Top Billing
When you’re watching the opening credits to a movie, it’s not just a list of names. What you’re actually seeing is intense negotiations by Hollywood stars and their agents playing out in text form. Title designers have to create something that’s entertaining to watch, while also presenting the names of all the creative people in a very particular order. It’s like a game of Tetris, to make sure everybody gets their due.

A River Runs Through Los Angeles
Переглядів 1,4 тис.21 день тому
When you hear the word "river," you probably picture a majestic body of water flowing through a natural habitat. Well, the LA River looks nothing like that. Most people who see it probably mistake it for a giant storm drain. It's a deep trapezoidal channel with steep concrete walls, and a flat concrete bottom. Los Angeles was founded around this river. But decades ago it was confined in concret...

When you go to a concert, you might try to get there right when the doors open. Or perhaps you take your time and skip the opening act. But generally, you want to be there when the show starts. In February, everyone who went to a concert in Halberstadt, Germany, showed up 23 years late. The performance is of a piece called ORGAN2/ASLSP (www.aslsp.org/) . ASLSP stands for “as slow as possible,” ...

It’s hard to overstate the vastness of the Skid Row neighborhood in Los Angeles. It spans roughly 50 blocks, which is about a fifth of the entire downtown area of Los Angeles. It’s very clear when you’ve entered Skid Row. The sidewalks are mostly occupied by makeshift homes. A dizzying array of tarps and tents stretch out for blocks, improvised living structures sitting side by side. The edge o...

The Los Angeles Leaf Blower Wars
Переглядів 1,7 тис.Місяць тому
The leaf blower is one of the most hated objects in the modern world. They’re loud, they pollute, and… how important is a leafless lawn anyway? In a lot of towns and cities, the gas-powered leaf blower has been banned. In others, there are strict guidelines on where and when they can be used. In Los Angeles, California, the leaf blower has never gone quiet, but the war to ban them has been ragi...
Fact Checking the Supreme Court

For a long time, the Court operated under what was called Legal Formalism. Legal formalism said that the job of any judge or justice was incredibly narrow. It was to basically look at the question of the case in front of them, check that question against any existing laws, and then make a decision. Unlike today, no one was going out of their way to hear what economists or sociologists or histor...

Avery's idea for a permanent Summer Olympics site is awesome. The flame can still do its world tour. A "host" country can still organize an opening ceremony. And we avoid the political BS of bidding and BS games end up in Russia or China. We can do the Winter Olympics in Switzerland permanently.

These are people in power in our government. It would be VERY prudent to hear what they have to say. Robert Caro has always been trying to teach us how power works so that we can be better voters. Dismissing any politician as an airhead is also incredibly dangerous and leaves us vulnerable to those who like for us to think they're airheads while they do actual damage all the while. Not to mention, a Congresswoman from the New York City that Moses helped create and the current Secretary of Transportation who was also a Mayor are worthwhile perspectives to try to get something from, regardless of their political affiliation (ESPECIALLY if you're anti-progressive. Know thy enemy). If you had any critical thinking ability, you would understand that.

The place I worked at in the 90’s had a lot of dirty non hand washers so I stole an “employees must wash hands” sign from a Publix bathroom. I cut off the Publix logo and stuck it to the bathroom door at my work. It’s still there. Maybe it helped, I don’t know.

Boston had 452 miles of streetcar lines most of which fed into the Green Line but all but 3 surface trolley lines were eliminated and 1 was trimmed, even though 3 grade separated light rail lines were built (Riverside, Union Square, Medford Tufts). Fewer trams operate inside the tunnel today than trolleys did decades ago yet travel times are longer and service more unreliable.

Once I'm reading it's great, but if I put it down it really becomes hard for me to pick it up again. It is so funny, in a really devious politicians way. By the way, Smith and Mrs Moskowitz know Moses set all that entrenched power for himself, there is a line in there about that. Really engagingly written.

Glycine is an amino acid that has a single hydrogen atom as its side chain. It is the simplest stable amino acid (carbamic acid is unstable). Glycine is not widely used in foods for its nutritional value, except in infusions. Instead, glycine's role in food chemistry is as a flavorant.
