Rookwood Cemetery
Australia
Приєднався 20 лют 2017
Steeped in history and reflecting the cultural diversity of wider Sydney, Rookwood Cemetery is a tranquil and fascinating place of historical significance, and considerable natural and built beauty. With a total area similar in size to the Sydney CBD, Rookwood is the largest cemetery in the southern hemisphere and the largest Victorian cemetery in the world.
Having been established in 1867, today it is the final resting place for more than a million people.
Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Trust (RGCRT) is custodian to two-thirds of Rookwood Cemetery - an area of 190 hectares. The remainder is managed by the Catholic Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (CMCT) and the Rookwood Memorial Gardens and Crematorium.

HIDDEN 2023 Stonemasons Awards
Congratulations Sach Killam (Rookwood Stonemasons Award), Daniel Kilminster (Highly Commended, Rookwood Stonemasons Award), Daniel Tranter-Santoso (30-Year Anniversary Stonemasons Apprentice Award).
The judges said:
“Sach Killam’s level of commitment to actually carving a gothic decorated feature, a whole rose window, is quite a demonstration for a bank mason and carver. It's been beautifully executed, with details such as the winged hourglass - a lovely bit of symbolism in the setting of HIDDEN. It is a highly decorated piece and an excellent demonstration of a mason's skill.”
“Daniel Trento Santoso has concluded a rock-faced broken finish, which is a great reflection of the broken column, a type of carved symbolism often found in the cemetery setting.”

Good central vacant land for building. Fairytales and Golf courses. For the HOPEFULL DEAD and PAID UP. Put me in the GREEN BIN
Who makes this garbage up ??....cause i aint swallowing any of it !
The beautiful example of building of that time is still located adjacent to Central Station and was used as a function centre at one time. Funerals to Rookwood became more necessary after two central cemeteries were removed. One was at the now Town Hall area and the other was called Devonshire being located at Devonshire Street. The latter was excavated when Central Station was relocated / renovated from being nearer to Redfern. The Devonshire tunnel is a popular underpass at Central.
My grand parents are buried there
Any construction photos? Regent st station looks amazing if only WE built like this. Another inherited peice of infrastructure ❤ his story
Imagine getting run over by this train. Crook as Rookwood the old saying goes cheers.
Nice article. When rebuilt as a church in Canberra the station was mirror imaged.
The graves on the Anglican lawn directly in front of the eastern gates are a disgrace. The tree and bench were taken away machinery was driven all over the graves there and a monument was built and then removed so now it’s just left bare and the headstones are all out of alignment and some of them are broken it’s absolutely disgusting. Many of them are freemasons order of the eastern star and ex-military and some quite recent burials as well as plots that are owned by people who are still alive and are absolutely outraged and disgusted at how their future restingplace has turned out. I know this because I’m one of them. All of the videos and stories about how wonderful Rookwood is and the restoration of things in the artwork and right inside those front eastern gates on the Anglican lawn has been trashed by Rookwood it self and left in a disgraceful condition
We’re sorry to hear that your experience with Rookwood General Cemetery was not as expected. If you can provide details of your concerns, we will investigate the matter and look at ways we can improve our service. Please provide details to marketing@mmplm.com.au.
Oh boohoo, the graveyard I'm gonna be buried in isn't pretty enough. Not even the right place to complain.
@@MrLusciousmeat and my family are buried there.. pull your head in mate. Are your parents related?
Rook wood because of all the crows in the wooded area back in 19th century & still to this day
As the saying goes " l feel as crook as Rookwood " At least you could ride the train for nothing, just one small problem!!!!!!
Passed it for years on my way home from work. Scariest place at night.,

Did they get the idea for this, from the London Necropolis Railway. This used to take mourners, and corpses from London, to Brookwood Cemetery, with three classes of funeral. Passengers used to travel on the Necropolis Railway, because it was cheaper than using the regular train from the company that owned the railway that the Necropolis Railway used.
I'm dying to see it
My long gone mother would say when ill “ crook as Rookwood”
Very interesting I never knew this
Thank You for your interesting investigation. Rookwood must be a fascinating place to find stories.
Jewell of Architecture. And the Main, the Trains.
Passengers one shilling, corpses travel free ! 🤔🤣 Well made and educational -thanks ! 👌
Only problem with rookwood cemetery is that even with a map, it's a bloody pain in the arse to navigate.
In the 1930s during the depression , my old man lived in Lidcombe in a street that backed on to Rookwood. They used it a their playground, they would also wait until Chinese funerals were over and take the food that was left there as offerings.
There are still remnants left of the railway inside Rookwood Cemetery. There were 4 stations within and the platform and building base of no.3 can be seen behind the catholic office. You can even find a map of the railway layout.
Why is the Level Crossing ahead sign in the corner!? Not once have I really seen a level crossing in the video.
Corpses traveled free.😮
Crook as Rookwood .
So, no one bothered to visit Fathers on Father's Day then? Ive walked past the beautiful Regent St Station for 12 years. It never disappoints with its fine columns and masonry. It mustve seen so much grief over the years.
Fathers Day is always a Sunday (as is Mothers Day) so I'm not sure why they singled out Mothers Day. The train would run on Fathers Day too, being a Sunday.
MY GRANDFATHER AND MY GRAND MOTHER AT BROOKWOOD CEMETERY IN 1970 TIMES THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE VIDEO
lower case.
How come the non Catholic areas aren't looked after just as good
No mention of the graveyard established where Town Hall is now built? I know it wasn't there for long but it should get a mention.
Amazing history.
In early 1960s I worked as a fettler with a gang housed in the mortuary platform at central……..it had little historic or sentimental value then other than as a place to store junk. As a callow youth I thought little of it as I was very familiar with the mortuary platforms at Rookwood cemetery, which had also fallen into disrepair. In do remember that the tracks were still in place and the passenger platform at Rookwood still existed. One could easily trace the path of the Mortuary line after it branched off before Lidcombe. For many years the line was used to terminate and store yo-yo services between Lidcombe and Regents Park which ran as Four car sets in off-peak times. These were times of change and growth, retaining many links with the nineteenth century in terms of practise and custom. There was old stuff everywhere and not much of it was valued as heritage had not yet taken hold. Stavros, a skinny kid working for the railway!!! A good job in them days!!!
Good memory, good post, good job👍 Stay young mate.✌
Very interesting and educational.
this place will expand even faster after the vax roll out!
So you know the location of the Clarke brothers by any chance…?
The old saying I'm as Crook as Rookwood lol
The Photo @0:42 is of Devonshire St, looking up at the Sandhill's Cemetery, now Central Station.
I miss my Dad alot , he buried at Rookwood cemetery.
What a beaut video. Thankyou for sharing. I am very interested in rookwood and came here because my 3x grandmother is resting here somewhere. 🙏💜
Louisa Lawson FTW
Pésima la transición de imágenes. Muy molestas
very informative clip thank you!!
ive been to this cemetery couple time. The old graves is beautiful yet mysterious to look at but the bigger modern kerb or monumental headstones graves just seem ugly. Gives me a headache just walking through and looking at these headstones just placed together like slabs of granite
i am all for the multicultural expansion of rookwood, particularly the islamic section of the cemetery.
A lot of my family are in Rookwood
