2019 Mazda CX-5 High Idle

I'm diagnosing a high idle concern on a 2019 Mazda CX-5 with a 2.5L engine. Concern is intermittent and is causing a high idle about 2,000 rpm. Test driving the vehicle does not lead me to any definite answers. I did suspect the purge valve intermittently sticking causing a vacuum leak. I was able to confirm the purge valve was indeed sticking and causing concern. Replaced purge valve, retested...

This guy is a AWESOME MECHANIC THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO GOT MY 2010 RUNNING yes I'm shouting went two weeks with out my car!
I am glad that the video helped you out. Thanks for watching!!
What if im getting couple missfires every 5 min or so? Usually happens of almost every cylinder.
That's typical even on a good running engine. If there is no code for misfiring and it doesn't feel like it's misfiring, I wouldn't worry about it. Thanks for watching!!
Having an issue with 7/8 cylinders. Got a half 🫏 diagnostic and they just say I needed a new motor (oil on spark plugs) and admitted that they didn’t pull valve covers or even check the pcv system.
It’s frustrating when mechanics don’t take the time to do a thorough job. Thanks for watching!!
Great video easy to understand i have same problem on my 2017 dodge journey only 47,000 miles a mechanic pull the head everything was complete black means pistons rods block the put new rings bearings new timing chain set of gaskets plugs oil antifreeze thermostat housing complete took the head to be surfaced and valve job said also send the block to face after the complete the job and run the engine for 2 hours toll me everything was done i picked my car i drove for about 300 miles start missing number one tucked to a different mechanic he run the camera through the spark holes and number one has antifreeze in top of the piston can be the gasket or bad head thanks so much h
It would be hard to say. Installation problems?? 300 miles. That's nothing. Got be a faulty install I would think. Thanks for watching!! Good luck.
We have a car with this engine. I hope HGs aren't a common problem on these. I can't keep the thermostat housing from leaking which make me dislike the car. I wonder if people loose too much coolant with the thermostat housing leaking and they end up overheating it and damaging their head gasket? I keep my coolant full.
It is possible that the overheating could cause the head gasket to fail. I hope it is not the case for you.
@@paycheckmonster So far we haven't overheated it. we are sure our coolant is full at all times. Even when the T-stat housing is leaking. fortunately it isn't at the moment.
IPC/DIC fuse that feeds the cluster, cluster is the issue, best way is to repair cluster, BUT if your like me and wanna save $$$, remove the IPC fuse and have IGN E or SEO IGN feed power to the cluster ipc fuse instead. this way its not always hot, but only when vehicle is in start/run condition, if you wanna be safe you can always add another fuse in place
Most of the time the clusters have other issues also. Like gauges that don't read correctly. I could never talk a paying customer into doing that but it might be something a do it yourselfer would want to pursue. Thanks for watching!
@@paycheckmonster well of course theres no money in doing it this way. like i said its about saving $$$ do it this way. My cluster works fine for now, just that it drawing current when it shoulnt have too
What scan tool/software do you use?
Autel MS 909. Thanks for watching!!
@ thank you, video was great!
Appreciate the feedback!!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for watching!!
The blowby in hyundai engines are very common after 90,000 km,but the main issue is,its not letting turbo return oil to drain back into the oil pain, oil would sip into the compression side of the turbo, hence increase in oil consumption.
You must be talking about different Kia engines. This one does not have a turbo. I have also seen that on turbocharged engines though. Thanks for watching!!
Thank you for the video. Your video was helpful and showed that this is an easy DIY. I had my son's 2008 Ford Escape up and running in less than an hour.
Glad it helped. Thanks again for watching!!
We have a Chrysler 200 (same car), that stupid thermostat housing always leaks around the thermostat. Tried fixing it several times, even replaced the housing twice. Can't get it to last even a year w/o leaking.
Plastic wasn't the best design. That's for sure. I usually apply a little silicone sealer on the sealing surface and that helps. I can't say that I replace them that often though. I've seen several crack and also leaking from the gasket area. Most of them that I replace have had several years of use. But yes they are a problem for these engines. Thanks for watching!!
@@paycheckmonster Thanks for the reply. I just installed a metal one i got off amazon. it already leaks, but extremely slow. It doesn't leave a pool of coolant on top of the trans. I think that when it gets worse, i'll re-do it and use silicone sealer like you suggested. I like the metal one because at least the housing wont' crack. Our Chrysler seems to be a pretty good car, so far the weak points are this T stat housing, and the TIPM crapped out.
Excellent instructional video, thank you for posting.
Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! Thanks for watching!!
Friend, could I ask you a question? I have a 2009 Corolla with the engine that you show in the video. I would like to know where the VVT valve filter goes.
I don't think they have replaceable filters. Usually they're is screen built into the oil control valves. Hope it helps. thanks for watching!!
Beautiful. Great job 👍
I appreciate the feedback, thanks for watching!!
Went out the other day. I live in West Pa. Started it and it was making the noise this one was and was leaking some coolant down the ramp of the oil filter . It was actually running down I shut it down and ordered a water pump. That was 2 days ago. Went to the store yesterday and checked the pump. No sound anymore and it's not leaking???? Drove it to the store 7 miles, everything was good dial was almost to middle like usual..is the pump still failing and it had a good day or was it something else????? Jeep just empty every pocket lol
It's not uncommon to have a water pump that doesn't seem to leak all the time. I've seen it the most with extreme temp changes. I just had to replace my wife's water pump on her 2014 Ford Escape. It wouldn't leak with engine warm but when it sat over night in the cold, it showed signs of coolant streaking. Good luck and thanks for watching!
@paycheckmonster so it will be a good idea to change it out? Or hold on until it's significant enough to change?
The reason is I have to do it outside, if I was 30 I wouldn't mind, I'm 50, it's a little tougher in the cold workin on an engine outside. Lol
It's really hard to say how long you could limp it along.
I know the feeling. It's no fun to work in cold conditions. My wife's car was leaking for about 2 weeks. Of coarse it took her a week to tell me she was smelling something like coolant. I made sure it had enough coolant in it and she drove very few miles to work until I could get it changed about a week later. Every situation is a little different though. Hope everything works out.
How many miles on it when you did this repair?
78,000 Miles.
That’s some carnage! She is an old vehicle, though. Too bad the customer (probably) never serviced the differential. That’s expensive negligence! Great video…..the subs will continue growing, just give it some time. PS- was called out to see why a 2006 Cobalt still had ‘service airbag’ on the dash after a third party ‘cleared’ the crash data (which I am not a proponent of). The ‘service’ actually didn’t clear it all. 😐
Thanks for the words of encouragement and thanks for taking the time to watch and support the channel!!
Great video.. there is another video I watched and Although his was good also ,your video is much simpler and quicker
Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it.
Livin the life, awesome! I have a tiny version of what you guys have, same layout only compact; a 1987 ciera sunbridge 2150. All i need is the friends to go beach camping with! lol
It’s amazing to have a good boat to get out on, and friends to share those times with! Thanks for watching!
What’s the torque on the cams ?
M6 bolts are 106 Inch Lbs. M8 bolts are 22 Ft. Lbs. Thanks for watching!!
What model was the one you tested?
Here is the Amazon link. a.co/d/2Lvvh3w
If theres an oil leak there will i be able to see it near oil filter and tbag area between thah snd the batter?
You almost need to use a inspection camera to get under the intake and look. If the oil filter housing is leaking, you should be able to see that no problem. Thanks for watching!!
My too! RAM is not made by engineer, RAM is Put together haphazardly by crazy. I never buy RAM AGAIN. The bad.😢
Thanks for watching!!
The worst case scenario for this would be?
Worst case would be an engine replacement, but there is a lot of things that need to be checked before you get to that point. Fuel injectors to valvetrain concerns or more major things like cam, valve or piston damage. Thanks for watching!!
Technically, if you are working on a properly timed car, you do not need either the special tools or loosening the cam bolt. The easiest way to do this is to mark the crank and the cam sprockets and count the belt teeth between your marks. Then take the tension off the belt, remove the old one and install the new one making sure that you still have the same number of teeth in between your marks. Apparently, the factory techs cannot count, so the OEM advises to use the special locking tools and re-adjusting the current timing, etc., and performing a lot of unnecessary steps, to play it safe :) Now, if the timing is already messed-up by a previous "handy" person, as in the above video, you do need the tools to re-time it.
Remember when some of the new timing belts had alignment marks on them and you just had to align the cam and crank timing marks?? Those were gravy jobs. Thanks for watching!
Great troubleshooting
Appreciate the feedback. Thanks again for watching!!
OMG.. finally I found someone with exactly the same issue and also showing the infamous P0171. You just tapped the purge valve or you replaced? In the case, you needed to wait the problem happens for tapping? This is so weird.. the problem happened since the temperatures dropped up here in Canada
Glad it helped. Definitely replace the valve though. Thanks for watching!!
What happens if you don't do the relearning process?
It won't learn where the stops are, potentially causing premature wear on the actuator and linkage. Thanks for watching!!
Bout to do one. Thanks for the video. So much extra bs doe
I appreciate the view!! Glad it helped.
You are the best👍
Thanks again for watching!! I appreciate the positive feedback.
No no no oh my word. I would of asked the man what about the female behind you right here on the couch. Oh nooʻo
That is a locating pin fly wheel locks it. But I got you. I have a 2014 right now in my shop. I figure a way for us to eliminate that 2 hours trust me I got access to a machine shop
The pin that protrudes and makes contact with crank sets timing location. The flywheel is locked with a tool so you can remove the crank bolt. If you have the crank set so it's making contact with the pin and the cams locked the flywheel holding tool is irrelevant. Then you wouldn't need a machine shop. Thanks for watching!!
Beautiful. I will do this trip someday
It's a great trip, thanks for watching!!
Engine is done
You got that right. Thanks for watching!!
Modern day automotive engineering. Yikes. I recently changed a CR-V exhaust manifold (bad catalytic converter) and had to remove the wiper motor and cowl to gain the extra 1/2” clearance.
You almost need be a contortionist to work on some of this stuff. Thanks for watching!!
@ Absolutely!
The emphasis he put on the word "gem" made me chuckle
Thanks for watching!!
Thanks for the quick reply. Do you have a part number for that relay?
Thank you Sir !!
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!!
How much the starter
I don't recall but it would depend on parts prices in area. Thanks for watching!!
Nice jobs
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have a question hope you can help me I replaced my starter on 2015 Acadia Denali and I broke something that I see behind your hand @ 13:21-13:25 can you tell me what that is because It's more than likely the reason I have an engine light on
That is the knock sensor. Thanks for watching!!
Changed everything you did in this video. still got the cylinder 2 misfire. there’s also a loud ticking or maybe clicking coming from the engine.
You shouldn't need to replace anything until you swap the known good parts from a good firing cylinder to the one that is misfiring. If you swapped the parts and still have a misfire, specially if it's making noise, then you'll have to perform a compression test and maybe a cylinder leak test. I can tell you that you probably have a collapsed lifter on the misfiring cylinder. If you can very a cylinder with low compression then your going to want to remove the valve cover on that bank and to see if any of the rocker arms are loose. Hope this helped. Thanks for watching!!
@ copy that. also the noise sounds like an exhaust leak more like the sound of air leaking? mainly from the air intake manifold area/ throttlebody
hey man great video have you had a problem with your tool and if so how can you reset timing seem that i got tooth off only other video seem to flip tool over have you ran this problem code p0016
No problems with tools. Thanks for watching!!
Any torque values you can post
Hub bolts - 74 lb. ft. Axle nut - 151 lb. ft. Brake caliper bracket - 140 lb. ft.
Excellent walk-through!
Thanks for watching!!
Interesting video keep up the good work
Thanks for watching!!
Tapping on my purge valve dropped idle from 2200 to normal. Looks like I need a new one. What can cause them to malfunction?
They can stick and not seal properly! Thanks for watching!!
Would snow do it somehow?
They just wear out over time. It is a duty cycle controlled part and opens and closes several times. It's really amazing they last as long as they do.
Excellent video!!!!
Glad you liked it!
Did that kit move the front wheels out (increased track width)? Also, I assume those were 15” wheels and wonder if that car had a front sway bar? Nice video, it shows the frustration of dealing with a “universal kit”.
The width was unchanged. I believe they were 15s. The sway bar I'm not sure about. It drives like it doesn't have one. She's kind off a floater driving down the road. Thanks for watching!!
Ford really went "what if we made this job 1000$+ in labor for a 100$ part
I think you nailed it. Thanks for watching!!
I have one right now on a guys 2013 Lincoln MKX that isn’t moving and has a B11E5 code. I can’t find one video that actually shows replacing the actuator which says to me it’s a pita.
It would be very difficult to get a camera in there and try and get the screws out. Your right though, it is kind of a pain. Thanks for watching!!
It would be hard to get a camera in there to show the actual replacing of the part. You're right though, it is kind of a pain. Thanks for watching!!
@@paycheckmonster Yep it was a pita, but I got it done. Been a mechanic for 51 years, I’m 68 now and still twisting wrenches. Carpel tunnel and arthritis in the thumbs makes things a little more difficult than they use to be.
I know the feeling. This profession is hard the body. Glad u got it all fixed.
