This track is called Kickflips, it originally appeared on our first record “Speaking In Absolutes.” We made this ska version during quarantine. Lyrics: I hope you're not ready to sleep 'Cause my eyes are wide and hey, Adventure is waiting You'll find us here tonight Keeping spirits high Chasing dreams in vans Along double yellow lines I haven't seen the lights Of my hometown in days I'm a stran...

Nice, fellas! 🇧🇷
🫶🤟
I’m the drummer for Flyborne! Y’all were so good!!! What I wouldn’t pay too play with y’all again!
Great work!
HE'LL YEAHGH! BORTHER!!
Dawg, you getting a freaking KILLER snare sound here -What are you doing besides the Evans heavyweight head?? Any processing/ samples??
Hey thanks! No samples used here, it's all from the raw live performance. I do heavily compress it with 1176 style compression along with some SSL E channel EQ and SSL buss side chain compression to really make it pop. Might have had a stock Pro Tools saturation plugin on it too last in the chain to bring the overall level up.
@@theemergencyexit6634 Damn... You really know what you're doing with the processing! How did you get there?? I've just begun my mixing journey...
@@boobo3763 Haha thanks, I'm still learning myself, but it's taken me years to get where I'm at. Just a lot of trial and error, and looking up different techniques. Some tips for EQing: focus on cutting frequencies before boosting. It's better to carve out frequencies to make room for others. Use high pass filters on things that don't need sub frequencies. And also maybe cut that 4-5k range a few db on things like guitars that may be burying the attack of the snare. Doesn't hurt to notch out the body frequency of the snare on guitars too. As far as compression goes, I do 1:4 ratio on pretty much everything drums. Slow attack, fast release to allow the transients to still cut through. Most importantly is to use your ears. Don't go off of someone's exact settings, compression gain reduction or frequency analysis. Do what sounds right, not what you think you need to do based off what someone else does. Oh and lastly, look into saturation plugins for drums. They will help bring the overall levels up while taming peaks. Hope this helps! UA-cam is your friend too. Look up every mixing technique you can.
@@theemergencyexit6634 DUDE, thank you soo much for this very considerate response!! Yeah -With the EQ cuts, how deep do you go?? I find myself using the "search and destroy" method and it has improved things IMMENSELY. I've seen people doing just small notched and others going with a very steel and DEEP notch. I'm kind of gravitating towards making them a little shallower. I REALLY need to get better with compression! Not sure why I find it so difficult. But, honestly, i really don't find myself reaching for it that much. It's probably cuz I suck at using it, but typically I'm not super into what it does to my tracks. I'm sure it's just because I suck at using it. Any recommendations on free comp plugins to try? One specific problem I'm having is clipping my master bus. Needa figure out how to keep that in check! I'm just running so many tracks!
@@boobo3763 Hey of course, you're welcome! I'll go as deep as I need. I feel like drums I tend to make more drastic EQ cuts. But not always. It really depends on what needs to be done. Sometimes I'll scoop a ton of mid frequencies out of the kick and toms, while not really doing any cuts to the snare except a high pass filter just below the body frequency of the snare. There really aren't any set rules when it comes to EQ, just do what sounds right. Even if that means cutting 18db out of a certain frequency. But what you should always do is check your EQ by turning it on and off with the mix. And maybe start with gentle adjustments, and add more or less when needed as the mix evolves. And be careful with the search and destroy method. I used to do that a lot more but noticed it took life out of a lot of the instruments. I only do it if I hear a harsh frequency in like the cymbals or guitars, and need to find it to pull it back a bit. Although I do this a lot more for bleed in snare/tom mics only if the cymbals are cutting into those too much. Can help make things smoother and less harsh. And compression will be your friend to make drums stand out. I find sometimes heavily compressing anywhere between -3 to -12db of gain reduction, 1:4 ratio, slow attack, fast release, will make your drums more punchy. And a slow attack means the attack of the compressor is slow, keeping the attack of the actual drum faster and more punchy(kinda confusing and opposite, I know). Also look into "parallel compression" or "New York compression". That can help with an entire drum buss and even entire mix buss. To bring the overall levels up a bit. I haven't used many free plugins other than stock ones, but maybe start trying some on this list. www.sageaudio.com/blog/audio-plugins/top-10-free-compressor-plugins.php And I would start with a compressor that has the least amount of options. Which are usually ones modeled from analog gear. I feel simpler is better, until you get the hang of it. And eventually, see if you can get some sort of SSL plugin pack or something modeled from UA 1176 or LA-2A/LA-3A. Those compressors are pretty straight forward to use and get good results on almost anything with. I find if you start with low levels at the beginning of your mix, it'll leave room for when you increase stuff. I aim for like -16db on the master fader with guitars and bass, and build it from there. And to control the dynamics of drums(which usually cause the clipping) absolutely look into saturation plugins to tame the peaks better. They work sorta like compressors, while adding fullness and harmonics to make your drums sound louder, but actually bring the peaks down, making each hit way more consistent. They can be magical if used right on the snare and toms.
Nicely done fellas!! Thanks for the link Jasen. nAiled the Solo and Jasen plays trumpet too?!? LOL. Can't wait to here some more. I think you guys should do some Pennywise too!! Can't to hear more. Just Subbed the channel.
Fuck yeah!!!
Emergency Exit, sounds dope! Keep playing!
