Essential Korean Expressions in Simple Dialogue
◉ Dialogue
Ⓐ 안녕하세요! 반갑습니다.
Hello! Nice to meet you.
Ⓑ 안녕하세요, 쥬니 선생님! 저는 레이예요.
Hello, teacher Juni! I'm Rei.
Ⓐ 레이 씨는 싱가폴 사람이에요?
Are you a Singaporean, Rei?
Ⓑ 네, 저는 싱가폴 사람이에요. 선생님은 한국 사람이에요?
Yes, I’m a Singaporean. Teacher, are you Korean?
Ⓐ 네, 저는 한국 사람이에요.
Yes, I’m a Korean.
◉ Vocabulary
선생님 teacher
저 I
씨 Mr., Miss, Ms., or Mrs.
한국 Korea
사람 person
한국 사람 Korean
◉ Understanding “저는” and Topic Markers “는” and “은”
저 (jeo): This means “I” and is used when talking about yourself in formal or polite situations.
는 (“neun”): This is called a “topic marker.” It highlights the main topic or focus of the sentence.
Tip: To understand the nuance of 저는 (“jeoneun”), think of it as “As for me” in English.
Examples:
저는 레이예요. → (As for me) I’m Rei.
저는 싱가폴 사람이에요. → (As for me) I’m a Singaporean.
In another example, 선생님은 (seon-saeng-nim-eun), the topic marker 은 (eun) is attached to “선생님” (teacher), which ends in a consonant. In contrast, 는 (neun) is used with 레이 씨 (Rei ssi) and 저 (jeo) because they end in vowels.
◉ A Noun + 예요/이에요
In the sentences '저는 레이예요' (I am Rei) and '저는 싱가폴 사람이에요' (I am a Singaporean), the phrases '레이예요' and '사람이에요' consist of a noun (e.g., 레이, 사람) combined with '예요' or '이에요,' which functions like the verb 'to be' in English, linking the subject to the noun.
예요 is used when the noun ends in a vowel.
이에요 is used when the noun ends in a consonant.
◉ Understanding the Full Sentence Structure
Examples:
저는 레이예요. → I am Rei.
저는 싱가폴 사람이에요. → I am a Singaporean.
선생님은 한국 사람이에요. → The teacher is a Korean.
These sentences follow the structure:
Subject + Topic Marker (은/는) + Noun + 이에요/예요, which means “Subject is a Noun.”

I remember that in some of your old videos, you also mentioned the actual Hangul pronunciation in casual speech (like 못 잤어요 sounds like 몯 짰어요, am I right?). That was very helpful because this information is hard to find online!

    • @JunisKoreanClass-n7l
      @JunisKoreanClass-n7l 6 днів тому

The phrase 못 잤어요 is pronounced as 몯 짜써요. First, 못 is pronounced as 몯 because the final consonant ㅅ is realized as ㄷ at the end of the syllable. Then, the initial ㅈ sound in 잤 becomes strengthened through a process called tensification (경음화), resulting in the pronounced form 짜. This occurs because the preceding final consonant influences the following consonant, making it pronounced with more tension. Additionally, 잤어요 is pronounced as 자써요 due to a phenomenon called liaison, where the consonant sound at the end of a syllable connects smoothly with the vowel sound of the next syllable. 도움이 되기를 바랍니다. 라울 씨~^

Your videos are perfect because it's really difficult for most learners to learn vocabulary & practice grammar without the context. There aren't many such videos online. I’m learning so much here. Also, some of the smaller expressions are uniquely Korean and a literal translation wouldn’t have the same meaning. For example, I never used '이것 좀 봐' before, I only used '확인해 주세요' 😅. I would not have guessed it right. So, thank you so much for all your effort! I will study this like an assignment. 😁
