The Emotional Side of Hearing Loss - HLAA Convention Research Symposium, 6/28/24
Fifty million Americans have some degree of hearing loss, making this a critical and growing public health crisis for people of all ages. Hearing loss affects more than just our ears and can often lead to a loss of our easy connectedness with others and our sense of ourselves as social beings. This, in turn, has been linked to such mental health issues as isolation, anxiety and depression.
The Hearing Loss Association of America's (HLAA) 30th annual Research Symposium on June 28, 2024, featured a panel of medical and psychology experts exploring The Emotional Side of Hearing Loss: Barbara Weinstein, Ph.D., Kathy Pichora-Fuller, Ph.D., Peter Dixon, M.D.*, performer Gael Hannan and moderator Ivette Cejas, Ph.D., discussing the powerful emotions of hearing loss, how they impact our behaviors and how we can harness them for a more successful hearing loss journey.

Let us hope some sort of therapeutics will become available within the next decade. But for now, even the ones mentioned here don’t help with low frequency loss.

I wear my hearing aids whenever am awake. Expensive. And I get significant help in clarity. These aids convert. Higher frequencies to lower frequencies. I can hear insects now for firs time in many years. However noise is a big problem which can be mitigated with a remote microphone

One huge oversight that I noticed when I began viewing this video is the absence of a sign language interpreter!!! Captions are good, but English language is a second language for Deaf persons whose primary language is Sign Language. As an English language teacher and hearing impaired person with a Public Information degree, I'm especially interested in making educational and other information accessible to ALL persons. Reading isn't only being able to recognize vocabulary and how words fit together. Language use at home and in one's community influences, along with a person's learning aptitude for language and cultural background, help or hinder a student's ability to read and understand written or spoken text. It's also well documented that written language is quite different than spoken language, and it's likely that people who use American (or another version) Sign Language as their sole or primary form of communication and attended a school for the Deaf would likely struggle with reading the text as quickly as it's displayed AND in the syntax provided. Since American Sign Language does NOT mimic Standard English--nor does spoken language for that matte except in rare cases like in a formal public address or in public discourse where "high" speech is expected given the speaker's social standing or reputation. I appreciate your interest and effort in presenting a symposium for people like me and so many others. I grew up with one hearing ear, so I did struggle to hear in classrooms at times while growing up--and always in social situations. I now where hearing aids and use devices as well as ask for and say what I need in various situations to enable me to function. Even this isn't enough while teaching--I need to enlist the help of my students to tell me what someone said, get my attention or speak into my device if I've missed something or if they're engaged in a talking activity. Yet, they always gladly accommodate me because the support is mutual! By fostering a culture of caring, respect and community during lessons,, I've helped my students appreciate what they have to offer others, value what others do for them, become more confident and self-assured, and enjoy learning! What naturally follows for my students and others in supportive learning environments is raised expectations for themselves and for their futures. Inclusive environments don't only benefit people with disabilities, they help everyone contribute to the whole of society. We all have something to offer others, whether in practical, tangible terms, as a source of inspiration, meaning and/or enjoyment, or in some other way. The connection is there for the taking, if we offer a bit of ourselves in return.

Thank you for your comment. There was an interpreter at the symposium, but out of camera range. At HLAA Conventions, all large sessions have interpreters and are made available by request for workshops.
