Apparently I was pretty tired making this... But a true VW Beetles for dummies video! Please excuse the mistakes... and the frequent "17 inch millimeter..." It's 17 millimeter!

Just a note, in the future I would use 1/4" inch braided fuel hose. I used 3/16" hose on this project and it was a very tight fit.

How to replace a fuel pump 1973 Super Beetle

Here's a quick and dirty DIY guide to replacing a fuel pump. This is a pretty common job, but was specifically done on a 1973 Super Beetle. *Some common reasons to change out your fuel pump: -Fuel pump has completely stopped working. -Sputtering of engine at stop lights or after hitting speed bumps. -Car tends to die after driving in 2nd and 3rd gear, then coming to a stop. -Hinge pin has falle...
I have a 79 and it appears to have a different set up dang it
Where did you purchase the replacement fuel lines?
Is there a way to use the original wiper column arm?
what about the washer hoses?
Excellent video. I filled my tank full of fuel to go to a car club Christmas party the night before the show, noticed a strong smell of fuel in my home. Petrol was dripping at an alarming rate from that front hose. The new garage concrete slab absorbed a lot and it took a week to air out my townhouse. So an emergency repair at 11pm with silicon and glad wrap before my garage exploded. I got the new hose, your video confirmed my 71 model has the same hose setup to the tank. I guess the hose did well to last since 1971. All my rear hoses are new braided ones. I guess I was sucking air into my fuel lines too, might explain the misfiring on the way to the gas station. At least it is not my E92 BMW, that would probably be engine out, gearbox, turbos and half the car interior to fix it.
You did not install the middle only the two ends ...the easy part.
My beetle has a fuel pump below the gas tank where you were showing your fuel line near your front tire. It also has the mechanical fuel pump in the back. Is this normal? My beetle doesnt start sometimes and it hesitates when in gear, also it shuts off when idle. Could 2 gas pumps be my problem?
I've never taken my distributor off, I always use a small wrench one turn at a time, there's a special wrench for vw beetle fuel pump removal somewhere, it's a old-school tool.
I was supposed to drill out a lock cylinder today at work, just to get a new project rolling around. it's a Super Beetle, had to bolt the pan back to it too. Anyways I drill dead center right into the lock... And I just brain farted and went clear through it. Looks like I probably damaged the steering wheel lock mechanism too. Thanks for this video, I'm more confident that I can fix it now. Wish I would've looked this up immediately before i even picked up the drill.
Glad I could help!
"Drain your gas tank" hurt me more then it would have when this video was posted
Great. Thanks for posting this.
Fuel filter should be mounted under the gas tank not the engine compartment. You're flirting with fire disaster...
Thanks for the advice. I've had the car 10 years the filter was there when I bought it and it's always been there, never had a problem with it.
How does the windshield washer fluid line route? Mine was just laying in the trunk. Just curious on how to get fluid line inside dash from trunk.
I’m confused as to which port on the fuel pump goes to the carb. You actually pointed to both of them. Which one is it ?
Thanks for the video it really helped I bought a VW that had a broken key in the ignition
You do a very good job with your videos. You ought to do a lot more because you're good at it.
Great video. Do you know where the 2 vacuum lines go to from the column? I have 2 hose, but not 2. I believe they are part of the window washer but not sure how it works. Thanks.
You need to plug the holes where heater tubes were. If you’re not using the heaters, the holes need to be plugged or capped off
i saw a 72 super beetle for sale where the ignition tumblr was shot so this helps me a lot deciding whether or not to get the bug. thanks for the info.
He said Uhhh so many times 😭😭 Very helpful though
What's that black piece on the back of the wiper switch for mine kinda fell apart
Where did you get the switch from? I bought a replacement and the wires are long and they get pinched pushing it back in
This pump will leave you on the side of the road. Always use the stock German pump. Pierburg. You are welcome!!!
Great video!!! U save me some 💰
Thank you; great presentation.
Thanks for taking the time to shoot this video. I had 71 Super Beetle for 25 years and still enjoy looking through my Bentley's manual. I've had my 91 Jetta diesel for 30 years and enjoy it as much as my Beetle. It has 318,000 miles on it.
Good video 👍
like the no wasting of viewer time Thank U, took about half an hour of watching other bla bla bla videos before finally being helped
CrazZzy Sean, Thank you for the compliment. That's why I started making these, too much talking. Just tell me what I'm supposed to do. Glad the video was helpful!
Ahhh that how it goes.... I'm going to end up watching this a few times before I try it on my '74!! Keep up the great work!!
This video was a life saver. I lost my only key for my 1973 Thing and got to the point where I needed to get the core out. Without the key I could not disengage the steering wheel lockout, so I couldn't pull the whole assembly. Knowing to press in on that spring clip to get the core out was NOT something I was going to figure out unless I had been able to remove the assembly and look at it from all directions. Thanks again!
So glad it was helpful!
Cool video Mr. Spears 😎
I start a 72 project today I turn the steer wheel and it’s got locked the keys I have won’t turn over You think I need to change ignition Celynder in regard to free the steer wheel ?
Hey Rico, Sometimes if you just wiggle the steering wheel while you try and turn the signal it'll unlock. Give that a shot.
If you wanna make a video you might wanna be specific which one is in and which 1 is out...
This is a video on how a mechanical fuel pump works. Different fuel pumps have different in's and different out's. I didn't want to confuse people by sayinging ALL mechanical fuel pumps have their inlet or outlet in a certain location so as not to have people put them in the wrong spot. Hence why I said, you'll want to remember which one was your in and which one was your out.
Thanks for posting this. I think it works on most early VW's!
Perfect video! Thanks so much!
that’s not copper tubing
Thank you!!!
Could you show another video with details about your oil filter set up? I like the idea of having it in the engine bay! Cool!
whoever couldn't make a copy of your key because of the age I call bull crap on whoever told you that I just went and had a key made just from a code today and they were able to.. thanks for the video I'm going to have to do the same thing on my ignition someone changed out my ignition so the door key and ignition key were a different cut.
Hey, thanks for the comment. I was told the key was too worn down to make a copy, so I just went ahead and make the switch. It was a pretty easy job. Best of luck!
Missed the part where you replaced the line from the front to the back of the car.
I'm confused on what you missed. If I'm understanding your comment you mean the copper tubing that runs from behind the engine to the engine bay... I didn't replace that as it was in good working order.
michele sent this
i love you mr. spears
How to unlock steering wheel, no ignition key
Ever replace the metal line that goes thru the body? Or have a video showing this? My fuel pressure if off and I think this is my culprit. I'd like to replace all lines including the main one thru the body
Hey Larry, I haven't, but maybe a future video!
When I try to put the new ignition cylinder in all the way on the left side, is that what the grease was for?
Hey Jimmy, I'm not sure what you are trying to ask. But if I guess the answer is, the grease is not necessarily to help the cylinder slide in, but for the end of the cylinder that makes contact inside.
@@vwbeetlesfordummies ahh okay, but my issue is, on the inside of the space where the ignition cylinder goes there appears to be a small pin like thing on the left that's stopping the actual cylinder from going in all the way
I have a 1970 Volkswagen beetle, however when I tried to remove the ignition, it seems it doesn't have that small tab. I'm not sure what to do aside from drilling a hole on the side?
So, I have seen this before. In some models there isn't a hole to push the tab. I heard the best thing to do is to drill a hole in the side.
@@vwbeetlesfordummies thank you so much. I wasnt sure what to do exactly but I finally managed to pull out that thing without damaging any part.
Thank you!! I bought a 73 Super project with no key! You rock!
I have one, lost keys, I hope I can do it
Where did you order the new lock cylinder from?
Hey Jimmy, I got mine from partsgeek.com for about $9.95
@@vwbeetlesfordummies thank you
Thank you very much, you helped me much,to know about key - ignation.!
I know I am kinda off topic but does anybody know of a good site to watch new tv shows online ?
