don't watch programming videos, mine included
Prepare for enlightenment with wisdom like 'Don't watch my old videos if you want to learn' and 'Just write code, you'll fail, but hey, maybe you'll learn something.' And as we bid adieu to pseudo-intellectual programming musings and dive headfirst into the depths of tech and hardware. I hope all of you will still join me as I take this channel into a different direction.

    I agree that no real learning happens from consuming devtuber think pieces nonstop. But sometimes, it does inspire me to explore in a direction that I otherwise may not have, which has been essential to my growth as a programmer. I would have never gotten into machine learning if it were not for Two Minute Papers back in 2020. And I would not have learned Rust if it were not for ThePrimeagen lol.

    It's good to be kind of plugged in so you have perspective of what's out there. When I was first doing a website hobby project I didn't even know about JavaScript, so I just built a simple Plex clone using Python with Flask and static html with whatever templating was related to Flask lol. I was like 12 to be fair. Outside of that though, UA-cam has absolutely no value and it's all fomo (for me anyway)

  • @AdolfRizzler41
    @AdolfRizzler41 Місяць тому

    In india some big UA-camrs are busy in selling trash courses that is making a lot of new gen developers total idiot what you are saying is absolutely correct and one more thing is developers nowadays just watch a tutorial and try to make a banking system or e-commerce website instead of building small projects like counter app or carasoul or accordian and Code doesn't have to be fancy

    So long as you're making content for yourself :3 I'm new to your videos, but you seem a little down and too focused on what kind of programmer is learning from your content, what they hope to learn. I've been programming for a number of years, and while you're totally accurate that the best and only real way to learn is to just write code, most of computer science and game development is about _how_ you learn too (knowing what techniques to search for etc). People will stumble, they'll search down one path, which leads to another. Content creation is definitely 80% easily giving people the motiviation and the want to learn a really cool thing. It's actually why I've stopped and restarted my channel a number of times - I focused too much on what it is I want to teach, getting caught up in the idea of leaving a legacy, rather than doing really cool things and making the teaching aspect secondary - but still an important part - of the journey in content creation. I'm subscribed, keep just making cool things and inspiring others, and take care of yourself. <3

    hey, first time viewer! nice little video. Just curious, what path did you pick, in the sense, did you go uni and do a cs degree? self taught? - just asking since im a highschool student

    • @globox-dev
      @globox-dev Місяць тому

      Good question! In general would say that I am self taught, as most of my skills can be attributed to work done on my own time. However, I did take some programming classes in high school(very simple stuff, didn't learn much) and I did about a year and some change of a remote game development studies at a vocational school. This did teach me a bit but it was mostly covering stuff I already knew at that point. I then later did some free work as an intern at an indie game studio, during which I got a job at another indie studio. That job kinda fell through after a few months, so I found another job doing mobile app development using game development tools, I stayed there for a year and I am now working at a large mobile game development company doing game dev using Unity. This may have been more info than you were looking for but I hope it is somewhat useful. So a long story short, yes I am self taught...

    thanks for the great tip!! to me I found the best method is: 1- watch the basics 2- do projects and keep trying until the project works the way it should 3-now watch a video similiar to your project and see if something could be improved. in short DO then Watch, rather than Watch then DO, this way you think and search rather than just implementing which won't advance you any furthur

    Actually I don't watch programming videos for learning. I like it, I'm curious what people are doing, what new things are popping up, how they're using it etc. It's often enlightening, but as you point out, it's not really for the sake of learning. In fact, I don't go to UA-cam for learning, I go here for entertainment and inspiration. I find that when I need to learn something in the programming world, it's just faster to search through docs and read by myself. Anyway, I think you should continue to create whatever kind of content you like as long as you like doing it and not worry at all about what the viewer idealistically should be watching based on who you think your viewers are. Just some humble advice. :)

    I think most senior programmers agree that the best/only way to learn to program is to program. The problem is that it takes time and you fail a lot, which makes people feel dumb and think they're wasting their time, when in fact it's the opposite: failing and admitting that you're "dumb" is exactly what will teach you and give you real experiences from which you can grow.

    unity docs is the worst you never find what you want it takes weeks to get tot he right place. unity docs only works if you allrdy know C# programming and know what you are looking for. I need tips on how to actually understand programming, havent found 1 single course that actually teaches. i payed for like 3-4 and i can still not even write a simple movemnetscript from my head without looking up how the hell was this now again.

    I don´t realy agree sire... The Point is, you need to understand C#!!! With a good basic in this, you are able to learn from others, cause you are able to understand what the ppl are doing and why! After that comes the part, where the most than struggle:"They are not able to think abstract and so not able to find solutions for the problems in they projekt!"

  • @fokeyjo

    Totally agree on unity tutorials teaching bad coding habits, for the most part. I've been watching a lot of them to pick up the systems available and try by consensus to get an idea of how they're used. But I also follow some channels of actual good coders who are using good encapsulation/SOLID techniques to get to a better path. But you're right, it then takes longer to actually make the game, and that's something that's skewed in these videos. What is short is making concepts - making a full game takes forever, a large time investment shortcutted only by paying for things that make it quicker and easier, like assets.

    Yeah, time is absolutely the hardest thing to reconcile with me for me atm. I'm currently 32, and I've been trying to learn coding/game development for about 6 years now. I've started and stopped about 10 times already. I work about 9 hours a day. So when I get home, I find it extremely hard to just sit and study. That has been the most frustrating part to me. I end up doing other things most of the time. Working all day long on boring jobs, and then trying to use the little free time I get to study coding or game development is so damn hard.
