It took you three episodes, and three hours to provide a definition for atheism? S T O O P I D ! ! ! --- All atheism is, is a disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of a God or gods due to a lack of definitive, demonstrable proof. It's not a worldview, and it's not a religion, it's just a position of not being convinced a god or any gods exist.

A littler harsh about israel. Both Zionism and israel were founded by Jewish atheists (and opposed by religious ones) as a response to first Christian and then Nazi persecution. Unlike the UK, Israel has no state religion, and half of its Jewish populationn are non-believers, as have been some of its most prominent politicians.

I too have problems with the word Atheism. I do not define myself as a non stamp collector. It would be nonsensical. I am a realist, there is no god, never was.

It's really irritating when people, like Jonathan Miller, admit to being so shy of describing themselves as atheists. It's this strong vein of timidity, this fear of negative reactions, that can be blamed for such a long winded series of programmes. Still, I enjoyed playing episodes 2 and 3 at 1.5 speed.

The question, "does God exist" has always meant to me "is so-and-so conception of God warranted"? I feel we can refute an endless number of conceptions of God, and still be agnostic to all the rest. It's for this reason that I feel forever trapped in agnosticism. It's even worse, given I've had mystical experiences, forever making me wonder if there is a God. I envy other agnostics who can just wonder.

To whittle down the Telos of God to being Santa Claus is a fear-based statement. Fear be an atheist's food, for he fears that God is the Truth! So, let us rightly wax Freudian, and analyze your Santa statement as an admission of what is really going on within you (a veiled confession). You are the one who sees God as Santa, because as a child you fell out with Santa on Christmas Eve, when you found out that Santa was not real. Hence, you carried this mentality, this lack, over to adulthood by an obsessive quest to prove God doesn't exist. After all, the lack of evidence proves it, right? It's a kind of inverted search for God, that presupposes unless there is empirical evidence for something, then that thing can't be proven to exist. You people confuse the brain, with the mind. But, don't we assume other's minds and thoughts (unscientific, common sense assumptions)? We both know that Santa is a symbol for the spirit of giving right? Oh wait, to you God is Santa, degrading Him into an outtake of a bad cartoon. Think about it, the words are coming out of your mouth. And yes, God is Santa, for He tells us to love Him, and our neighbors as well. An atheist's words say absence of evidence is evidence of absence, which is nothing more than circular reasoning. Evidence for Santa does exist, in spite of what we'd reasonably expect to see as certain evidence of his existence truly. It must be painful for theists to watch this, to actually watch somebody have a sensible opinion on something without resorting to wild and baseless claims.

I share the commentator's final comment; It probably is futile to offer a resistance to those of the religious who are so intent on creating insular theocratic societies on Earth - of whatever flavour they have in mind. Nevertheless, it is necessary to do my small bit to resist, to inform and persuade - where possible - those who are willing to consider that their religious frame is a frame and not a factual reality. I would hope that they can be persuaded not to wait eagerly for their eschatology to arrive, and to treat their religion as meaningful without having to be factual. Those who experience their religion as meaningful but not factually true can be reasoned with, and I can happily listen to them expound on why they find it meaningful. (I rather enjoy well written mythic narratives. These stories have had evocative power and been meaningful to a great many people, and like Jung and Campbell I see them as expressing archetypes. They tell us something about being human, and when treated as allegory they have a value, and when treated as fundamental and factual they are dangerous, authoritarian, and cruel.)

I do not like the word and can't stand being called an atheist. For one atheism is a choice to not believe. I don't think of it as choosing to not believe, to me there is nothing to choose, the existence of a god is ludicrous.

I love you madly. Amherst MA is a fine place full of religious people. I believe in religion. I don't believe in God.

People have been rewarded for participating in religion so they believe it. Atheists aren't constantly rewarded by their parents.

Probably my reaction isn't original at all, it IS truly sincere; this documentary is a must see for everyone interested in a richer understanding of the worlds of belief and disbelief. It added several layers to the depth of my atheism, and contributed to my way of thinking.

Belief gives me hope! How can we measure that and with what? It is a priceless feeling.
