the lamentations of the prophet Jeremiah:
ALEPH How deserted lies the city,
once so full of people!
How like a widow is she,
who once was great among the nations!
She who was queen among the provinces
has now become a slave.
BETH Bitterly she weeps at night,
tears are on her cheeks.
Among all her lovers
there is no one to comfort her.
All her friends have betrayed her;
they have become her enemies.
GHIMEL After affliction and harsh labor,
Judah has gone into exile.
She dwells among the nations;
she finds no resting place.
All who pursue her have overtaken her
in the midst of her distress.
DALETH The roads to Zion mourn,
for no one comes to her appointed festivals.
All her gateways are desolate,
her priests groan,
her young women grieve,
and she is in bitter anguish.
HE Her foes have become her masters;
her enemies are at ease.
The Lord has brought her grief
because of her many sins.
Her children have gone into exile,
captive before the foe.
Jerusalem, turn back to the Lord your God!

'In nomine' ('In the name of [the Lord...]') was a popular cantus firmus among English Renaissance composers. The present setting introduces many anachronistic harmonies. By turns, all four parts present the tune. Score & parts are available from IMSLP: imslp.org/wiki/In_Nomine_(St._Pierre,_Anthony)

Que bueno
Very impressive performance indeed. The composition sounds very suitable for many winds.

Very nice
A splendid souvenir. (Meanwhile our 1st meting might have been also some 50 years ago...)
Bedankt Max! In feite, heb ik je in 1981 ontmoet. Dat was bij de uitvoering van 'Der Tag des Gerichts.'
Plaudits to the Metropolitan Winds & Travis Grubissi for this energetic performance.
What a beautiful performance of this difficult piece.
So lovely.
Many thanks!
Beautiful. Thank you
Kind thanks. I enjoyed composing and recording these pieces and am very pleased with the singers' rendition.
I was born in Brooklyn Maimonedes Hospital Pronounced MaimoModees in Brooklyn My Grandparents and all my uncles and aunts spoke that way Y'know like how yooz should oughta tawk Instead of coin they said 'KERN' Instead of turn they said 'TOIN" I don't know why they couldn't switch the vowels around properly
Wonderful performance and variations!
Thank you! I'll pass the compliment on to the performer.
Anthony St. Pierre did make a real challenge out of this composition for such a difficult instrument. Wonderfully, since David Pell succeeded to pass with flying colors.
These are beautiful.
Many thanks!
Terrific job Dave!
I'll pass the compliment on to Dave.
Neat
Very nice once more. All those different violin techniques. I wonder if you composed it yourself (as a non- violin outsider?), or that Mrs Rose did make some suggestions how some variations could be executed on the violin. I am still way behind in publishing Folías from the Toronto area since my provider migrated to another sort of platform around Christmas, but I guess they have solved all the problems and that I will be able to include at least 4 other Folías in the cathedral. It is a feast.
Thank you! Actually, I had some violin lessons long ago. But yes, Ms. Rose did have some suggestions that made the piece easier to play.
I truly loved this piece even though I’m not playing any more. If I was I’d want to study this and even perform it! Bravo!
Very nice.
Very interesting.
Beautiful.

Beautiful Anthony
Many thanks!
very nice!
There is a very nice variation with an eastern flavour fairy tale (Sprookjes uit Duizend en Eén Nacht') that reminds of Scheherazade with the intervals and way the phrases are started. Very nice indeed. I have included all three folias: for organ, clarinet and oboe at the website of the cathedral. I am not in doubt another one will follow soon ;-)
Inderdaad, men verwacht iets oosterachtig van de hobo. Er komt nog binnenkort Folias voor de fagot, tevens de fluit.
I have to admit, I am very font of the organ as an instrument. Such a nice organ too. The Fughetta sounds fantastic in more or less the 'old style' (the theme is easy to follow) on such a modern organ. Building up the stops towards the end. Very enjoyable indeed!
Awesome
Thank you. I am delighted with this performance! Are you related to the performer?
I love your compositional style and the way you interpret la folia.
Thank you! La Folia lends itself to such a wide range of interpretations.
@@anthonystpierrecomposer So far I have written 6 pieces that use La Folia (2 for Solo Piano, 2 for Orchestra, 1 for Piano & Violin and 1 for Solo Pipe Organ) but I lack the amount variety that you can add to the theme. I especially enjoy listening to your piece "La Folia Variations & Fughetta for Organ".
@@frederickchopin3894 The organ Folia is actually the first one I composed. But it was twenty years before it got recorded.
@@anthonystpierrecomposer I have written many pieces of music but I am the only one who has ever performed them. I only play Piano & Violin so only about 57 of my pieces can be performed by me. (P.S. : Would it be alright with you if I made an arrangement of your Organ Folia for Solo Piano?)
@@frederickchopin3894 Please do not arrange it except for your own use. I have written Folias for piano (an easy one and a more challenging one) and organ manualiter. They are available on IMSLP
Opnieuw fantastico!

Beautiful set of variations, and playing!
I came across this story today and was trying to image what a Brooklyn accent sounds like. Thank you for reading it! Really fascinating
Thank you! I had fun reading this story.
Very nice and ingenious Folía again hidden in the turns and twists of the piece. Very enjoyable once more. For me, not that familiar with the horn as an instrument (except the knowledge that it is an instrument difficult to play), the association with hunting might be obvious, but it has nice forceful symphonic qualities and references too with the use of fine dynamics. Impressive piece and excellent performance! I will include it of course into the Folía pages the coming week including the end-picture of the trio in action.
Hartelijk dank voor het complimentje! Ik zal de drie musici laten weten.
Thanks for the nice surprise. This must be brand new, but it sounds if they are playing it for years. I particularly like the soft blending sound in the slower variations. It gives an enjoyable relaxation and moment for reflection as a preparation for the more hectic variations. Your Folía variations become more abstract over the years in my perception. There are even some jazzy Gershwin influences to be heard, but that can be the interpretation or influence of the Toronto Sax Quartet or just my imagination. I will include it in the Folía, a musical cathedral, the coming week.
Hartelijk dank!
Beautiful and Steep!
Thank you!
This is very well made. Thank you for providing this video as well as part 2.
also love the Christmas-y-ness of the fast section
love the disorientation
Thanks for another wonderful set of variations which is executed so well. What a fine bunch of players for this demanding piece with a spectrum of so many different moods in a row.

@@joaquinsanchez5152 Are you looking for something for recorder & piano? I don't know of any other pieces in this style for this combination; that's part of the reason I wrote it! But if you like the idiom, listen to Olivier Messiaen's music.

What a great performance and composition!
Amazing. That one is skilfully able to play such elaborate variations on such a difficult instrument! I loved it.
I guess the first Folía for solo percussion instruments (Karl Jenkins composed a Folia for marimba (Evelyn Glennie) and strings in 2004 if I am correct) and a nice one too! Thanks.

@@anthonystpierrecomposer Graag gedaan, ik heb ervan genoten.
It brought me somewhat back to the association of the Folía (Folies d'Espagne) by Marin Marais with his bass viol, but this is for double bass solo and far more contemplative and daring in a modern idiom and approach. It is great fun!
What a feast to hear the Folía variations on a sax solo in a composition using all the techniques suitable for the instrument. With the leaps of intervals, flashy scales, flageolets, rhythmical patterns and stops. 5 Variations and it ended abruptly while I was in for more. Thought it would end in an very slow ending variation to kick off ;-) Fascinating!
Yes I am addicted to the Folía for years and collected hundreds at a website but never heard one for trumpet solo! Such a nice composition and a fabulous technique on the trumpet (although I don't know that much about trumpet playing I can hear that you have to be a very experienced player to get those wonderful tones out of the instrument). Enjoyed it very much indeed!
Beautiful!!
Thank you! 😊
