The Jim Crowe Era
From Segregation to Civil Rights: The Story of Jim Crow Laws
From 1877 until the civil rights movement of the 1950s, the Jim Crow laws enforced racial segregation in the American South. Originating from a derogatory minstrel routine, these laws mandated the separation of whites and “persons of color” in public transportation, schools, parks, cemeteries, theaters, and restaurants. The famous “separate but equal” decision in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) upheld these laws, but in 1954, Brown v. Board of Education declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional. This decision paved the way for overturning other forms of Jim Crow legislation.
The term “Jim Crow law” emerged in 1884, describing laws that enforced racial segregation. It originated from a song-and-dance routine called “Jump Jim Crow,” performed by a white actor in blackface in 1828. The phrase evolved into a derogatory term for African Americans. Southern legislatures enacted Jim Crow laws at the end of the 19th century, imposing racial segregation. These laws became synonymous with systemic discrimination against African Americans.
During the Reconstruction era following the abolition of slavery in the United States, federal laws provided civil rights protections for freedmen and African Americans. However, in the 1870s, Democrats gradually regained power in Southern legislatures through the use of violent paramilitary groups like the Ku Klux Klan. These groups disrupted Republican organizing, drove out Republican officeholders, and intimidated Black voters through lynching and violence. The Compromise of 1877, a corrupt bargain, marked a turning point. It resulted in the withdrawal of federal troops from the South, allowing white Democrats to regain political control. These “Redeemer” governments enacted Jim Crow laws, officially segregating the country’s population. These laws were a manifestation of authoritarian rule, specifically targeting African Americans. States passed restrictive voter registration and electoral rules to suppress Black People’s voters. This led to a significant decrease in political participation by African Americans and many poor white people. Between 1890 and 1910, most former Confederate states disenfranchised the majority of Black people and tens of thousands of poor white people through tactics like poll taxes, literacy tests, and residency requirements. While some illiterate white people were temporarily exempted through grandfather clauses, the measures did not relieve most Black people.
As a result of these discriminatory measures, voter turnout dropped dramatically throughout the South. For example, in Louisiana, registered Black voters decreased from thousands to a mere fraction of eligible Black men. Similar disenfranchisement occurred in North Carolina and other Southern states, eradicating Black voters from the rolls. The political representation of African Americans vanished, and their growing middle class was hindered. In addition to political disenfranchisement, public institutions such as schools and libraries were also affected by segregation. Public schools for Black children received consistently lower funding than white children. Libraries for African Americans were underfunded and scarce until the early 20th century. Even during the Progressive Era, when formal segregation was becoming customary, African Americans faced significant obstacles in accessing education and resources.
The Jim Crow laws imposed racial segregation in every aspect of daily life in various states. Examples included separate facilities for education, transportation, housing, hospitals, restaurants, and theaters. The laws prohibited interracial marriage and mandated separate bathrooms, waiting rooms, and entrances. They even dictated separate seating arrangements in public venues. These laws aimed to enforce racial discrimination and maintain white supremacy.
In summary, the origin of Jim Crow laws can be traced back to the gradual erosion of civil rights protections for African Americans during Reconstruction. The Compromise of 1877, along with the resurgence of white Democrats, led to the enactment of Jim Crow laws, which segregated the population based on race. Combined with voter suppression tactics, these laws disenfranchised African Americans. They marginalized them in various areas of society, including politics, education, and public facilities.

wtf cost uk nothing, uk only has defence of her property, nuclear sub or a destroyer or frigate. The isles have their defence force, and trumps belly warmer on the line .
I cant belive that was 100 years ago
There are some young girls who were teenagers in these pictures... This is so sad!! 😢😭
May they all be resting in peace. 🕯️🕊️
my friend was groomed & sold into prostitution she was 15 years old.
4:33 *
How on earth did they make a living?
mone good looking
The last woman was listed as a wood chopper, what kind of wood was she known to chop??☹️
My small town used to have a hotel and the owner/operator I was told would sit on the porch on summer evenings with her legs propped on the rail. If she had no underwear on, she was 'open for business'.
These poor women…. Sold into prostitution, trying to support family, former slave parents, etc.,…. Who was going to help them survive??? Prostitution was probably the only option: if indeed, it WAS an option! Bless them for their struggles!
Who said they were sold?
Poorly done video
Apparently Vancouver was a hot location for prostitution. Seems like most of them headed there
El que este libre de culpa que tire la primera piedra. Que en PAZ DESCANSEN.
In the 1992; movie far and away,it shows a brothel with white prostitues Nicole kidman played the role of a beautiful young victorian woman.her exhusband tom cruise played the role of an irish farmer..
That was depressing 😢
I can name off a dozen civilized, modern ,lawful countries that have legalized prostitution and unfortunately Canada isn't one of them .
Courious, what happens to this women while the high society went on "Indian-Hunt"...
Imagine how they were probably abused by their jailers.
Even back then black didn’t crack they was all baddies
2:19 definitely probably the daughter of a raped slave if that now I know these people who made this video are liars
and people still believe there was white privilege. only for rich white men!
all of these women were dressed more respectably than 90% of gals today
And that should show you exactly why how much or how little clothes a woman is wearing has nothing to do with how respectable they are lol.
Where were the customers? Where are their mugshots?
So much sadness and despair in their eyes...
At that time women had few choices for work. This is sad and the music is just annoying and depressing. Gave me the ick, stopped watching it halfway through.
You can clearly see the hard times experienced (clearly etched) on these women's faces during those early eras. People resorted to survival by any means necessary.
Mostly inaccurate pseudo-history filled with incomplete descriptions often containing statements without any reasonable context. Some of the women photographed here were included with absolutely no mention of their having engaged in prostitution at all. No mention was ever made of what often cruel and inhuman circumstances drove these women to prostitution. Footnote: In the early 1980's, the Canadian Federal Government completed a comparative study of prostitution examining the way a number of different nations dealt with (or failed to deal with) the existence of prostitution. Key conclusion: "It is the United States that takes the most Draconian approach to prostitution."
Some rough looking Women there.
UA-cam algorithm is fucking racist.
The men should've been arrested back then as well. This was a double standard, arresting the women but not the men smh.
Prostitution existed, ever since the beginning of time. This evilness is the OLDEST documented business in the book! Smh
Some of these women were bad-looking smh lol.
I feel like with limited choices of earning an income they didn't really have much of a choice😢
Dr. Banting was made a knight commander of the civil division of the Order of the British Empire in 1934 on the birthday wishes of King George the 5th, it's honorary not sure if he traveled to London to be knighted. He was one of two canadians to do so, ironically the other was a Canadian that discovered 4 kinds of wheat, a huge source of carbs. 😅
This is awful, we don't know these ladies' story or why they lived the way they did. If any of their family members are still around and see this I hope they sue the pants off you. Unless you're gonna publicize their johns and plaster their pics and info over the world let these ladies RIP, shame on you.
There is no welfare state on these dates tough times back then.
From the many photos that I’ve seen over the years from around that time period, it seems like most of the prostitutes weren’t very attractive
World's oldest profession
Well that and farmers...😅
Tough old bags 😨
Looks like lost were arrested from one building. I wonder if someone wanted the property? Follow that trail of ownership…
God bless them all!
Because men run the world..
Not a good looking one among them.
Hard to believe most of them lived over 100 years ago, very sad
Are we suppose to feel sorry for the madams too?
In Bellingham, Washington the white people put all the Chinese laborers on a barge set fire to it and sunk it in Bellingham harbor or near Bellingham. It was on placard like they were real proud of slaughtering those Chinese workers.I don't know what the year was but I think this slaughter happened in 1903. I was in the the Bellingham area in the 1990s.
Creepy as all get out to me; maybe it’s the music.
Her faces are very sad 😢
These women are victims. I don’t agree with showing their faces for likes and clicks. They can’t even rest in death.
There is nothing wrong with witnessing how degrading life experience can be. Take it as a history lesson.
You do realize that this is a matter of public records... It can be found in the archives.🧐😏
