Having taught writing for over 16 years at the high school and university level, I have a few resources I would be remiss to not share as beacons for my student's journey:
Stephen Minot gets applause for the deep dive into the theory of fiction writing.
Derek Murphy gets the credit for the 24 "Plot Dot' beats I chose for my Plot Box.
James Scott Bell gets the glory for the importance of the Midpoint and how to write through it.
Sarra Cannon gets all the claps for her own series on plotting, planning and writing.
Brandon Sanderson gets a shout for his generous UA-cam sharing of his classes at BYU.
Scott Scheper gets a BIG high five for bringing me into the Antinet Zettelkasten tribe.
Kathleen Spracklen gets the biggest hug for her book 'Writing with Emotion' and co-founding LiLLiPub with ME!!

Slowly the pieces fall together....do you, and if so where/how, do you capture stuff like 'amy disliked so and so on sight" or "this forest makes everyone feel uneasy when they walk in". In other words, odd things that don't really fit in the character description cards.
next video!!
Hey Victoria - learning lots from the videos. One piece that is evading me is indeed the scene documentation. I've sketched out a bit of my book already and am trying to figure out how to capture all the little things that grew while I was writing as well as each scene. Maybe point me somewhere? Thanks!
Hi Shelly!! Thanks for reaching out -- and GREAT question! I'll answer in a video tomorrow (9-2-24 Monday) so stay tuned, it will be fun!!
🔥
hello fellow world builder
Hello! I think your channel name is my new fave!! Welcome to the notebox!
I love this!!
There are SUCH rich options -- I intend to share them ALL!! So happy you are here to share🤩
😊 ty
Brilliant. So excited for book
Very cool!
Thanks so much!!! I really appreciate the love!!!!
Love this!
😊 Thank you. playing video catch up again. Was on vacation in mountains.
Just wanted to say I've been hitting a wall trying to actually start structuring a story for a comic I want to write and this just popped up on my home page? I've never heard of the Zettelkasten system, but it's definitely got the gears in my head turning! I'm for sure checking your channel out and signing up for the email list. Thanks for the Inspo. c:
SO happy you found me!! It will definitely help!! It sounds like you already have either characters or a plot in mind... So, you just need to start your Plot Box and start developing your characters out!! I'd be happy to help if you need a direction (it sure worked wonders for me!)
Thank you
Thank you. This is like receiving my favorite box of chocolates and a dozen roses. I'm so glad you are putting this in the book. Very useful 😊
I am SO grateful to have you as a cheerleader!! It really means the world!! 😍
😊 Thank you
Really looking forward to this one. A book on "zk + writing fiction" is so needed, and will no doubt be very well-received. Psyched to see more.
AWESOMME!!! Thanks for the encouragement! I'm on track to finish in about 5 weeks -- Fingers Crossed!!
Yes! Please include story structure from other countries and cultures. It will help us immensely. Thank you!🥰
Excellent!! I'm on it!
I love this idea!
Cool! It has served me very well!😀
Definitely want to know about all the structures.
Yes definitely I want to know about all the structures and how it’s connect to main cards!
@@volteregel Got it!! Main cards connection, definitely included!! Thanks!
😊So exciting! Looking forward to this book. Thank you "A million times" for all your effort, time, and skill. You are so appreciated.😊
You are amazing!1 Thank you 😍
😊 This was helpful. Thank you
😊 Thank you
Thank you! This is really, really useful! I learned a lot. Thanks for sharing!

Exciting! Signed up for the email. 😊
Thank you SO MUCH!!! It's an adventure, but we're getting it done together!!
Thank you. Love this explanation. I'm excited to read both books. I'm playing catch up again on your videos. Thank you for sharing this information. 😊
I just starting putting together my Zettelkasten! Would love to get more information about your main branch structure for fiction writing. I've started with the 5 basic ones mentioned in the "tome", but I know I'll have to develop additional branches to incorporate the many notes I've been taking in my research for writing my fictional series. Keeping in mind they should be very broad in nature, I'm thinking to start with something like Plot, Characters, Setting/World Building, etc.. Your thoughts?
YES! You're exactly right!! Start with a loose structure and let it grow -- just use your keyword index to cross-ref very specific terms, then you can always find your way back. I have a plot section, a characters section (where all character development cards go), and then I keyword index general setting cards in my main box. (Like, a particular place that I want to use.) Specific world building goes in a section for just that -- where I put everything that refers to the specifics of the story world. I can do a more detailed walk through -- hang tight for that!!
Lots coming up on world building -- stay with me!!!
I’m so happy to hear about the book being ready so soon!
Scribbling as fast as i can!!!
😊
No
Your mention of Cahokia makes me feel like you would love to read Witchy Eye by D.J. Butler! It’s so good!
@Belemrys ooooh!! Thanks for the tip!! I'll check it out-- I found something about the whole idea very intriguing!! I can't wait to read more!
Thank you. I'm so excited for your book. Love this.
😊
😊. Thank you again. ❤️ . Your story is wonderful by the way. I enjoyed listening to u read that little bit.
I'm glad to hear that!! I will be sharing more samples as we go forward -- I think the best way to "SHOW" how to do it is to let you all see how I use the research and zettelkasten in practice! Thanks for being here!!
Thank you. Really liked this a lot! . I'm binging your videos best I can. They are so helpful. . I watch a video during my breaks between MY DAIlY TO DO list. . Many of your videos are fairly short so it makes it easy. The longer ones I watch over several breaks or days. 😊 I plan to order your book. 😊
awww!!! I am SO happy to be of help to you!! I try to keep things short for that reason -- then it's just a bite at a time! Are you writing a book? (or planning one?)
😊🎉 Thank you. Very helpful! 😊
🧡 Thank you 😊
❤ thank you 😊
Victoria, thank you! This gives me a really good starting point. Time to dive in!
I look forward to learning how you use the zettelkasten in this process.
Thank you 😊
Thank you 😊
So Kara is the Earth Guardian and a Water; and Chad is a Fire and a Water. Now all we need is an Air! ChadWICK might be a better choice because candles [fire] have wicks. Maybe Chad collects feathers (an Air symbol). Interesting that Chad worked at a woodpile (wood is used for making Fire). I get it - fear of NEEDLES is a story THREAD. Maybe if Chad was bitten by a dog it would further explain why he doesn't want any pets. Maybe Chad's favorite band is Earth, Wind and Fire. Maybe Chad has recurring nightmares of drowning (which would put out his Fire). I would like to see how we would actually use the cards in writing. With non-fiction the process of using the cards seems like it would be more linier (gather them, lay them out and go through them one at a time); whereas with fiction it seems like you would need to reference different parts of the cards multiple times during the writing process.
YES!! Your analysis is outstanding!! I have not planned deeply in those aspects yet, so Thank you so much for the comment, I am making note of it for future reference.🤓 I will answer how to work flow the z k cards for fiction in the next video👍
The title of the novel is the Conjuring Stitch, so yes, needles and thread are critical for the story.👍
I am answering your question about how to workflow with the ZK cards in todays video
I joined your mailing list for your 'Zettelkasten for Fiction: Where Imagination Finds Order' book. Also, have you checked out Katytastic's 27 chapter outline method? See: ua-cam.com/video/94F-3Z6CJJw/v-deo.html
Thank you for signing up!! I don't know that one -- I'll look at the link! thanks!
@@AntiNovelist I think you will like it.
K M Wieland's 'Creating Character Arcs', 'Outlining your Story', and 'Writing Your Story's Theme' are also great resources.
I know KMW's Character Arcs book -- good stuff
James Scott Bell's 'Writing from the Middle' and 'Super Structure' are both great little books.
yes - I reference Bell several times in other vids (though I don't entirely agree with shoe horning screen writing techniques into novel writing). I do like his Mirror Moment analysis -- very helpful.
@@AntiNovelist I agree that there has been way too much screenwriting influence on novel writing (which is a very different artform).
