Can't really comapre the two, Bloo used like three different pieces of music in their ballad.

I won't lie. I like the Bluecoats version better. Mandarins had a neat solo thing at the beginning that was really cool and also really exposed so whoever was playing it had to be as good as possible doing it and that's hard to play. But the chaotic nature of the Bluecoats and their ripple effect in the sound as they were doing it really sold the show for me. One of the best ballads in either show because something like this really is good for soundscaping and lends itself to producing a good performance with the display of tonal quality depending on who is playing it. It's also technically challenging. But yeah, the Mandarins had something going but the Bluecoats transported me to another world with their sound design. I can't comment on the visuals since I'm blind but I'm sure they looked great too.

I wouldn’t even compare them. I absolutely love this ballad for Mandarins. It made sense with their show. Bloo did a good job with arrange it into the entropy feeling in their show.

I dont know that one was better than the other.... two equally beautiful, but thematically flavored versions.

This is definitely a hot take but bluecoats had a very underwhelming show this year, my biggest beef is the uniforms were kinda an eyesore and other from that everything else just felt middle of the road. As far as Agape I do like the mandarins version better, that flugel sounds so clean on everything

I think Mandarins' arrangement is a good representation of what the original song would sound like if played by a drum corps, but I think bluecoats had the better arrangement and played it better.

Bloo's ballad as a whole is better, but if we're comparing ONLY the Agape sections of each ballad (since both play a different piece afterwards anyway) I actually liked the Mandarins arrangement just a bit better. It stays truer to the original and that's really the only reason why lol

up until finals week, Mandarins was the winner in my eyes. However, something went awry with the mixing during that section all three nights for the Mandarins and it did not hit nowhere near as hard as it had for me earlier in the season.

I feel like Mandarins played it, and Bloo performed it. Gotta give it to Bloo

I love them both but for me Bloo is the most moving and melodic. Of course my son marched so I’m a bit biased. 😉💙

Bluecoats, in my opinion the Mandarins one had too much going on which took away from the simplicity and effectiveness of the piece.

They both cracked a bunch in finals so it's a tie

I’d say bluecoats because they executed the very faint echoes of the piece very reminiscently which gave more affect than the Mandarines. But the mandarins use of instruments seemed more creative but would’ve been cooler if it was more echo like and faint but props to both corps !

Bloo. The flow is so much better and I think its their sound design. They also used another piece - Plans we made by Son lux to really keep that flow in the balad and it works. Mandies feels like its solo based though when Bloo's solos are for a soundscape. so different but you can tell which one did it better imo

I think bloo's is just far more creative. It takes sound profiles from other pieces, the field design is more challenging, and the solos are used to create an atmosphere rather than be just in your face with note runs. Don't get me wrong tho, mandarins sounded amazing. Maybe SOME tuning issues, but they sounded very clear.

For me, no question the Bluecoats. Keep in mind the chaotic nature of the arrangement for Bloo was purposeful.

Both were great. I felt like the Mandarins had more clarity in their version. I didn't even realize they did the same song. Edit: I also noticed how much more emotion bloo put into Agape, how moving it was. I changed my opinion, bloo taking the W on this one, hmm ironic. The music design was just amazing.

coats version had more layers but i liked the wall of sound we heard in the mandarins
