Baton Rouge based artist who gave this record to my mom. She went to blues clubs a lot in the 80s and 90s. Played on a Russco cue-master with a Denon dl-103.

And it left off the way we found her, still on her own. After all she'd been through, in the end, she still managed to get herself up and out into social situations. I think it would have been a lot sadder if her life seemed worse then how we found her in the beginning of the movie. At least she didn't miss a beat.
😊
I was born just after the war and yes it was like this in the north we were poor but very loved
this was filmed in and around my home town of OLDHAM, there is not much left of the town now its been demolished and renovated over the years. watching the film reminds me of just how much of a dirty grimy old shithole the town was back then.
Yeah 43 minutes in where they get off the bus...That was The Green on Fitton Hill. I was born 2 years before this film but lived in the flats further along from the row of shops in the eighties when I moved up from Liverpool..That pub was my local...The Fitton Arms. & my wife worked in those shops part time after school lol. ATM google earth shows the pub as a rubble of bricks with diggers on it. Scuse the book lol.
I’ve no doubt this is a very good film, but after being POA for my mother and my uncle (both now deceased), while navigating my own life as a working person on my own at the time (now I am alone and retired), I don’t think I can stand to watch this today with flu. Sounds pitiful, lol, but depression can track like a predator, and don’t think I’ll allow it to feel invited today. I do agree that British movies are some of the absolute best❤.
The bleakest of all kitchen sink films but brilliant.
At the beginning of the film the old lady said that she married beneath her, ladies take note , never date or live with unemployed or man with no resources If you do they will bleed you dry I have experienced it myself
Iiiii got ya babe

Olive’s husband from On The Buses 😅
Oh dear, the poor silly old bat… 🙄
Leonard Rossiter and Nanette Newman! - I’m in 😃
Avis Bunnage was another of those great character actresses who never had the level of fame that was due her.
Brilliant actress.
The beautiful music of George Fenton as previously noted reaches it's glorious crescendo in the film's most beautiful scene. This portion of the score would have been at home in many of John Barry's scores including Dances With Wolves and shows again the wide ranging influence of Maestro John Barry's magnificent compositions.
As the film starts , I said to myself : “I bet Nanette Newman is staring in this film“ ( A good career-move , marrying a Director .😮 )
It makes me think I'm 58 I'll be there one day alone 🌹
great film
Heartbreaking how the beast system just machine matches forward regardless... Blessings dear Dame Edith Evans!😇🙏🤳🌈🌞🎉🎭⛲
Sad and scary the loneliness and verbal, and physical abuse. A great raw uncut film.
Good but sad movie
Bryan Forbes - unbelievably neglected director
Heartbreaking yet could 1 of us end up like her
Watched this again after 7 years. What never fails to affect me is the utter cruelty of the woman and her family who poison and rob Mrs Ross and leave her for dead. To paraphrase Dickens, they are the inhabitants of a world in which the name of Christ has never been heard.
My God Bless 😢
Such a sad, sad film. Makes me wonder what my own old age will look like. It’s really a must see for every person.
*Great Film...* Thank's very much. SPrangER.
Astonishing in its honest simplicity. True cinema classic. So glad I found this, so happy that I watched it.
I love the musical swell when she reaches the Birds nest , beautiful! ❤️🖤
I like to search a younger version of these elderly actors. Edith Evan’s was born in 1888, oh my! She was once young and beautiful but like those before her and all of us who follow - we have just a very brief dance in the sun. Mine is long past and now I wait. I wait to walk through that door we all will go.
Oh my dear there's more years left don't fail your promise now 😶🌫️
An awesomely desolate film about being Old......
The young man who is shown near the end is gorgeous.
Such a poignant, sad film, but brilliantly acted and so believable.
Wonderful movie.Great story and Cast.Edith Evan,s performance was So Powerful. This is the first time I've seen Leonard Rossiter,in a serious role.He starred in the Comedy series,"Rising Damp".
Harry Baird was so handsome.rip.
Ronald Frazer is in this. I met him in Kenya in 93 wonderful man, sadly gone now.
People keep in mind the appalling poverty in this film that had been around for a very long, long time. That is why the British Gov. banned the Russian revolt film Potemkin - fearing it would spread in England.
There really was poverty...As shown here in little touches..the elderly woman's cold damp stockings being dried on the heating pipes {her shoes let in the rain} in the library , and the older man's spectacles mended with a safety-pin.
@@Oakleaf700 This was a bleak film in every way - not just the neighborhood and housing but as you state with excellent observation not even moderate items of comfort.
Women with a man like hers would be better off without him.
Edith Evans was outstanding, didn't break character at all, definitely Oscar worthy. A great flick about the affliction of loneliness. As the Beatles recorded, Look at all the lonely people where do they all come from? Tku for post.
Bella Noonan, as played by brilliant actress Mildred Avis Bunnage (1923 to 1990) was a monster. The denatured alcohol she slipped into Mrs. Ross's Port could have rendered blindness or death.
Always the odd nasty predators about ready to take advantage of a vulnerable older person, sadly.
@@Oakleaf700 Scammers.....
So what happened to the pile of cash she found???😊
Beautiful music
Such a sad story. I am partially disabled, and I turn 78 in two weeks. My neighbour checks to see if my curtains are drawn back at 9:00 a.m. every morning. If the curtains aren't open, she checks again at 9:30, and if they aren't open by then, she knocks on my door. It feels good to have someone nearby who checks every day to see if I am up and about. At my age, one can fall over and break something and not be able to call for help. We all should keep our eyes on our neighbours. especially the older ones.
Simply, Great.
I was born in 69 NZ so i no nothing of poverty and war but as an avid Catherine Cookson reader , it looks as sad and gloomy. Like The Nanny , this was hauntingly beautiful 😊
Pretty hard stuff well told with some amazing actors. What a jewel.
The son’s stolen money was put in the drawer. Where did it go while she was in hospital. ???
I saw this when it first came out. Back then the word "hoarding" was not the common term it is today. Also no such idea as assisted living. The illness that had her hospitalized helped get her back together again and with some function. Sadly - on her own she was regressing. Some are going to call me 'big brother' but assisted living can increase the quality and safety of life. It was so disheartening to see her regress especially I am the age she was in the movie (19 when I first saw the film). Also seeing the black and white and the environment - depressing just seeing that. I did find it funny - plenty of stray animals but no insects in the living quarters - esp. before it was cleaned by social services.
