Singing at A.P. Carter's grave, July 27, 2015
Переглядів 2203 роки тому
On a hot July day, I sang "Keep On The Sunny Side" at the grave of A.P. Carter, founder of the Carter Family. An image of this song in record form is on the disk in the center of his gravestone. He is buried at the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in the family plot. The church is located at 4977 A.P. Carter Highway, Hiltons, VA.

During the global pandemic, since April 10, 2020, I have been "Singing Out The Darkness" with my neighbors every Friday evening for a half an hour. This song is one of the most recognized English language songs throughout the world. Our band, Clallam County - ("Seattle's Slowest Rising Folk Group) has performed this song for the past 40 years, and our lead guitarist and singer Pat normally sing...

During this global pandemic, every Friday evening since April 10, 2020, I have sung at a safe distance for a half hour with my Seattle neighbors. This children's song is likely several hundred years old and is one of the first songs I learned from Pete Seeger's book, "How To Play the Five String Banjo", nearly 50 years ago.

Since April 10, 2020, during this global pandemic and lock down, I have been singing at a distance with my Seattle neighbors every Friday night. This was the final song at our May 8th "Sing Out the Darkness" neighborhood distance gathering.

Since April 10, 2020, every Friday evening during this global pandemic and lock down, I have been singing at a distance with my Seattle neighbors. This song is based on the song "Hobo's Lullaby". I wrote it for my two and a half year old bilingual granddaughter.
"In This Time" - (Covid19 Seattle neighborhood "Sing Out The Darkness" 5-8-20)
Переглядів 634 роки тому
Every Friday evening since April 10, 2020, weather permitting, I sing at a distance with my neighbors during this global pandemic and resulting shutdown. I wrote this song in March, 2020, based on Arlo Guthrie's great song, "In Times Like These". I have previously posted a video version of this song on UA-cam.

Peter McKee, Tom Rawson, Jean Geiger, Dan Maher, and Ellen Van Der Hoeven led some enthusiastic folks in a gathering that Pete would have enjoyed. And Dan insisted on leading with no microphone! That was an amazing feat. Thanks to one and all. - Peter McKee

In honor of Woody Guthrie's 100th birthday in 2012, Peter McKee and Pat McIntyre traveled from Seattle to the Columbia River on a three day, 980 mile road-trip to sing Woody's song, "Roll On Columbia" at the confluence of the six rivers which Woody mentions in his song. This is a 12 minute video of this latest Peter and Pat adventure. Thanks, Pat, for being such a trouper!

    Now, 7 years later, the Seattle School District is back at it. In 2022, some issues are new, but it is still the teachers who shoulder the burdens. Solidarity once again!

    I wrote this song for the 2010 family reunion, and hoped to bring it back for our upcoming 2022 reunion talent show, but that pesky COVID exposure got on the way. To one and all - have a great time! - Peter

      As I did this 6 years ago, before I retired as lawyer, filmed by my law partner on her cell phone in my office, I haven't checked this video in several years. And some has actually posted a comment two months ago. THAT is amazing. Glad you liked it.

    A new song of hope? If so, why fill the video full of negative political pictures. It took away the good feeling from an otherwise nice song.

  • @Banjo362
    @Banjo362 7 років тому

    Sounds Awesome, I like the first song you played its a 2 finger style, I taught myself 2 finger thumb lead banjo but I prefer not to wear picks it has a more dark haunting and mellow sound.

  • @PeterHDMcKee
    @PeterHDMcKee 7 років тому

    Gordon - thank you for your note. Yes, I am using just the thumb and index finger to play the song, a style Pete called "double thumbing". I suspect it has other names - clawhammer folks would call it "drop thumb", but this is not played frailing or clawhammer style. Unfortunately I don't know how to write tab, and I can neither read and write music, so I have nothing of a written form on this song. Your note did make me wonder how I learned it, more than 30 years ago. I think I just learned Pete's style of double thumbing found on page 19 of his banjo book and then applied it and tried to replicate what I heard on his recording of this song as he played it with Arlo Guthrie on the recording mentioned at the end of my little video. Sorry I cannot be of more help. I guess that's why it's called folk music. Thanks again for writing and stumbling onto my video. It is still amazing to me that anyone has found it! Take care, Peter.

    Peter, it looks like you're using two-finger on Well May the World Go, yes? Do you have a tab for it?

    I wrote this song in 2013 as my video entry to a contest being run by Bob's Red Mill of Portland, Oregon. They were soliciting the best recipe using their Steel Cut oats. The winner of that contest would go to Scotland to compete in an annual international oatmeal competition. While I was not selected to compete in the semi-final cook-off in Portland, Bob graciously invited me down to play this song at their Portland cook-off that year and Bob later invited me to jam with him - Bob plays a mean piano. It was a great adventure. - Peter (PS - the recipe is real, although I threw in the shot of coffee just as an attention-getting Seattle gimmick.I really don't use coffee in my oatmeal.)

    This morning, 9/9/15, my wife joined 5000 fellow Seattle public school teachers on their first day of their strike against the Seattle school district and their refusal to meet the needs of both the teachers and the public school students. This is the first time teachers in Seattle have gone on strike in 30 years. Judy needed some appropriate songs for their picket duties today, so I sent her this rewrite of "Solidarity Forever" this morning from my downtown office. This afternoon, she sang it on the picket line. Solidarity forever! - Peter McKee - Seattle
