    I'm Irish but have lived on the continent for the last 12 years (mostly Sweden). The thing that drives me mad is the emphasis on houses and not appartments to solve the density problem. Developers happy to knock more woodland to build the identical 100 houses so people can have a garden they don't use. If you want to get young professionals out from their parents feet, allow them to buy small suitable cheaper appartments or else they just end up in a house share which could be used for family otherwise. I've slowly moved up to bigger/nicer appliances and will probably be considering a house next. The solution is not to build houses but to build suitable housing for people at all stages of life. I do agree with the sentiment of this video though. Dense, modern housing for young professionals wanting to get out from their parents easier as well as be suitable for those coming for work who don't need to house a family. Leave the houses to those that need them.

    That image of the unbuilt Galway Bypass just sums up everything that's wrong with planning in Ireland. Over 20 years now since it was first proposed and is, as of yet, being held up by a very vocal minority. With so many quangos to appeal to it can be stalled indefinitely.

    This is amazing content. A lot of candidates who ran and some of which who won in Drogheda, have a vision of making Drogheda a city. I'm from Drogheda and recently bought a house and it's technically in Meath. Drogheda is administered by both Louth and Meath county councils and it seems like Dundalk and Navan come first and Drogheda is an afterthought. We have serious issues with decay and dereliction in the town center, lack of parking, awful traffic, urban sprawl, lack of facilities (especially for young children), job creation, crime and antisocial behaviour, housing and homelessness, keeping the place clean and really being a commuter town to Dublin. I wonder what ideas you have that could improve life for the people of Drogheda. I love this town. Feel like it's got tonnes of potential to be infinitely better though.

    Ireland has applied the “fake it till you make it” strategy with the leprechaun economy. It contributed to the development of infrastructure but it didn’t contribute to the improvement of the quality of lives of the Irish overall, and as soon as the tax haven bait is gone, all those foreign multinational companies will be gone and Ireland will be left like a used condom.

    Ireland simply does not have to try to provide anything or change anything - it is an English speaking country whose people can always emigrate to the Australias, Canadas and New Zealands of this world. Problem solved. Emigration is the permanent answer to all questions in Ireland. Why bother improving anything when you can just leave for sunnier shores elsewhere. Slán go foill.

    So your solution is to cause unemployment and further demand on state services by cutting jobs in these organisations? It’s one thing to cut the “top brass”, but in reality it’s the average worker in these organisations/sectors which will face the axe even though they’re the ones who actually help these orgs run from day to day

    • @polysee
      @polysee 8 днів тому

      It’s an understandable concern, and we addressed it in the video by saying the state can afford to be generous to people that leave. But just because an organisation exists is not sufficient justification for its continued existence. Taxpayers have a right to seek value for money, and there are better things to spend this money on

    There's something a little disheartening about seeing such clear solutions, both to the structural problems in Ireland's political system and also the development visualisations in comparison to what is actually being built around Ireland (sprawling semi-detached housing estates that are 20-30 minutes walk from any local services), because of the low likelihood that things will move this better direction any time soon. As always, so much appreciation for the time you spend making high-quality videos like this about Irish topics.

    I wish you all the best in realising this development. I find the proposal very attractive. It also provides the solution to an intense need for more housing. Naming the streets after trees anchors the necessity for greenery into the urban context. I would invite you to come to Munich, where you can see your visualisation in real life. Visit Neuhausen (my home), Lehel or Haidhausen to view exactly your vision. I have a theory that dwellinghouses and trees must coexist and relate to each other. The correct size for a house is the grown up size of a linden tree. This interaction is in my view one of the major reasons for Munich's immense attractiveness. In many surveys (e.g. Mercer's quality of living), we are well up the list of sought after places to live. You need to get your mayoral devolution model right - in Munich, the state still has too much say in strictly urban affairs (e.g. new tramlines).

    One question. If we move to a decentralized system where there are locally elected mayors , sould there be one mayor per county. If you look at Cork, there could be multiple mayors in a single county for Cork City, Cork County, West Cork etc.

    • @polysee
      @polysee 10 днів тому

      Not really for us to say, and probably no right or wrong answer. In the US have a mayor of small towns and a mayor of New York city. Since Cork has two councils, two mayors could be justified, but there will be the inevitable friction between the councils / mayors

    I may not agree with every thing I this video - but it’s point is very well made - we have an inability to hold our public officials to account. I like the “sunset” idea as now once some thing is funded it then a has a base expectation that it will only grow from there no matter what. We also have a problem with proper local government & how that is funded and what activities it is responsible for.

    The Irish wrestled control and ownership of the land from foreign land owners by boycotting them. So, an organized national rent strike would force REITs to cut their losses and sell. This selling of REIT properties would make housing very affordable, very fast. By forcing house prices down, rents will be forced down too. But if all the tenants in the country do organize and boycott rent payments, they will all be in a position to buy their own property outright within a few years because nobody buys property while prices are falling. In fact, falling house prices terrifies the government more than anything. It is the reason they make sure they never build enough social housing.

The absolute key point you have identified is that to overcome the charge of "parish pump" politics, a better calibre of candidate needs to be attracted through the creation of more autonomous offices with real power and funding. We certainly have the talent but currently we seem to attract the local auctioneers marooned by life and education who lack the perspective, vision and experience to execute any real change that doesn't involve road surfaces. This isn't just Ireland. This is everywhere. Cities are becoming international and huge companies like Google, Meta, international banking, etc move into these cities and pay huge salaries without considering the local economy in that country. Thus, native people can't afford to live and the duality of incomes is insane. It's the same in London, Ireland, US. It's the impact of a global economy and it's not good. Pair that with unprecedented levels of immigration to Europe and the US and it spells trouble.
