Liverpool Street Scenes 1901

A truly fascinating film from 120 years ago, showing an extremely busy town centre. The opening sequence shows a new car being driven out of the William Lea Motor Car Depot of 16-18 Berry Street. Then a glimpse of the Compton Hotel on Church Street, before it became Marks and Spencer. There's a long shot of Bunney's on the corner of Church Street and Whitechapel. Mackenzie's Jewellers having an...

❤️ love from birkenhead
'Mersey' Mick sounds like he comes from West Kirby !
No houses with cameras outside, everyone left their front doors open back then. Now everyone is scared of their next door neighbour robbing them, or that's what the propaganda in the media is trying to make people think.
before cars infested life in its totality
From Eastham...loved the video.Alan
So sad what wirral has become with the influx of pondlfe
Brilliant.
Ride my horse through burton, the traffic not to bad
When birko wasnt just full of tramps and people injecting
Brilliant film! I was keeping an eye out during the cycle race and wondering was my Great Uncle Don (Donald Spraggett, Birkenhead North End Team) riding there. I know he was very active back then and I believe some of his time trial records stood for a very long time. He may have passed away a long time ago but he's not forgotten. And in answer to one of the other comments Wirral was Cheshire until 1974, I was made in Cheshire but born in Merseyside, without leaving the village. Beautiful to see it in colour, thank you.
I ride round the wirral and know a few BNEC lads, it's fascinating to see it go back that far! Nice to know people realised how good the wirral is for riding, even back then!
Snowy, Snowy! You can see my house on here!
Good film...........What is the race , Tour de Wirral ? and the top three ?
People from The Wirral are just 'posh' Scousers. That means they take the dishes out of the sink before they pi55 in it. 🙂
Wasn't there bad fires in parkgate recently
Fire was on the marsh, was bad and near some houses. But from ariel film it doesn't look that big an area fortunately, arson by kids as expected. Good hiding old school wouldn't do anything like it again , put fear of God into em.
No uPVC- before the ugliness started.
I know, every window and door is white uPVC, either white or it's those drab grey windows you see popping up all over the place now. Why would anyone want grey windows on their house? I suppose it's all down to the companies who make them and sell them, when someone buys something everyone else copies them. Even garden furniture like sheds and garden fences seem to be painted in that drab grey colour now as if there is only one colour of garden paint you can buy in the shops. And another thing we didn't need back then was CCTV cameras outside peoples homes. Again, I feel this is down to the companies who make and sell the things, if they didn't noone would be able to buy the damn thing and made to feel like their home needs to be under 24/7 video surveillance, I doubt anyone bothers to check their video recordings, plus the police do bugger all about it anyway. To think back then people left their front doors open, now everyone acts like their home is Fort Knox. This cannot be good for the community people living in fear of being burgled and being made to be suspicious of their neighbours. I feel this is all deliberate to break down and destroy society.

Some great footage.👍
WOW
Parkgate. Very interesting place 👍. Thank you for sharing.
Considering this is the 1940s and 50s, the video should be on the 'Cheshire in Focus' channel...
Wirral is part of Merseyside . .
@@merseysideinfocus9427 Wirral joined Merseyside in the 1970s, before that it was part of Cheshire.
When Wirral had good roads! Nice film
Standards
Fireball and ouzo don't mix
Not all of the scenes, some look like circa 1950.
The army scenes at St George's Plateau are 1915, New Brighton 1920s. The lads arriving in Liverpool were part of the Liverpool Education Committee's Williamson Hostel farm migration scheme. They were preparing to be shipped abroad to start new lives. This was also filmed in the 1920s. The beach ladies fashions are a clue, as is the truck at Lime Street Station . . . .
