Loving this playthrough btw! It's wild that my two favourite games of all time (HWBM and DE) were two of your first games on the channel, love to see it
You're pretty much right about exploring other dialogue options providing bonuses to skill checks, it's just not *every* branch that does this (and a few might even provide negative modifiers too). Most of your skill checks are about making an argument or convincing someone, or coming to some realization yourself, and the more you know, the easier that'll be. The more you've pushed the other person off balance (by bringing up something they didn't want you to know, or didn't have an answer for), the easier it'll be. And of course, if you make yourself look like a clown, it might become *harder* because it'll be easier for them to dismiss you or shut you down. So it is *usually* worth exploring all the available dialogue before a check, (except the ones that might reflect too poorly on you) For the same reason it's often also worth exploring dialogue branches that *seem* to cover things you already know. Maybe you'll learn a new detail or something that doesn't match what others told you, and that might provide a bonus to skill checks later down the line. Getting two people to tell you about the same thing is a great way to figure out if one of them might be lying or omitting things.
@jalfd1 ohhhh, this is a great piece of advice! I've been disregarding options like that for the very reason of repetitive dialogue- but if it helps unravel the mystery and pass more checks, then that's what I want! :)
Kim is probably the best NPC ever. I have seen (listen) around 10 different play-through of this game and all of them who played the game wanted to appease Kim. I reloaded once when I did my first play-through because I disappointed him.
@@Jagetful Kim IS really great. I want to prove to him that his faith in Harry isn't unfounded! He's a great coworker/friend to him in this time of need. :)
I haven't quite caught up yet so it may be moot but you can talk to the people on the balconies, I would in particular recommend talking to the guy in the courtyard if you haven't got to that point yet.
@@PhiltheMoko ohhh, thank you for letting me know! I'll try to do that when I'm next over there!
In England, the whole idea of going to the beach for a seaside holiday was, more or less, invented by companies. In the thirties there would be company hotels where as a job perk you could go and stay for a weekend. Joyce talking about how Wild Pines build Martinase is in reference to that I believe.
@@PhiltheMoko I see, that's an interesting bit of worldbuilding!
Hah, the game telling you you are in Gary's apartment is technically a spoiler!
As you start to get more skill points, sometimes I found it useful to keep one or two in reserve to unlock skill checks that were holding me up 😊
I terms of wether to focus on one thing or several, i dont think there is a best way, some quests can go on for a while and are best broken up, sometimes you might hit a roadblock with a failed check and others string together nicely. Id say trust your own judgement and do what you think will be fun, if you're having a good time that will come through in the video 😊
@@PhiltheMoko thank you!! I'm definitely going to lean towards that mindset then, just taking the game as it comes to me! :3
You were right that sometimes you have to have the prybar equiped to use it, just doesn't happen to help in this case.
@@PhiltheMoko fair enough hehe
I'm really enjoying this playthrough and your commentary! Been catching up over the last couple of days :) To clarify one or two things you've run across so far: * yes, you can internalize as many thoughts as you want simultaneously. Initially you have three slots for thoughts, but you can open up more by spending a skill point * Dialogue options in quotes are stuff you'll say out loud. If they're not quoted it's stuff you say to yourself (typically responding to whichever one of your skills just chimed in in your head). Dialogue options beginning with "wait" are stuff you can safely do without advancing the conversation. * A useful tip is to not immediately spend all your skill points. You can spend them at any time, even mid-dialogue, and every time you level up a skill, all skill checks for that skill are unlucked allowing you to retry them. So often it's useful to keep one or two skill points in reserve, either to unlock a skill check you failed and want to retry, or just to up your chances of passing a red check (which can never be retried).
@jalfd1 thank you so much for the advice! The dialogue pointers are really gonna come in handy, with how many episodes end up being 'talk to this character: The movie' lol! I'll try to stockpile a few skill points before I spend more :)
Cuno's shack isn't really important any more. It provided an alternate route to the harbor, but you already got into it by fighting Measurehead instead, so don't sweat it. :)
@jalfd1 thank you for the clarification! It's good to know that the game allows for multiple avenues of discovery :3
@@tapiocaheartsytthere was also a small interaction with Kim looking out over the harbour, nothing major but I'm surprised it didn't fire. Perhaps you have to go up there before going to Evrat.
@@PhiltheMoko i guess i did things in a bit of a weird order hehe

@LadyHuntress5580 thank you for keeping track! Looks like we really did have a lethal company hehehe
I love it when people ask for a comical amount of questions!
You may well figure this further on but scabs are people who come to under cut the union workers, also know as strike breakers.
6:34 ok so there is a cop show called The Wire and one of the writers was an ex cop. There os a scene in the show where a hung over detective talks about using "soft eyes". Basically the idea that when you're brain is in an altered state you can notice things or form connections that you would never normally.
Not suggesting that it is exactly what's going on here, just a interesting aside
@@PhiltheMoko that is fascinating, I could see how it would lead to unique deductions!
Nothing wrong with save scumming in a single player game! Personally I did it a couple times in my playthrough but just so you know there is often another way or a check isn't necessary to progress the story.
@PhiltheMoko thanks for the advice, I'm definitely still learning how to navigate the game haha
28:52 psst go back up to the rooftop and poke around little more
@@OddMusician thank you for the advice! I'll check around up there in my next recording session.
Hah, you're not wrong about this being a pretty heavy game to get into for your first stream! As someone who has watched plenty of Disco playthroughs this is definitely one of the more entertaining ones!
@@PhiltheMoko you're right about that, but I'm not complaining! It may be a heavy game, but I'm glad to have the opportunity to navigate it with my own decisions, guiding the protagonist along the path. And thank you so much for the praise!
Your aside about raising kids is great, they are not born with any trauma or anxiety, that is imprinted on them by circumstance or patenting
@PhiltheMoko thank you, I'm glad it was received well :)
Meeting Cuno is often a challenge, you navigated it quite well!
Don't worry about speaking over the dialogue, your commentary is always insightful - and if I wanted to listen to dialogue that I have heard before, I would just watch a silent walkthrough. As for your ideas on how the skills work, you are pretty much on the money. Esprit de Corps is not the only supernatural skill, Shivers is like Esprit de Corps, but it is connected to the literal soul of Revachol herself (and yes, she goes by She/Her, making her one of the many girlbosses throughout the game.) Inland-Empire is a mixture of intuition/gut feelings and the ability to literally peer beneath the surface of reality itself, and the rest are just as you said; our boy Harry casually acting as a contact microphone on the concept of human experience itself. And yes - Harry is short for something, and you will find out about what it is later! Along with many other things in regard to his past. Right, sorry for my shorter than intended comment, I've been *extremely* busy and this is mostly a stopgap. If I am able, I'll go through the videos and write out another comment - but for now - thank you for this video and I hope you have a wonderful day!
@pessimisticnihilist3691 thank you so much for the insight, the supernatural abilities Harry displays have been so fascinating to parse and come to understand. I enjoyed this part of the game quite a bit, and uncovering more about what Mr Du Bois has been up to only makes me more excited to unravel the mystery. Thank you for the well wishes, I'm doing my best to bring the series back!
As it's been brought up, personally I'm not a huge fan of talking over the dialogue, sometimes it can make it a bit hard to catch what you are saying. I do agree that your commentary is great, it's just a personal preference so please don't take to heart too much 😁
@@PhiltheMoko i will keep that in mind, I do want to make sure my voice is heard! I'm glad you like my commentary! :3
This Verbal Boss Battle is so neat Also Disco wanting to cry thinking about the kids is so sad and endearing
@Choco-Rune I agree, it's really great characterization for him as a man broken by the brutal reality of being unfit for police work
Haven't heard of this game, but I'm excited to see your playthrough of it :)
@@SnufflySpy thank you so much, I hope you enjoy! A new episode goes up today :3
I realised that my comment on the last video did not go through for some reason, so this may be a bit bloated. For the first thing, you can increase your Health and Morale pool by putting points into Endurance and Volition respectively. Also, quicksaving before an interaction when you are low in either pool is something that I did a lot in my first playthrough. Even if I did it a bit too much like the little scare rodent-brained individual that I am. Scurrying around like a little street rat. Now, here is something that may help you deal with some of the bigots in this game (not mechanically, but in an emotional manner. I know that this helped me.). I am translating it into binary for you to translate into English as it is a spoiler, but it is here if you want it: 01001011 01101001 01101101 00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01100111 01100001 01111001 , so every time a character says a slur, he is absolutely giving them the nastiest side eye imaginable. That little bit of info helped me push through the most flagrant of the bigots because of the mental image alone. And just so you know (as this is a misconception that may genuinely hamper enjoyment of the game), there is no real race-war going on. Just a couple of bigots who are acting exactly as one would expect. There is tension, but it is about the level that one would expect from our past (the 50's or so). And it is not a big part of the plot beyond that racist mug that you found and its owner. Speaking of *homosexualitiè* and such matters, there is actually a surprising amount of representation from literally all corners of the LGBT+ spectrum. Truly, the radical left has won. The west has fallen, millions shall see the horror of people being happy in their own skin and hurting nobody. As for the thought mechanic, they are a passive process that runs in the background while you are doing policework until they are fully internalised. When done, they provide bonuses that you are unable to know until it is complete. The research bonus is an entirely temporary ordeal that only lasts until it is completed. Also, for the floating ring around your head and the bubbles that sometimes appear, you can click those. Sometimes, they unlock dialogue with your skills or an interaction with the environment, other times they give some neat information. Now, I have some more important info to share that pertains to Measurehead and only Measurehead. Save-scum. This is not because that it is hard otherwise, or because it is in any way necessary; and I am not joking - just save-scum. Punch Measurehead until you succeed. While his dialogue is an incredible satire of 'scientific' racism, it is honestly so much funnier for a complete disaster of a human being to walk up to this 'superior individual' and knock him the fuck out. I will forgive you. This, or you could come back to him at a later point and invest the skill points into Physical Instrument to better beat his racist ass up fair and square. Sorry for how bloated this comment is, it contains the haphazardly mashed together content of two separate comments, and I am feeling dizzy for no reason. Now that I think about it, I should probably check that out. Have a wonderful day! PS - Last little spoiler in case you want it. Nothing drastic, and nothing important, just some early info that you may enjoy. 01001111 01110101 01110010 00100000 01010000 01110010 01101111 01110100 01100001 01100111 00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01100010 01101001 00100000 01100001 01101110 01100100 00100000 01101000 01100001 01110011 00100000 01100001 00100000 01100011 01110010 01110101 01110011 01101000 00100000 01101111 01101110 00100000 01001011 01101001 01101101 00101110.
@pessimisticnihilist3691 I can't thank you enough for your continued advice and clarification. Don't worry at all about leaving a 'bloated' comment- the fact you care so much about my videos and want to share your thoughts on them makes me incredibly happy. It's great seeing how much you have to say! I think you'll be satisfied with how I handled Measurehead in the next episode. And I'll try to relax on all the heavier topics this game is bringing up- it was a lot back to back, but I get to have the main character be a paragon of social justice, which does help a lot lol. Excited to see all the queer rep! Thanks again! :3
Ahh its great fun seeing people talk to their precinct for the first time
@@PhiltheMoko they're all so unapologetically mean and sarcastic, I love it hehe
Great episode!
Im just at the part of the vid where you first voice act and honestly that could be the protagonists voice, looking forward to watching where it goes from here.
@@PhiltheMoko thank you so much! I'm glad the voice is effective :D
I HAVE RETURNED! Sorry for not commenting in a while, I've been busy. Your videos have an energy to them, a humanity that is rare in this era of the internet where everyone is trying to change themselves to fit into a mould. Trying to play a character for clout rather than just be themselves and have fun. It is refreshing, and is way too hard to find nowadays. Thank you for this, and have a wonderful day!
I appreciate the continued support! Your comments go a long way in motivating me to keep going, and I'm glad you like the videos so much! Have a good day/night!
Thank you for this video, I honestly liked how casual this one was compared to the other two. Not too much analysis, just having fun watching a grown man being verbally assaulted by a literal child twice in a row. Also, the white check to not throw up was reopened when you went back to the body, you can go and do that when and if you'd like. As for using items that provide modifiers, you do not equip them unless they are noted down in the inventory as a Tool (or piece of clothing, when you want to get *stylish*), otherwise they just sit in your inventory passively until they are used in dialogue or potentially sold to someone.
Yet another fantastic video. For context, Reàl is the current global reserve currency of this world, and Martinese is a district of Revachol. One that both Precinct 57 and 41 are supposed to be policing due to the frankly chaotic way that the RCM was established, creating conflict between the two districts.
@pessimisticnihilist3691 that makes sense. I figured reàl was the modern currency, but I ran away anyways for the comedy of it all :3
Another wonderful video. I honestly love how you can actually express your thought process and make the experience truly engaging, rather than a dry soulless video with a few comments like 'oh, that is cool' and 'interesting...' thrown in. Your analysis is insightful and extremely cool to watch in action. Something to note, the skill that referred to Kim Kitsuragi as your half-brother was Esprit De Corps. That particular one is essentially a one-way psychic/mental connection that the main character possesses which connects them with the rest of their colleagues of the RCM (Revachol Citizens' Militia, the police force of Revachol). Kim is not your half-brother genetic, but spiritually. Right, I think that is everything. Once more, this is great content. I shall watch your career with great interest. -SOMM
Thank you so much! I appreciate the clarification on the 'half brother' comment, though I was definitely still confused about it for a while lol. Analysis and critically thinking about media is important to me, as well as taking in all information step by step, so I'm glad that's coming through in the content!
Insultingly underrated. Genuinely one of the best playthroughs I've seen so far. Your commentary is extremely good. Your personality and general attitude are wonderful. I am looking forward to any more content that you may or may not produce (no pressure). I'd recommend not worrying *too* much about failure of checks. This game is very narrative focused and is essentially a visual novel. Even to the point where fans refer to it as 'the best video game they've ever read' because of how much of a book it is. Of course, some checks ARE of importance, but focus on having fun/trying to fix the fucked up mess of a human being you are playing as. Again, this is great content and you should be proud of it. Remain a cool human being. This is not a choice. -SOMM
ah, thank you so much! Your comment made me incredibly happy- I'm glad you liked the video so much!! I've recorded several more episodes, and they'll be going up every Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday! I appreciate the advice- the check system is wonderful, and I'll try not to worry about failing any! I'm mostly just excited to unravel this mystery, and fix main character like you said! I hope you enjoy the next videos. Thank you once again- you're very kind! :)
