The well of the past is deep. No matter how intently the curious gaze of the researcher peers into the darkness of time submerged within it, the bottom of the well will never be reached. Instead, new depths will continuously unfold, revealing layer upon layer of the unknown. Therefore, when studying a country and its people, one typically begins with an accessible starting point, relying on archaeological data, surviving legends, chronicles, and music.
It is music, in particular, that allows us to feel and unveil the veil of the past in a language we understand through our emotions. So, welcome to the world of antiquity, guided by the melodies of history.

Othala - Aurupesa
The bathhouse in the East Baltic tradition bears a deep imprint of pagan roots and ancient rituals, shaping its magical essence over centuries. It is not just a place for cleansing the body but a sacred temple where humans connect with nature and the mystical forces of their ancestors. The bathhouse served not only as a space for purification but also as a sanctum for dialogue with the spirits of earth, water, and fire.
Connection with Ancestral Spirits
In pagan culture, the bathhouse was considered the dwelling of spirits, particularly those who guarded purity and health. Livonians and Estonians believed in "bathhouse mothers"-guardians of this sacred place. Leaving warm water in the bucket for these spirits was a mandatory ritual, symbolizing respect and ensuring their tranquility. Violating such customs was believed to provoke the spirits' anger, an ominous sign for the household.
Symbolism of the Elements
The bathhouse embodied all four natural elements. The earth was represented by the stones heated to a glowing red; fire blazed in the stove, purifying the space; water created steam that enveloped body and soul; and air served as the medium linking humans to the invisible forces of the world. This union of elements made the bathhouse a space of sacred balance.
Rituals of Cleansing and Magic
Bathing in the bathhouse was not merely a hygienic act-it was a ritual of purification from evil spirits and accumulated negative energy. Birch, oak, or juniper brooms enhanced this process, believed to expel sickness and malice from the body. Estonians and Finns prepared these brooms after the summer solstice, a time when nature held its greatest magical power.
One was required to approach the bathhouse in silence and reverence, as it was considered a boundary between the human world and the spirit realm. Particular importance was given to the first clouds of steam, believed to carry the strength of the ancestors. The initial steam was reserved for men, who, through their presence, protected the home from evil, followed by women as the keepers of the family lineage.
A Place of Transition
The bathhouse was a space of transition, cleansing both the living and the dead. Before funerals, the body of the deceased was washed in the bathhouse, preparing it for its journey to the other world. If a corpse was in the house, the bathhouse was not heated, so as not to offend the spirits. This connection between life and death made the bathhouse a mystical place where the boundaries between realms blurred.
Mythology of Water
For the people of this region, water was not just a cleansing element but a symbol of rebirth. Ponds were often dug near bathhouses to strengthen the connection with natural waters. Bathing after steaming represented renewal, shedding the old and embracing new life energy. Water in these rituals was imbued with magical properties, considered alive and transformative.
Offerings and Respect
In the traditions of many Baltic peoples, the bathhouse was also a place for offerings. Before important events-weddings, harvest festivals, or the preparation of the first brooms-small gifts such as bread, milk, or beer were left in the bathhouse. This was done to appease the spirits, making them allies in life’s undertakings.
The Bathhouse as the Center of the Cosmos
For pagans, the bathhouse symbolized the center of the universe, a place where humans could approach the forces that govern life. The west-facing window, a feature often seen in Finnish and Estonian bathhouses, symbolized the setting sun, marking the end of the old and the beginning of a new cycle. The stones in the stove, heated to redness, represented the sun, while their hissing upon contact with water symbolized the primordial chaos from which the world was born.
Magical Healing
The healing properties of the bathhouse were deeply rooted in pagan magic. Steam was believed to heal not only the body but also the soul, driving out illness and the evil eye. Medicinal herbs were sometimes placed on the stove stones, filling the space with their aroma and amplifying the ritual’s magical effects. Healers often conducted ceremonies in the bathhouse, knowing how to “summon the spirit” correctly to aid the afflicted.
A Keeper of Traditions
Despite Christianization and the transformation of rituals, the bathhouse retained its pagan roots. It remains a place where people cleanse themselves not just of dirt but of evil, where the spirits of ancestors dwell, and where nature’s mysteries are revealed. This ancient heritage continues to be passed down through generations, making the bathhouse a unique space where the magic of the past meets the present.

In the ancient runic songs of the Estonians, like drops of dew on morning leaves, delicate and profound notions of the creation of the world have been preserved. The Livonian Crusade was one of the most tragic and fateful periods in the history of the Baltic peoples. Beginning in the late 12th century, it was part of a larger campaign by the Catholic Church to convert the pagan peoples of Europe to Christianity. Behind the grand banners and resounding calls of faith lay not only spiritual ambitions but also material motives: the conquest of new territor...

Vaid üks olematu rahvas on kirjutanud oma lugulaulu sisse selle ugri hõimu estide põlisrahva rahvaste kangelase muistsetest lugudest. Seesamane, kes on tänasest Eestist ida poole jäävate ugri maade okupant. Võttis meie hõimu maad, allutas meie hõimu rahvad enda nime kandma ning varastas meilt ka Külmataadi. Isegi suuremad pagunid andis talle, sest täitma peab see meie Külmataat seda estide Jõulu aja kangelase Jõulumees kohustusi.
