O scale, MTH and Lionel Train Layout, using Woodland Scenics
Hello! Welcome to my video of my Christmas Trains set up for 2010. I started in October of 2010 and was finished by early December. This isn't a permanent layout as it was built, after all, in my living room.
All the engines are MTH running on DCS, powered by one half of a Z4000 transformer. The subway is running conventionally on the other half of the transformer. All of the rocks were cast from Woodland Scenics molds using Hydrocal and colored with watered down WS Acrylic paints.
I made this video so my relatives could see just how nuts I am. Hi Glen, Congrats on getting married. One tip though, you better keep your trains in the basement if you want to keep your wife..lol Hi Mom, I hope you're able to play this while down in Florida. If you can't get it to play, just flag down some 5 yr old kid, he'll get you going. Lou, I expect to be playing golf with you in the spring.
Well, enjoy....

This is a 5x10'layout set up in my living room for Christmas using Lionel's Fast Track. Many of the trains are from my Grandfather and came from the 50's. Thanks to Kevin of Bessers Whistlestop in Baldwinsville, NY for all of his ideas.

,
I am new to MRR and am doing my first layout on a 8 x 10 post war,Great Hobby to use you're imagination with and, you have inspired me to create ty....
I like how you did the moutains
Awesome job..
Terrific and inspiring! Congrats!
Great layout. I'm putting plans together to upgrade mine. I hope I can do it as nice.
what kind of curve are those tracks?
Most of the inner track is 0-36. The outer line has an 0-48 loop and an 0-60 loop. The UP Big Boy won’t run on the inner track due to clearances with the elevated outer loop. Space was sort of at a premium.
Thanks man. Nice set up!
Awesome layout and a great video!
4-6-6-4...i have that in the rio grande
Love the scenery,layout,and trains.mmmmmmm
if you want me to subscribe i suggest no circus/zoo music
Amazing layout and the movie is a great way to showcase it. I am just in the planning phase and appreciate the inspiration.
Awesome video, impressive scenery! Can you please share the song you used at 7:45? It's a classic Jazz song and sounds the like 1940s. Thanks for your reply :]
Nicholas, thank you for your kind words. I made the video using iMovie 09 on my Mac. The song at 7:45 is called Gelato and is from iLife Sound Effects which came with my version of iMovie. Many of the sounds and songs on the video came from there. Hope that helps.
Is that a sasquatch standing on the hill above the boats?
i want that layout
Wow you are such an inspiration! I've been intending to stop dreaming and planning and just build something to enjoy. It doesn't have to be perfect, and it doesn't have to take 10 years, to be wonderful. Thanks for showing me that - in spades!
I wish I could have gotten a video of my grandpas O scale layout before he started to tear it apart. It was huge. It would take a train a good 4-5 minutes to make one loop on the main line. It was extremely impressive. He still has it but he feels that he is going to die soon so he has started to tear it down. :(
Wonderful creation! Incredible attention to detail. And it the living room--you're my hero!
@ 14:37 oh so that's how it works
Charlie is cute
I picked that house up on clearance. It was a K-Line, sort of cheap looking when I got it so I weathered it with various paints.
I assume you’re talking about the video? I put that together through my Mac using iMovie.
but i dont have a lighted interer thughgh
@ 6:04 i hvae that same exsact house!!!
what editer did you use for the special efects???
i would love to have a copy of the your track plans
Great job! I especially love the way you put in the subway under the layout!
This layout is by far one of the BEST I have seen yet.
What an awesome train set well done!!
Very Nice. Some day I'll have an empy room to build an eye level layout. or now I'm running a shelf around the master bed room.
wow! can you give an estimate what something like this might cost to make? This inspires me to want to make one.
Start w/ a straight pc of 10 gauge wire, maybe 20” long. Bend it in half so that both ends are even with each other, it looks like a ‘V’. Cut pcs of bailing twine some 4”, 3”, 2” and an 1”. Lay the wire on a flat surface with the ends toward you. Untwist the twine and lay between the wire, longer ones near you and shorter ones as you near the ‘V’. Pinch the 2 ends of wire with vice grips, put the V in a drill and spin the wire. Dip in elmers glue water and sprinkle with green and brown grass.
To be honest its still up. I’m kicking around some ideas for the next one but I do enjoy having this one here. Its built so it could be taken down without a lot of effort.
Have you done another layout since this one?
I’ve done mirror lakes before but this time round I wanted to add some depth and make things more 3-dimensional so I used Woodland Scenics “Realistic Water” and “Water Effects”. It was first time using these products and I they were easy to work with.
i am about ready to try to recapture my childhood with a O lionel train myself. The thick foam pad is a great idea for capturing the appearance of a river. When I was a kid my dad and I used an old mirror for a lake. what did you use? Thanks for sharing.
I used a variety of materials to break up the flatness of the foam...chicken grit from the local feed store, coal, small stones and a variety of Woodland Scenics products such as their earth, grass, ballast etc. Also, the 2" foam allowed me to easily carve downward to create depressions such as where my river came through and underneath bridges.
I'm glad you liked my layout. I used 2" foam board on top of the thin plywood but I didn't want to have to fight hiding the blue color from showing through so I painted the foam with an earth color latex paint. In hind sight I probably should have painted the foam board when it was outside in the driveway, I probably could have spray painted it then but as it was I was inside my living room so I used drop clothes to protect the carpet and painted with a brush.
This is truly inspiring! I am just beginning to create my layout-what did you use as a base coat for the ground? My brother suggested rustoleum paint sprays. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Great job...I really felt the impact of the work put into this display. Sooo real! Thank you!!
one of the best layouts I've seen.thanks for posting
looks like fun. I subscribed
fantastic layout
nice layout, im building one also!
Gr8 vision! Obviously you have done this before. But seriously, all this in less than 3 months! Did I count 4 trains running simultaneously plus the subway? Who needs the big screen TV with that much going on. Thanks for sharing.
