Pruning my Ficus Retusa - December 2023
Hello!
In this video I'm pruning my Ficus Microcarpa with grafted Ficus Retusa branches. The tree is an airlayer from a bigger ficus tree I bought from the local garden center. I'm very exited for it's future and I'm happy to start of its bonsai journey!
Enjoy!

Hello! In this video I take on the NABC Holiday Challange! Thank you Gav from @NotAnotherBonsaiChannel for starting this challange! Hello! In this video I prune my Ficus Benjamina bonsai. It has grown a lot and it was time to give it a hair cut. I also raised it a bit in the pot to reveal some root flare. Finally I made a spontanious graft on the tree to add a branch to a specific spot. I'm very happy with the result! Hello! In this video I repot my ficus benjamina forest (or jungle) into a new pot and create a landscape for it, using rocks and moss. I'm superhappy with the result and I learned a lot. This is the first time I'm using akadama as substrate, so it will be interesting to see how that works out as well. All trees used for this planting are cuttings from the same parent tree. Enjoy! #bonsai #ficus...

    Give it a few pokes with the tip of your scissors on the backside if you want to encourage branches. My ficus likes to backbud after pruning in any area that has light "damage". Hope this helps. Btw, I'm definitely not an expert lol.

    I have the few same benjamina ficus'es but they are not rooting air roots, I wonder why. Maybe I am keeping them in house during cold time, and during summer outside but it's not so humid there.

    • @BigLittleTrees-kt3gr
      @BigLittleTrees-kt3gr Рік тому

      yeah, this is the first time I get aireal roots on my ficuses. Last year I had them indoors over winter, but this year I've put an indoors greenhouse up in my garage, which seems to be keeping humidity quite well, so I think thats the reason. If you've got space for it, I would recommend that :)

    im more interested into such green moss how do you grow the moss

    • @BigLittleTrees-kt3gr
      @BigLittleTrees-kt3gr Рік тому

      Sometimes I the same of the cut off moss I get when trimming the moss and sprinkle it over the soil where I want the moss, then it usually grows by itself. But mostly I harvest moss from sidewalks and such and put on the trees. Make sure to really push the moss into the soil so it gets good contact, and also try to keep it moist. 😀

      @joshimahan7497 Рік тому

      @@BigLittleTrees-kt3gr keeping it moist wouldnt root rot the bonsai?

    • @BigLittleTrees-kt3gr
      @BigLittleTrees-kt3gr Рік тому

      It depends on how you define "moist" I guess. What I meant was basically don't let it dry out. I dont know how the climate is where you keep your trees or moss. If its humid I think it should be fine. But if it gets dry, you could mist it as soon as it gets too dry, or use a humidifier if youre indoors. But you should ofcourse not keep it constantly wet as the roots could rot as you say 😊
