Backing Track to "Big City" without Pedal Steel.

This is a follow up to my previous video. It's a backing track to Big City so you can play along. If you can record then listen back to your playing on this it will greatly improve your progress. As a Pedal Steel player in a band you will need to be able to "ad lib" or "jam" to songs because of the situations you will find yourself in. Try using my scales and advice from other UA-cam pedal stee...

    So...strings 3 and 5 with no pedals are minor chords and when you engage the A and B pedals, those strings become the 1 and 3 of a major chord? So it seems anyways. awesome. thank you.

    I’ve seen this earlier. I’ve played drums 67 years and bass the last 5 years. I bought a Gretch robro but with no teaching it’s not working. Seeing this video I’m interest in play a pedal steel. 3 pedals is a plenty but I don’t want to get what I got into everything I have now. I’ll come in low end and then step up. I’m open to suggestions.

    Hi, I’m coming from the handheld guitar world(I play a Gibson ES335 through an old Magnatone) and I just bought some lap steels to get my feet wet in this world. I don’t seem to find steel guitar players as obsessed with tube amps as the rest of us are, and in fact alot of them happily play solid state. Am I wrong about that? I’m wondering is there something about the clean glassy tones of a good solid state amp that lends itself better to steel playing? If so, I have a Fender Ultimate Chorus that I’ve had since I was a kid in the 90s … wondring if that won’t work just fine.

    • @gilroyhollister4155

      That Fender amp should work fine.

    • @picker63028
      @picker63028 7 днів тому

      We do like tube amps with steel. All the old legends had the best tones with a Fender Twin reverb. But weight and power is a fsctor. The SS amps offer headroom without the weight. Once the tone factor was improved the tube amps took a back seat. A few of the younger guys still use tubes. At the tons of steel.shows I have attended the SS is 95% used. The tone is there. I have both but use the SS on any gig. At 75 it's easier on my back.

    • @sesa2984
      @sesa2984 6 днів тому

      @@picker63028 I VERY much appreciate this reply. Headroom at volume is indeed an issue. I couldn’t play a gig doing my Scotty Moore type licks for a large enough audience with my Magnatone without sounding like Led Zeppelin. I’ve struggled with my six string playing on that stuff. I’m giving it a try with the solid state for the lap, its doing well , but at home alone, it still sounds great through my old magnatone. Glad to hear you’re out there playing. On the off chance you’ve got anything up on youtube etc., I’d love to hear it. If not, no bother. Enjoy the playin.

    This is by far the best sounding instrument when played right. I’ve always wanted to learn to play this. However I probably wouldn’t even know how to set it up and or tune it. I recently bought a Banjo and I’m struggling to learn that. Hopefully 1 day I will master it and will move on to the Pedal Steel.

    • @gilroyhollistermusic9199
      @gilroyhollistermusic9199 2 місяці тому

      Nothing else in the chain. I played a friend's GFI thru this Katana and it did not sound as good as my GFI. Not sure why. Left to right: Amp Type: Clean, Gain: very low, Volume: way high, Bass: 4 o'clock, Middle: 1 o'clock, Treble: 12 O'clock, Booster/Mod: None, Delay & Reverb: about 1/4 of each. I have the GFI II pickup, which might effect tone somewhat. I also strike the strings very hard on this GFI as it sounds better that way. Other guitars might like a softer touch.

      I would find a music store that has a steel guitar and sit at it with your arm in the position that you would play in. These guitars are not cheap so before making the investment I would see if your shoulder would be able to be in the position to play in without pain.
