Out Growin'
Приєднався 24 чер 2022
Hey everyone, my name is Krista and I am a small town gal from Southern Saskatchewan, Canada that loves growing all things. Not only am I big believer in continually growin' as a person in this magnificent world we live in, I love growin' veggies and more recently cut flowers.
3 years ago I met the fellow of my dreams (Mark) who is a cattle rancher and grain farmer that conveniently created a beautiful garden space for me at the Ranch. The garden is my happy place. The dirt keeps me grounded, the growth of new life continually inspires and reminds me that growth is an essential part of life, and the fruits of our labour are the celebration of what a little hard work and nature can provide.
My hope is to share my absolute love for the simple life we are creating together while fostering a community of like minded individuals.
Not only will you see the trials and tribulations of market gardening, you will also see some ranch and farm life too!
I hope you enjoy!

Going to check on the garden and mainly the garlic snow cover!! Because I don’t use a mulch on my garlic, it is imperative to have decent snow cover to insulate the crop! Last year at this time we didn’t have any snow, and hardly had any all year! That definitely could have been impactful on my poor crop this past season. The cows only came back to the yard 2 weeks ago so naturally we have to g...

When I buy store bought flowers I always snip the ends and remove all greenery that might be below the water surface! I also remove broken stems, damaged flowers & leaves and refresh the water every couple days. When I refresh the water I snip a little off the ends as well to remove any bacterial that might be growing in the stems! #flowers #flower #freshflowerarragement

Veseys sells seeds for a Fruit Burst Calendula that work nice for floral bouquets I find them taller than other varieties and stems a bit straighter too.
Ok, good to know!! I might have had those a while back because I did have a lovely variety that grew beautifully but I’ve had so much calendula seed from years past I’ve been trying to use it all up! I might have to get some of that variety! I LOVE calendula so much
Who is this strange woman talking to a cow? Anyways, hope you had a nice Christmas!
🤣🤣 I’m always taking or singing to the cows, it keeps them calm, that’s how I get to pet them 🙃 Hope you had a lovely Christmas too! 🎄
Thanks for sharing!! Your videos always look so nice and are well done!!
Thank you so much!! I appreciate the feedback because I feel quite new at the whole UA-cam thing still! 😊
I love your cat 😊
Why thank ya! His name is Texas and he loves to be in all the action! 😻
I totally agree w you about some of what you said about seeding ur own Lisianthus. This is my 3 rd year seeding them and year one was great, but year two they got too hot in my grow room and lots dried up and died. Since then I’ve learned they prefer to grow in cooler temps, and kept moist but not wet, & don’t let them dry out, and have a lot of patience😳! This year I’m growing Lavendar, Red and Brown. 75 of each ( hopefully ) Germination was pretty good but hard to see exactly as very tiny, using a purple grow bulb ( obscures green seedling colour ) but it looks like lots of lavendar, red and maybe not as many brown? As well they are out of my brow room and on my cooler dining table. I’m hopeful but I’m a senior lady w mobility issues w lots of spare time! As well I seeded them Dec 1 ( last year Feb 3 ( too late ) and year 1 I bought plugs! Could be why it was my best year! Anyway it’s very rewarding starting my own lisianthus seeds. Ask me in the spring if that’s still the case haha . First time watcher! Happy to see another zone 3 gardener!
Good for you for starting your own lisi seeds!!! I honestly commend anyone who does because they are a job but they are so worth it!! This will be my 3rd season growing them coming up but I ordered plugs rather than seeding myself. I just don’t have the time for them and have so many other things I love to start! I think you are smart to get them started December 1 because I also found the 1st year I grew them and started them, I could have started much earlier than I did! Happy growing and thank you for joining in! 😊 lovely to see another zone 3 gardener
Definitely Tulips are something you need to harvest several times a,day and then refrigerate. It doesn't work otherwise. I grow 6,500 every year and it definitely is a full-time job. Love from Ireland as always ❤
Absolutely! Tulips are a whole other thing lol! They are definitely not for me at this time as I am only half time at the ranch/farm where the garden is! Good for you on growing them! How long have you been growing for?? You certainly have it down to a science!! Thank you for your information and comments they are so greatly appreciated 🙏
Garden Gathered is the look. Its got movement and texture. Its exactly what I do. Watching from Ireland ❤
Yes, garden gathered! Love that!! Thank you so much and welcome to my channel! 😊
I am sorry for your loss xoxo
Thank you so much!
Hello, I live in zone 3 and I'm planning to grow wedding flowers for a early July wedding. The bride wants the colors blue and red. What could I grow in my home garden that would bloom first week of July? In terms of annuals I'll definately direct sow some of that phacelia you mentioned! Anything else you'd recommend ?
Hey, very exciting for you to be doing flowers for a wedding! I did flowers for a wedding in the early part of July this past summer and I had quite a variety ready by then. For blue I had bachelors buttons, i succession plant them all season to have them constantly growing. I also had snapdragons, soapwort, salvia, ranunculus. Are you able to start any seeds indoors? Or direct sowing all? Here is the link to them on my instagram. instagram.com/share/BABgoqilHM
I dream to have a homestead one day.
What a beautiful dream to have! I hope for it to come true for you sooner than later!!
It’s so true that you need a good light setup. Mine got leggy last time and died. With window method. I have some saved seeds from plants that I will use to learn this year and invest in just one good light to see if it is worth it for me. I also sprinkled some seeds around in a wildflower area that I have so that would be amazing I they came up next spring 😄Aside from that I talked to my local nursery and they are willing to start plugs too so that’s an option. Here’s to a good lisi year!😅
Yes the window is just not sufficient lighting for most seeds. The sunlight is too filtered through the glass and the plants always seem to strain toward what light does come in. Good plan on waiting to see if it’s worth it for you to purchase one. There are many affordable options to even just try one light. Wildflower seeds should come back and then if you let some self seed, they will return year after year. I have wildflowers all over my garden and I love how it’s a surprise every year as to what’s coming back! Yay, to the nursery doing that! I think most garden/plant people want to support each other and see them be successful! Sounds like it’s shaping up to be a great year for you!!
Are they waiting in line for pets?
Yes they were coming for a visit and some pets! I haven’t really seen them much because they were out in pasture since the spring so it’s always fun to see them all winter long.
@outgrowin it's just cute to see their faces saying come on its my turn. Oh look it's suzie(random name) up there with her kids you know I'll be out here all day waiting for My kiss haha. It's adorable no one is pushing and shoving. You're lucky you get that much of a crowd waiting to see you ❤️
Thank you so much!! This is our misfit herd, some of them I raised from bottle, some were born and froze their ears or hooves, we got the dairy cow to raise some calves that were twins and their mom couldn’t manage 2 so they are all pretty used to me being around! my partner is a softie and has to keep them all! It’s not quite the same with our main herd! They will take a bit to warm up to me again after the summer out at pasture but they will come around! 😊 I am so grateful for the cow visits! I truly love them all!
❤❤
I am no expert as its only the 3rd year I've saved my tubers. I would suggest following Dahlia Mandrew he put out a few videos about dividing that I found really helpful. Bonus he is Canadian!
Ok great!! Thank you, I will definitely go give a follow, I’m hopeful to do some splitting at the end of this coming season so I’ll take all the help I can get!! I greatly appreciate your comment! 😊
I loved using volunteer cherry tomatoes in my bouquets this summer! My volunteer tomatillos got a little too bug eaten to use very much.
Yes to that!!! I did use spinach once it bolted, it looked pretty cool!! I think we should normalize more of that!! I wonder what other food plants would work good?? Maybe Swiss chard, The rainbow stuff? Beet leaves? Have you tried anything else that not necessarily a cut flower or regular foliage?
@outgrowin radish flowers and seed pods were pretty, too. I'll have to try spinach.
Good call! I always have plenty of those that go to seed!
The statice had aster wilt at least that’s what I was told!
Is that similar to fusarium wilt? I’ve not heard of asters wilt before. There were definitely a couple things going on with my statice this year so it’s entirely possible it was the aster wilt.
I guess it’s actually aster yellows. Next spring I will be using row cover on my asters. This is my last resort. I have found in other cases if I use row cover for insects on crops that are really affected by flying creatures not earwigs or slugs I have a greater chance of success. The asters take a worse beating than the statice. My statice is only affected late in the year and I don’t lose a lot of stems. Asters on the other hand get totally wiped out. I just pull them out as they start wilting and before you know it there are none left 🥲 This is from Google lol Overview . aster yellows can affect statice: What is aster yellows? A chronic disease caused by a mycoplasma-like organism that affects a wide range of plants, including flowers, vegetables, and weeds How it affects statice Statice, a perennial flower, can be damaged by aster yellows. Symptoms may include leaf reddening and yellowing. Other plants affected by aster yellows Many other flowers, including asters, marigolds, coneflowers, and zinnias, can also be affected by aster yellows. Symptoms vary Symptoms of aster yellows can vary depending on the plant, the strain of the phytoplasma, and the age or size of the plant when it was infected. How it spreads The aster leafhopper is considered the primary vector of aster yellows. Damage in the garden may be patchy or spotty because it spreads where insects feed.
Johnny seeds do not tell you if they need stratification. Ilook each seed variety up anf stratify them a month before growing. You may want to do that too. 😊 I bought seeds ftom Eden Brothers and they said to stratify. I wish other companies added that to their packets.
That is a great tip! Thank you! I didn’t really think of that but I’m definitely going to this year for sure! I haven’t heard of Eden brothers before but I will check them out too! I appreciate your advice!!😊
15:15 I would try the Persian cress again if I were you. I direct sowed 4 weeks before my last frost (zone 5b) and it germinated and grew 4 ft tall.
Could also try strawflowers instead of paper daisy’s
Really??? Perhaps the stuff i planted that didn’t germinate will come up this year?? I absolutely adore the look of it so thank you for your encouragement! I will definitely try again!
I have grown those, they were decent this year. I just need to grow more of them but you’re right those are a good replacement for the paper daisy.
What was the name of #5 on your surprise list
It’s Phacelia 😊
Thrips are awful. Large organza bags, put over the buds of dahlias help with the bug pressure.
I tried those bags and they were not helpful at all! I’m not sure if it was my timing at getting them on, or if there was something else going on too. But I stopped using them and things bounced back after the evenings got colder.
I had the same results, they helped only some of the time @@outgrowin
I’m glad to hear that because I was wondering if there was something more going on.
@@ilenehales7849 I find organza bags work 100% on my dahlias for earwigs. They will do the same for Japanese Beetles which unfortunately have found my corner of the universe.
When do you start your Asters ?
I start them about 6 or so weeks before our last frost sooo off the top of my head I’m thinking I started them in end of march beginning of April
Coupla notes! Love the video. I winter sowed mignonette and it did good but then I never transplanted it so it was a fail for me. You’ll now have celosia for the rest of your life!!!very cool that you are not giving up on most but completely understandable about expensive tulips
Thank you so much!! So did you sow the mignonette indoors under light?? And I’m not sure what you mean that I’ll have celosia for life now?? Is mignonette a part of the celosia family? I’m not super familiar with it as it was my first time growing it but I love the idea of it and definitely hope for some volunteer to pop up! Thanks for sharing your experience I’m going to look into it further for this coming year for sure!!😊
@ ooops. I meant you’ll have calendula for life. Mine has come back in various places around the garden for 10 years now. It’s kind of near because you can select for traits that you like such as doubles or color and pull the rest. I winter-sowed the mignonette outside. It’s the lazy-woman’s way to do it
Ohh ok got ya! Yes I already have calendula popping up all over!! I love it! I also have lots of volunteer sunflowers and they all just bring me so much joy!! Can I ask what zone you’re in? I wonder if I could plant in the fall for spring crop too? It’s a bit late for me now but if I don’t have success this year maybe I’ll try that too!
@ I’m in zone 6b and really have never messed around too much with fall planting except for perennials and biennials. I don’t have a light setup so I rely on self-seeders and winter sowing (which can be done in any zone). Have never had much luck intentionally direct sowing plants because eventually I lose to weeds but I have set up an area to direct sow very close which then will get moved to their forever homes. I call them nursery beds
Ok, I understand! I do have a small grow light set up that I start quite a bit under. I do order some plugs and liners from wholesale suppliers and a lot of direct sowing. It’s a whole mixed bag but I am just learning still and am aware i have a lot more to learn!
I’ve never grown asters before, but Johnny’s Seeds has this recommendation: “Row cover or insect netting helps prevent the spread of Aster Yellows Virus by leafhoppers.” I don’t know if that is helpful or practical, but I thought I would throw it out there. Cute kitty!
Good tips, Thank you! Johnnys has so much wonderful information! And thank you about the kitty! 😊 he gets away with a lot because he’s so dang cute hahha
Did you grow feverfew as a daisy type flower?
I haven’t but it is definitely on my list! It was on my list last year and I somehow missed getting seeds and by the time garden season rolled around I figured I had enough! I will definitely order it this year! Have you grown it before? Any hot tips for growing it?
I agree. Tulips are unsustainable and not environmentally healthy. I’m experimenting with using the perennial taller types like Darwin that you can get decent stem length from and still leave lower leaves to regenerate the bulb. The problem with singles is that you need foliage at a time when there is not much so I’m also experimenting with forcing apple blossoms to pair with them
Not sustainable or healthy as currently used in the cut flower world that is
I would love to hear how you make out with the ones you’re going to try? I don’t know a whole big bunch about tulips but I am curious to know how you make out! I wish they made more sense to grow but they just don’t for me and what I do but you never know they might make an appearance sometime down the road again!
@@outgrowin I waited too long to pull the bulbs after the foliage died off this year and many were rotted but I did get quite a few that were around 12cm which means they would produce a good bloom the next year. I just bought a bulk mixed Darwin/Fosteriana crate but most stems were 14-18 inches even leaving the bottom foliage so I call that a win. A lot of the bulbs had divided into 4 small bulblets which I expect will take a couple of years to size up so I think sustainability would take multiple years to build up stock and get a repeating cycle. I have the luxury of space to play around with and time to wait for them to size up.
So when I was picking my tulips I would pull them out bulb and all, and even then the bulbs had started to multiply. But you definitely gave me some good information! For the tulips that didn’t amount to much, I left them in the ground until the fall because I didn’t have time to deal with them and yes they had all either multiplied into very small bulbs or rotted out!! It might have been best to dig them up and then replant in the fall.
Have you ever tried 1 tbsp baking soda in 1 gallon water pre soak? Or a rinse in hydrogen peroxide? Before planting.
No, I never have. In fact never even heard to do this before?? Is that what you do? I would love to know the why to this? I have been growing garlic for about 10 years quite successfully by just planting in the ground as is.
Do you plant before or after your first frost?
This year I planted after frost. I would say most years I do plant after frost but no real reason other than that’s when I have the time. To be honest I have planted when the ground was close to frozen and my garlic still grew. I don’t recommend that but garlic is hardier than we give it credit for.
@@outgrowin I read about the baking soda soak fro Hickorycroft farm near Kingston, they plant 2000 plus
Oh very interesting. I’ve never hear that before. But I believe everyone has what works for them and that’s the beauty of gardening! So much to learn!
Haha!!.... Black Krim, Cherokee Purple, Carbon, and Black Prince...
Yum! I haven’t grown any of those other ones but I think I might try! Any that you absolutely recommend?
@@outgrowin - So many varieties of tomato to grow and so little time to grow them... I would grow at least one of each in your garden next year... You'll be happy that you did...
Amazing! I will have to try some! A friend of mine started all kinds of heirloom tomatoes so i usually get whatever he had but I might have to try a few of your recommendations for sure
It’s beautiful!
Thanks friend!!💕💕
That is so gorgeous!! Wow!!
Thank you so much! I’m really enjoying the world of watercolor! 😊
Have you tried carrot tops in your bouquets?
I haven’t yet. I have thought about it but I’m not sure they would be long enough for my bouquets, but they would be fabulous in an arrangement!
How exciting!
Yes! They are so good! I’m so impressed and can’t wait to try growing more next year!
@@outgrowin I’ve never had luck with growing melon, but I am determined next year!
Yes definitely have to keep trying! What zone are you in? I was so impressed and the flavour is so good
@@outgrowin I’m in zone 9b! My dad who lives a few blocks away has no problem with melon!
Ok very interesting, I would think you should be able to grow them too! Maybe your light or soil isn’t good enough?? Or no pollination, maybe you could manually pollination the plants? Do they set fruit and just not grow? Or do they just flower and not turn into fruit?
what a great melon patch you have. those look soooo good
Thank you so much! 😊 They have turned out delicious!! I can’t wait to try more next year!
I am so excited for watermelons too!! Started too late here, and the vines weren't happy and didn't start actually growing until the end of August 😂 not even flowering yet!! Gardening at usask has a nice list of cultivars from their earlier studies and north Dakota's university!! I plan om trying to find some cream of saskatchewan watermelon seeds, it's a white one amd looks fun!! Cultivated in Manitoba so should do decent as well!!
Oh wow!! This is some great information! Thank you so much!! I’m still holding hope to get 1 watermelon off one of my plants, but yes I definitely want to try more next year! What zone are you in or where are you located?
@@outgrowin Your watermelon did look really nice, hope you luck out and get to enjoy it!! No worries, I hope it helps some!! Usask is a good resource, and their spring sale is pretty awesome too!! About an hour give or take north of you!!
Amazing! Yes actually I’ve taken most of the prairie horticulture program from Usask so I am quite familiar what some of what goes on there, they definitely have a wealth of information for growers! I have never made it to one of the sales but would love to one day!
@@outgrowin Oh that's really awesome, good job!! It must have been fun playing in their garden!! It is definitely worth the drive!! Especially when they do online pre-order, make it feel like less of a gamble lol!!
The program is all online for the prairie Hort certification so I didn’t get to play in the garden but I bet that would be amazing to see! I’m for sure going to look into their plant sale for next season! Thanks for filling me in. It’s about a 2 hour drive so it’s good to know you can pre order! So exciting!
