We did the trip with a full size truck, but this rough 20 mile road is probably most often traveled with smaller ATV'S. We found the trip well worth the fishing, views, wildlife and fun road travel. @sagebrushcountry traverses all 90 miles of the Transcontinental Railroad National Back Country Byway. This beautifully remote byway follows the original 1869 Transcontinental railroad up around the Great Salt Lake from Promontory, Utah to Lucin, Utah. In 1903 the railroad was rerouted directly across the Great Salt Lake making this original route obsolete. The byway has information kiosks at t...
California's Remarkably Unique Mono Lake
Переглядів 707Рік тому
Mono Lake in Eastern California is a closed basin lake that makes it twice as salty as the Ocean. It's full of brine shrimp that feast on green algae, and waterfowl that eat the brine shrimp. Tufa limestone towers surround many parts of the shore. These towers developed underwater over underground springs, but since the lake level has been dropping for decades, (from water diversion by Southern...

Magnificent Solitude of Utah's Wah Wah Mountains
Переглядів 3,6 тис.Рік тому
The Wah Wah mountains in the west desert of Utah rise to over 9300 feet. They are named for the Wah Wah springs on the eastern slope of the mountains (which means good clear water). Only one paved road intersects the mountains, which leaves a whole lot of solitude to camp, hike and explore this remote area. It's all BLM land, so it's open to public recreation and remote enough you're likely to ...

Nice video! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the feedback!
❤ThankYou! Many, Many, Blessings ❤
Thank you
It has been many years since I last drove the steens man. I wonder why there are no ponderosa or lodgepole pine growing on the mountain?
They speculate the absence of Sub, Alpine conifers is because of how isolated the Steens are, so typical seed disperser birds did not have good access to them….
Tried to track your route on my Benchmark maps. Difficult. did not know what roads you were taking or what direction. Some of those roads I probably would not choose to travel on.
Some of the roads are not for the casual traveler, glad to share my ONX track with you if you’re really interested in my exact route….
Beautiful area!
Agreed!
Awesome video
Thanks for the feedback!
Another nice video. Thank you and keep it up
Thanks!
The green field is an airstrip, several of the ranch houses used to be and are hopefully going to again be rentable guesthouses by the BLM - we camped at the airstrip, later found 2 of the houses were open and we could have stayed in them. The rock house was the original Morrison Ranch house, Mr. Morrison gave his name to a unique jasper found in the area - mostly directly uphill from his house several thousand feet higher! I happened to walk by there, and found a cool rock in the road near his house; only after the trip found the history of the Morrisonite mining claims above the ranch. Two wheel drive not recommended, unless you have high clearance and time to wait for the road to dry out after rains!!
Wow, that’s great information, thanks for sharing!
Very nice work on this trip. Awesome scenery well documented
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good for my soul as well🎉
😎
Makes me crave a Ruby Mountain Pale Ale.
I took the kids on this route some years ago. We started at Jordan Valley and exited at Grandview. We camped at the North Fork campground, which was nice. I believe there are 4 or perhaps 5 sites, and they are spaced widely, to give privacy. While we didn't see many fish in the river, we greatly enjoyed seeing pairs of river otters working their way up and down from the bridge. There is a caution to not drive the road during periods of soaking rains. The clay composition of the road is such that it will become severely rutted, and the wheel wells of your vehicle will fill with clay, which sets up like concrete, trapping you. There is a large sign at the beginning with a message to effect of "if you get stuck, you won't be rescued" or something similar.
Thanks for the comment, sounds like you had a great trip!
We were coming from the north heading south, and I had heard some talk of a locked gate at the south entrance to the Butler wash Road side, didn’t want to take the chance.
Gotcha, my memory isn’t perfect, but I don’t remember being concerned about any the gates being locked that I went through….
Gotcha, my memory isn’t perfect, but I don’t remember being concerned about any of the gates being locked…..
A couple of friends and myself just ggot back from camping up at Knott Creel Reservoir, which is pretty close to Onion and Blue Lakes. I love the solitude of that entire area from Soldier Meadows Ranch up to Denio.
I’ve got to check that one out, thanks for the comment!
I just returned from 12 days in Eastern Oregon, spent two nights in the Steens, 9,600 feet elevation. My first visit there. Filled my rig with dust from gravel and dirt forest roads. Especially the Sunstone collection area and up into Christmas Valley. Fine brown dust, and lots of wind. Deschutes National forests roads, all dusty. Lot of fire damage too, every national forest I went through, miles and miles of burnt Pine forest. Some places the bigger trees looked OK, fire didn't get into the crowns. But other areas, with smaller, closer together trees, all burned. I could sit quietly, and hear the pine beetle larvae chewing from dozens of burned trees, piles of chewed up sawdust visible around nearly every tree. That was in the Malheur national forest, Aldrich mountains. I really enjoyed sagebrush country, the quiet, and the solitude. My low clearance vehicle did not enjoy some of the BLM two tracks I insisted we go exploring on, but I made it out OK. Definitely going back next year.
Wow, sounds like an epic trip! Glad you got some time in Sagebrush country…..😊
God, thank you for love and understanding and gentleness and caring throughout the earth. From the beginning of time to the end of days in Jesus mighty name. Amen 🙏
Thank you!
We opted for comb wash road instead. It’s on the west side. We were the only ones on the road and it was no problem, but does require four-wheel-drive in several areas of deep sand.
I’ve been up that side of the road years ago, I remember Comb ridge itself has a more dramatic view, but the advantage of the Butler Wash side is more assessability to Anasazi ruins. Would love to get back to either side of Comb Ridge again!
I enjoyed you video and subscribed. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome, thank you!
Outstanding, thanks for posting this video. The Bighorns are one of my favorite areas in all of the US that I have traveled, so far.
Yeah, I love the Big Horns as well, just don’t get up that way often enough….. thanks for your comment
Hopefully, the power structure in Utah will leave Bears Ears alone.
I agree!
I look forward to an episode that shows the east side of the mountain/fault block. Equally fantastic....Alvord Desert, Borax Lake, Fields, etc. - maybe you've already done one (?) ...did a bikecamping trip circumnavigating the mountain 2 years ago...wow! prettty fantastic!
Haven’t done a video for that country yet, but it’s on my list!
You are in Claude Dallas country. Worked with a former government coyote trapper who knew Claude many years ago in SE Oregon. I understand Claude is still alive and well. A living legend.
Don’t know much about Claude Dallas, so I’ll take your word for it….
Appreciate this look at a state I know little about...Pretty country! I love the vastness of our southwest states! Like you can drive off the edge of the earth... The Winters ranch was quite something - you're right, lotsa work on that one - consider dragging and hewing all those rock pieces! My gosh, that took serious determination. I always wonder what happened to these windswept, abandoned places: too hardscrabble, couldn't make a go of it? a death by one, forcing a move away by the other? Death by both, no heirs? or the heirs didn't want it? So, it's overtaken by time..... How marvelous to see the wild horses! Had to wonder if that one horse looking at you was just curious or had been with people, and possibly turned out...? Those roads are amazing, you clearly had confidence in your auto > ain't no AAA comin' to help you, should you need it :) I have to go find this area on my road atlas - so interesting!!! Thank you :)
That was a very thoughtful comment! Thanks for taking time to watch the video. I’m also fascinated by those old abandoned structures and wonder about the stories of people who lived there. As I mentioned in the video, that wild horse had just plain curious behavior, would love to know what it was up to, someone that knows horse behavior better than me could maybe speculate ….I’ve off-roaded a lot in my life with different kinds of vehicles, and have yet had a Toyota let me down, so I have a lot of confidence in my rig. 😎. Happy adventures.
I have been there multiple times. It is the most remote place I have ever been. Cherry Creek Canyon is🔥.
Agreed, it’s pretty remote country, looking forward to returning again someday!
Wow, wide open country. I wonder if so many wild horses limit the native Pronghorn Antelope population?
I think they have some impact on populations, however, antelope browse more than horses so they don’t directly compete for all the same habitat, which would help some with the carrying capacity of the rangeland..
Beautiful
I agree!
Did you need to pass through a gate at the South entry to the road, where you exit Hwy. 163? Thanks for the video BTW!!
It’s been a while, but I do remember a fence and a cattle guard. Don’t recollect having to open a gate though…… it’s a big wide-open road, so I don’t ever think access would be a problem.
I spent a year in Northern Nevada and relish memories of it and its people, wild horses, pronghorns, road runners & magpies 14:22 ; I enjoyed watching this ride.
NE colorado had its share of magpies. We had a chinese elm grove that they invaded with their nests. You just don't tear those nests from the trees. They are really built solid.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for riding along and letting me know!
A beautiful part of America. The isolation and silence is spectacular! Drove through there many years ago. Saw no body!!!!
You’ll be glad to know the silence is still there, waiting for your next visit…..
Beautiful country, photography and narrative. Thank you !
Thanks for the feedback!
I feel at home in country like that. Eastern Montana and western North Dakota is where. It looks like “nothing” to many. In the book, Travels With Charley, Steinbeck felt that the Badlands of North Dakota was a hellscape until night time. He changed his perspective then. There is so much life and beauty and danger in those landscapes.
Was just in the North Dakota, Badlands this summer, and really enjoyed it!
Classic basin and range.
Indeed!
First rule of the ION: NEVER pass an open gas station. Fantastic country! It's easy to imagine being out there on horseback in the 1800s, back when you didn't need roads OR gas.
Definitely in places like this, you appreciate every gas station!
I was raised in NE Colorado during the '40's and '50's. There is a somewhat similarity to the terrain. Colorado probably has a few more prickly pear cactus, but was about as open and desolate . probably not as big area wise. Northern Nebraska sandhills has a lot of wide open areas also. Just he same it is pretty desolate also.
Spent time in both of those landscapes, I especially enjoy the sandhills, they’re really unique and special…..
Great trip. I like the gentle pacing and music as well. This reminds me of the time about 1995 I took the road from Idaho through Silver City and then on to Jordan Valley. Did it on a lark with zero preparation. Made it through OK but I remember some spots the road was extremely rough.
Thanks for the feedback…sometimes those spontaneous trips are the best kind of adventures….
I love-hated your long follow of the mud-rut driver! Most of my experience has been back-roads in the snow, but I chuckled at the thought, one thing that dude was not going to do was stop! That was a kamikaze run! :)
Yeah, that’s why it got my attention, thanks for noticing…..kept going for an even a lot longer than I showed on film!
Love the choice of scenery every time. The more remote the better.
Thanks!
Looks like Claud Dallas country.
😏
I was thinking the same thing. Worked with a government coyote trapper from the old days that knew Claude in SE Oregon many years ago I understand Claude is still alive and doing well. A living legend.
67, bad knees and health up and down. Thank you for bringing us to beautiful places some of us can no longer travel to.
Thanks for reaching out!
Lake Bonneville
Very interesting. Thanks for taking me along for the ride!
Glad you enjoyed it
@@sagebrushcountry I visited Great Basin National Park last year, my first time to Nevada, being from the South. I loved the wild lonesome country, so quiet and peaceful and desolate.
Just remember that most all this land is BLM. And you can't buy it. Camping time is limited and wilderness forbids motorized anything.
You’re right, most federal land has a maximum two week camping limit for each spot
You need to Vary your music, My god how can you expect anyone to listen to that same stuff over and over and over and over ? ? ?
Ouch....first to admit I'm a rookie....but at least you watched long enough to figure out the music...🙂
I visited the Henry mountains about five years ago, in Fall, shortly before the hunting season. (I'm not a hunter, but hunters were scouting spots). It is pretty amazing to see a over a hundred buffalo, grazing near the upper peaks, but on the opposite (west?) side of the pass. I was surprised to learn that a limited number of tags are issued to hunt buffalo.
Cool you got to see the buffalo....would have liked to see some myself...
Would have liked less music and more meadowlark.
Gotcha
It is absolutely beautiful up there. So happy I made it up there last year.
Isn't that a cool place, need to get back there myself again!
I’m very new to your channel…..could you possibly do a video about how you should prepare for back woods travel like you do?
Welcome to the channel....I'll keep that in mind. In this video you just watched I talk a bit about that at first, but probably need to address it even more - thanks
BIG DEAL, NEVADA IS A DRY STATE AND THE PINES ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN
That's what makes them so fun to find....🙂
Thanks for this video. I was there some years ago now and enjoyed it. It was too late in the year to hike to Blue b/c snow was in the offing. Sorry that I missed that hike. OVR was closed to all fishing a couple of years back. I heard from BLM sources that it was due to high mercury content. At times when fishing was allowed, there were stern warnings about eating any fish and severe restrictions recommended on same. There's another reservoir close(ish) to there that also had the mercury problem. I don't know the current status on that.
Thanks for the info....makes be feel better about not fishing it while I was there..🙂
There’s a video on a UA-cam channel called softroadingthewest and he went by the Chevy that’s off the road. But in his video you can see the snow drift that they slid off of.
That's really interesting, thanks for pointing that out. Fun fact, my video was shot last fall, and it looks like his was shot early summer this year, so that means that truck was left there all winter. Makes one wonder how they will get it out - looks to be a really tough task....
