Ok, good to know!! I might have had those a while back because I did have a lovely variety that grew beautifully but I’ve had so much calendula seed from years past I’ve been trying to use it all up! I might have to get some of that variety! I LOVE calendula so much

Good for you for starting your own lisi seeds!!! I honestly commend anyone who does because they are a job but they are so worth it!! This will be my 3rd season growing them coming up but I ordered plugs rather than seeding myself. I just don’t have the time for them and have so many other things I love to start! I think you are smart to get them started December 1 because I also found the 1st year I grew them and started them, I could have started much earlier than I did! Hey, very exciting for you to be doing flowers for a wedding! I did flowers for a wedding in the early part of July this past summer and I had quite a variety ready by then. For blue I had bachelors buttons, i succession plant them all season to have them constantly growing. I also had snapdragons, soapwort, salvia, ranunculus. Are you able to start any seeds indoors? Yes the window is just not sufficient lighting for most seeds. The sunlight is too filtered through the glass and the plants always seem to strain toward what light does come in. Good plan on waiting to see if it’s worth it for you to purchase one. There are many affordable options to even just try one light. Wildflower seeds should come back and then if you let some self seed, they will return year after year. I have wildflowers all over my garden and I love how it’s a surprise every year as to what’s coming back! Yay, to the nursery doing that! I think most garden/plant people want to support each other and see them be successful! Sounds like it’s shaping up to be a great year for you!!

Yes they were coming for a visit and some pets! I haven’t really seen them much because they were out in pasture since the spring so it’s always fun to see them all winter long.

This is our misfit herd, some of them I raised from bottle, some were born and froze their ears or hooves, we got the dairy cow to raise some calves that were twins and their mom couldn’t manage 2 so they are all pretty used to me being around! my partner is a softie and has to keep them all! It’s not quite the same with our main herd! They will take a bit to warm up to me again after the summer out at pasture but they will come around! 😊 I am so grateful for the cow visits! I truly love them all!

Yes to that!!! I did use spinach once it bolted, it looked pretty cool!! I think we should normalize more of that!! I wonder what other food plants would work good?? Maybe Swiss chard, The rainbow stuff? Beet leaves? Have you tried anything else that not necessarily a cut flower or regular foliage?

Is that similar to fusarium wilt? I’ve not heard of asters wilt before. There were definitely a couple things going on with my statice this year so it’s entirely possible it was the aster wilt.

I guess it’s actually aster yellows. Next spring I will be using row cover on my asters. This is my last resort. I have found in other cases if I use row cover for insects on crops that are really affected by flying creatures not earwigs or slugs I have a greater chance of success. The asters take a worse beating than the statice. My statice is only affected late in the year and I don’t lose a lot of stems. Asters on the other hand get totally wiped out. I just pull them out as they start wilting and before you know it there are none left 🥲 This is from Google lol Overview . aster yellows can affect statice: What is aster yellows? A chronic disease caused by a mycoplasma-like organism that affects a wide range of plants, including flowers, vegetables, and weeds How it affects statice Statice, a perennial flower, can be damaged by aster yellows. Other plants affected by aster yellows Many other flowers, including asters, marigolds, coneflowers, and zinnias, can also be affected by aster yellows. Symptoms vary Symptoms of aster yellows can vary depending on the plant, the strain of the phytoplasma, and the age or size of the plant when it was infected. How it spreads The aster leafhopper is considered the primary vector of aster yellows. Damage in the garden may be patchy or spotty because it spreads where insects feed.

I have grown those, they were decent this year. I just need to grow more of them but you’re right those are a good replacement for the paper daisy.

I tried those bags and they were not helpful at all! I’m not sure if it was my timing at getting them on, or if there was something else going on too. But I stopped using them and things bounced back after the evenings got colder.

@@ilenehales7849 I find organza bags work 100% on my dahlias for earwigs. They will do the same for Japanese Beetles which unfortunately have found my corner of the universe.

I start them about 6 or so weeks before our last frost sooo off the top of my head I’m thinking I started them in end of march beginning of April

@ ooops. I meant you’ll have calendula for life. Mine has come back in various places around the garden for 10 years now. It’s kind of near because you can select for traits that you like such as doubles or color and pull the rest. I winter-sowed the mignonette outside. It’s the lazy-woman’s way to do it

Ohh ok got ya! Yes I already have calendula popping up all over!! I love it! I also have lots of volunteer sunflowers and they all just bring me so much joy!! Can I ask what zone you’re in? I wonder if I could plant in the fall for spring crop too? It’s a bit late for me now but if I don’t have success this year maybe I’ll try that too!

@ I’m in zone 6b and really have never messed around too much with fall planting except for perennials and biennials. I don’t have a light setup so I rely on self-seeders and winter sowing (which can be done in any zone). Have never had much luck intentionally direct sowing plants because eventually I lose to weeds but I have set up an area to direct sow very close which then will get moved to their forever homes. I call them nursery beds

Ok, I understand! I do have a small grow light set up that I start quite a bit under. I do order some plugs and liners from wholesale suppliers and a lot of direct sowing. It’s a whole mixed bag but I am just learning still and am aware i have a lot more to learn!

I would love to hear how you make out with the ones you’re going to try? I don’t know a whole big bunch about tulips but I am curious to know how you make out! I wish they made more sense to grow but they just don’t for me and what I do but you never know they might make an appearance sometime down the road again!

@@outgrowin I waited too long to pull the bulbs after the foliage died off this year and many were rotted but I did get quite a few that were around 12cm which means they would produce a good bloom the next year. I just bought a bulk mixed Darwin/Fosteriana crate but most stems were 14-18 inches even leaving the bottom foliage so I call that a win. A lot of the bulbs had divided into 4 small bulblets which I expect will take a couple of years to size up so I think sustainability would take multiple years to build up stock and get a repeating cycle. I have the luxury of space to play around with and time to wait for them to size up.

So when I was picking my tulips I would pull them out bulb and all, and even then the bulbs had started to multiply. But you definitely gave me some good information! For the tulips that didn’t amount to much, I left them in the ground until the fall because I didn’t have time to deal with them and yes they had all either multiplied into very small bulbs or rotted out!! It might have been best to dig them up and then replant in the fall.

No, I never have. In fact never even heard to do this before?? Is that what you do? I would love to know the why to this? I have been growing garlic for about 10 years quite successfully by just planting in the ground as is.

This year I planted after frost. I would say most years I do plant after frost but no real reason other than that’s when I have the time. To be honest I have planted when the ground was close to frozen and my garlic still grew. I don’t recommend that but garlic is hardier than we give it credit for.

Ok very interesting, I would think you should be able to grow them too! Maybe your light or soil isn’t good enough?? Or no pollination, maybe you could manually pollination the plants? Do they set fruit and just not grow? Or do they just flower and not turn into fruit?

Amazing! Yes actually I’ve taken most of the prairie horticulture program from Usask so I am quite familiar what some of what goes on there, they definitely have a wealth of information for growers! I have never made it to one of the sales but would love to one day!

The program is all online for the prairie Hort certification so I didn’t get to play in the garden but I bet that would be amazing to see! Ya I didn’t wash anything, it seems counterproductive for sure! But ya I’m curious how other people have such clean garlic!?? My sister got the crates in Invermere, Bc. 😊.
