In advance of our winter 2025 concerts, Alisa Zaika sits down with Artistic Director Mark Shapiro to discuss her new cantata "Dear Mountains" -- first prize winner of the 2024 Cantori Score Competition!

Alisa Zaika is a composer, conductor and pianist born in 2001 in Kyiv, Ukraine. She graduated from a BMus (honours) course at the Royal College of Music with distinction, in first study composition and second study conducting. Currently she is a RCM Scholar, studying her Master’s course (composition with professors Haris Kittos and Simon Holt and conducting with Prof. Howard Williams). In the UK she is also supported by the Talent Unlimited charity.
In June 2023 Alisa won the silver medal at the 7th Manhattan International Music Competition with her composition “SHPOL: Sounds of Poetry for Piano Solo”. In the same year some of her works were performed in Duisburg (Germany), Hjorted (Sweden), Tallinn (Estonia) and Kyiv (Ukraine). Additionally, her music is featured in the UCLA Library Contemporary Score Collection.
