Ceramic Glaze Study- Blue vs Brown Question (2019)
Cone Blue Pottery shows how to address a ceramic glaze problem faced by a local potter. She was producing both brown and blue plates in her wood kiln in the same firing with the same clay and glaze. She wanted only blue plates to fill a large restaurant order in her next wood firing.
The approach taken is one commonly applied to quality control issues for industrial problems. Namely, the use of a fishbone diagram to establish what experiments to run to determine root cause factors leading to the production of both blue and brown plates in the same firing. In this video, experiments are designed and executed against each potential root cause to determine if they are or are not probable root causes. The experiments result in 3 recommendations for the potter to follow in her next wood firing. As a result, she achieved 100% blue plates and was able to ship her entire order to the restaurant.
Ceramic glaze research and development are the mainstay of Cone Blue Pottery. More details can be found on the website ConeBluePottery.com. “Ceramic Glaze Study- Blue vs Brown Question (2019)” is a closed caption video produced using Cyberlink Power Director software.

Converting a Kiln from Electric to Gas (2019)
Переглядів 4,5 тис.5 років тому
Cone Blue Pottery shows how to design and construct a small propane fired kiln for firing pottery in oxidation and reduction environments. Ceramic glaze research and development are the mainstay of Cone Blue Pottery. More details can be found on the website ConeBluePottery.com. Potters often have trouble cutting gas ports of precise size into the sides of a kiln during a kiln conversion; the pr...

Would you use this same method for converting it into a gas forge for melting metal?

Great video with detailed, useful, explanation. The music, however, was too loud and distracting. What was meant to be a background music ended up overwhelming the video. I believe the video content would have been better without the music.

Thank you for pointing this out, I went back and viewed the video and I agree with you. Unfortunately the software version I used to make this video automatically set the levels of the voice and music. For my next video, I will upgrade the software to prevent this issue in the future. Thanks again.

Could you use your burner for Raku also?

Catherine, the Ward B2 venturi burner (in this video) has an output of 14,800 - 66,400 BTU at 0-20psi propane which is very similar to the typical Raku burners output of 17,490 - 78,440 BTU at 0-20psi. So, it's useable for Raku.

Thank you very much for taking your time to make such a clear explanation. Well, right now I also had a similar problem with a certain Chung enamel that I had not used for some time. In my case the problem that was not blue was the lack of sufficient temperature and the reduction. They are enamels that do not have coloring oxide like cobalt, the blue is produced by crystallization and only the blue comes out well with strong reduction, and a good layer of enamel and from 1280º. In my case I had not reached the temperature. The light came to me when you saw your video in the image of the Yin dynasty dishes. Thanks again!

Thank you very much for your kind comment. I'm please to see it helped you achieve the glaze results you were looking for. There is nothing more frustrating to a potter than having a glaze that worked well suddenly change into an undesirable color with no hint at what might have caused the issue. I will send you a private note with additional information on the effort behind the Yin dynasty dish glaze in this video since it's similar to the enamel you are working with. Regards

Hello there, live the clear explanation of your video. I'm wondering if your burner is enough for a skutt 181? I'm debating on weedburners, since there toooo loud. Thank you for the video.

I suggest you send an email to info@wardburner.com with your kiln information (size of chamber/peak temp/gas type you plan to use etc.). They could tell you if the burner I used in my video would work for your specific kiln and gas source. If it's not the right size, they could recommend an appropriate sized burner for your kiln. Other burner manufacturers would likely do the same. I would recommend Frederick L. Olsen's book "The Kiln Book" (ISBN 0-8019-7071-7) if you want to understand the details behind kiln designs. Good luck with your kiln project.
